As soon as it became safe for Christians to worship in public in the fourth century, a way was marked out. It was changed a few times over the years, and today s usual route was sketched by the Franciscans six hundred years ago, although Anglicans and Byzantines have their own unique detours. Friday is the most favored day, although it is crowded then. Almost everyone begins at the Lion s Gate in the Muslim Quarter, and ends at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It s less than a quarter mile, but it threads its way through crowded markets with souvenir shops and fast food snacks. There are, just as in your parish church, fourteen stations along the way. The exact spots are not known, but what matters is the pilgrim s unique ability to see even an ordinary road in a teeming city as something more than meets the eye. 2

5 Passion Sunday Today we start our inal journey towards that great feast of Easter. But if we are to joyfully celebrate Easter, a word of caution is in order. Don t rush into Easter without stopping at the cross. That s the natural thing to do. Avoid the paingo directly to the good times. I m sure many, if not most of us, have tried that at some time or other in our lives. Perhaps we found our marriage or friendship in trouble. We knew that something had to be done. In fact, we admitted there was something wrong, but then we didn t take the time to look too closely at the pain. It was too hard. So we buried it, hoping we could just reestablish the relationship without going through the hard and necessary work. We pretended everything was now okay. Unfortunately, that didn t work. The relationship was not healed and we continued to suffer. Yes, in fact we suffered even longer than we should have because we were in denial. We wanted the silver bullet, the quick ixbut it didn t come. During this week we must take time to look at the painchrist s pain and our pain. As Jesus followers we are asked to join our pain to his pain. He is there to help us carry our cross, just as someone long ago helped him to carry his cross. Try to clear some space in your schedule this week. If you rush through this week, you are going to miss something very important. Perhaps these days are the days the Lord is going to use to bring some healing to those dark parts of our lives. Attend all the special liturgies that are a part of the parish this week. This can be a graced time if only we allow it to be. Peace Fr. Michael

He is not here, but he has been raised. Luke 24: 56 In the story of the empty tomb, the Church proclaims that Jesus Christ was so filled with the power of life, that death could not hold Him. In bursting forth from the tomb, our Lord manifested His power to empty from life all the evil that sought to capture and confine it. All of the bitterness and regret, the alienation and isolation, the anxiety and worry, and the fear and trepidation that seeks to block our path of life and entrap us, have been rolled away with the resurrection of our Lord. This Easter, I ask all members of our Catholic faith community to make the commitment to grow more deeply in your relationship with Jesus Christ. Participate often in the sacrament of reconciliation, go to Mass, read the Bible on a daily basis, pray always pray and remember that the promise made by Christ thousands of years ago is just as true today as when it was first proclaimed. May the Spirit of the risen Christ bring great joy to your hearts this Easter, and may you abide in that joy for all your days. With every good wish and blessing this bright season, I remain, Most Reverend Jerome E. Listecki Archbishop of Milwaukee
