All sessions are held during Lent on Wednesdays (March 13, 20, 27 and April 3 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Lower School Bldg. In addition to the meeting dates, those wishing to be Confirmed must also attend (with their sponsor) the Confirmation Rehearsal on May 24th and our Confirmation Mass at 5 p.m. on May 26, To register for the Adult Confirmation program you must be at least 21 years of age and have a copy of your baptism certificate and communion date/place on hand (sacrament information is required at the time of registration and a copy of your baptism certificate will be required by the first meeting date.) If you do not have a copy of your baptism certificate, please contact your church of baptism for a copy. St. Francis Xavier Food Drive Hunger Knows No Season The Peace & Justice Ministry thanks you for your food donations. In February 57 cans, 71 dry goods and 15 personal hygiene products were donated. While all non-perishable food items are welcomed, March s needed item is canned tuna. Please place your food donations in the vestibule of the church. 2 St. Francis Xavier From the Desk of Fr. Sebastian, Page Three Dear friends, There is a story about a bird that saw a cat carrying a can of worms. The worm made the bird s mouth water, so he asked the cat how much each worm cost. The cat said that it was very cheap, only a feather per worm. So the bird plucked one feather and gave it to the cat. A little later, he again craved a worm, so he plucked another feather and bought another worm. His cravings were still not satisfied, so he kept on buying worms with his feathers. He never realized that he was losing his feathers, and when he saw the cat about to prey on him, he could not fly away to escape that cat. Temptation is a fact of life. It is everywhere. Like Adam and Eve, and Jesus, we all face temptations. Original sin reminds us that we humans tend to give into temptation. It is a family trait. If Jesus was tempted by Satan, then what about us? Nobody is really strong in the face of temptation. We know that the first humans failed the test. Like flies we are lured by the scent of the sweet aroma. Temptation is tasty because it is always sugar-coated with a promise of pleasure. But we must be careful and vigilant to check where it is leading us, lest we suffer what happened to the bird in our story. Temptation exposes our real selves. We are nowhere near as strong as we think. We easily fall into self-deception as the first parents did. When we recognize our true self, we grow in humility - and that leads to another purpose of temptation: to acknowledge dependence on God. We discover our leanings when we stand before the Lord. Jesus discovered his inner desires while he was alone with God in the desert. The devil invites us to turn towards self. Jesus invites us to turn towards God. We have begun the Holy Season of Lent. It is a special time for us to renew our baptismal promises. If we have drifted away from our commitment to Jesus and his mission, this is the time to refocus. Let us find our temptations and weaknesses, and overcome them. Jesus taught us how to overcome temptations. The Word of God was His weapon against Satan. We should follow his lead when we face temptations. Where humanity fails, Jesus prevails. Let us spend more time in prayer and Scripture reading during Lent. Prayer and the Word of God: they are our weapons against the evil one. May God bless you. GRIEF RECOVERY WORKSHOP April 12-14, 2019 A Beginning Experience workshop will be held at Holy Spirit Retreat Center in Encino for those who ve experienced the loss of a spouse through death or divorce/separation. This weekend helps a person move from the darkness of grief into the light of a new beginning with renewed hope. Beginning Experience is recognized by the Office of Family Life for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Congratulations to our St. Francis Xavier Academic Decathlon Team! Last weekend they participated in the Academic Decathlon for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Out of 100 schools participating, SFX came in 4th place overall!!! In addition, we had numerous team and individual awards: Team Events 4th place in Logic and 10th place in Super Quiz Individual Events 2nd place in Math, 6th place in English, 8th place in Social Studies, 9th place in Religion and 10th place in Current Events.
