The machne whch struck the boy was a Hudson car owned by the Mau Garage & Transportaton Co., and was.drven at the tme by Yeck Man, an experenced Chnese drver. It was loaded wth a dozen or more small Chnese chldren, and was one of the three cars carryng the chldren of a Chnese socety for an excurson to Puunene. The car had just started wth Its load and s sad to have been runnn at between 0 and lr mles an hour when the lttle Clark boy ran out of the drug store and drectly In the way The drver swerved to the rght but I l. n..... H uuv me cnnu wun. ns.. eu lenuer,.. hurlng hm to the street wth such force that hs skull was crushed by the fall. He was pcked up and rush ed to Malulnnl hosptal but ded before reachng there. After the car struck the boy t ran up on the sdewalk where t was fnal ly stopped. The brakes are reported to have been found defectve. Much sympathy has been expressed for the bereaved famly, partcularly for Mrs. Clark who buffered such a shock from wtnessng the tragedy that she has been under a physcans care snce. WORK ON FAIR BUILDING PROGRESSES Work has resumed hls week on the terrtoral buldng at the county far grounds, whch was.suspended durng the tme of the far. It has been decded to have the sde lanas added, as called for In the orgnal plans, al though t had been the Intenton to dspense wth them as a measure of econony. Both the mproved appearance of the bundng as well as utlty seems to justfy the added expense, however, and so t wll be. The old frame buldng on the cast sde of Hgh street, occuped up to a few years ago by the Maul Publshng Co., was torn down tns week and the materal taken to Kh by Frank Sommerfel d who wll use t n the con Istructon of a house. The buldng, Iwhch belonged to the Enos estate. twas sold to Sonynerfeld for $250. Years ago the old structure was occuped by a restaurant. Later t was remodeled for so,as a newspaper offce. The lot on whch the buldng stood has been leased by D. II. Case, who contemplates buldng some knd of a busness structure upon t. WASHINGTON Oc. 2 Both operators vand mners have rejected Secretary "Wlsons proposton to negotate a new wage agreement calculated to avert he threatened strke on Nov. enber. HONOLULU, Oct. 23 Hawaan bonds sold In New York on Tuesday, at Z)2.84, and are now offered at 04,.accordng to a bank cable. Jury Dsqualfed Justce Mll Stops Court Holds Jury Lst Was Not Se lected Accordng To Law Many Cases May Hold Over Tll Next Year Busness In the second crcut court s at a standstl l as a result of the entre tral jury panel beng declared llegal by an opnon of Judge Bur on Wednesday afternoon. In ths opnon the court sustaned a moton to quash ma do by Attorney E. Murphy who rased the contenton that the lst from whch the jury had been drawn had been selected by the jury commssoners wthout heed to the law requrng tha the selecton be made pro rata from the 22 electoral dstrcts of the countv. The queston was rased mmedately upon the open ng of the court sesson Wednesday mornng, and the day was taken up wth hearng testmony n support of the moton. C. D. Lufkn and D. C. Lndsay, the jury commssoners, testfed that they had canvassed the lst of voters of the county by dstrcts and had been unable at frst to And the requred 00 men beleved to be qualfed as jurors Then they had gone over the lsts bo fore them wthout specal reference to where they came from, and selected some more men, they decded after nvestgaton were elegble as jurors. The court held that n ths they had erred, even though the result mght be the same. Court Busness At Standstll The law provdes for the drawng of jures n case the commssoners have faled to furnsh a lst; and also n case the lst becomes exhausted, but whether t apples n ths contngency seems to be doubtful. Although there Is qute a heavy crmnal calendar and a large number of cvl jury suts wat lng to be heard, t seems, to bo the opnon of attorneys that all wll have te stand over tll the next term of court whch wll begn next January. Hosptal Work Delayed Among other thngs that wll bo held up untl next year by the dsqualfcaton of the jury panel, s the startng of condemnaton proceedngs aganst the Smth estate to secure land needed for the proposed exten son of Malulan hosptal. It has been hoped that ttle to the land would have been acqured by that tme so that work could begn very soon after January. At ts meetng on last Tuesday afternoon the chamber of commerce adopted a resoluton callng upon the board of supervsors to pass an ordnance prohbtng the use of the streets n Waluku and Lahana as auto stands for cars n the rent servce; and the same day. tho 2nd crcut court grand jury recommended to the supervsors that the practce be prohbted throughout the county. The matter s to be brought before the Mau automoble assocaton and t Is beleved that a lke resoluton wlf be adopted by that body. At the present tm there are no automoble stands n Mau such as there are n Honolulu, and dozens of rent servce cars habtually make use f the streets of Waluku, Lahana and other towns for ths purpose. On Market street, In Waluku, both sdes of Ihe street aro ordnarly packed almost sold wtl these cars, reducng the traffc area and preventng persons n prvate machnes from drvng along sde tho curb. 2 TWO THE NEWS, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24, 99. Our Contemporares And Pan Won By A Gggle (Hlo Trbune) Feasts of Reason are usually passed up when tley come n competton wt hfare that s easer to take. Runnng concurrently wth hojse racng, baseball, sde shows, dvng boats and such dvertsements the hghbrow end o Xthe bg show gets the. goby It s but natural that such should be the case. It would be askng more of human nature than human nature has to gve to expect anythng else. Lves there a savant wth soul so fusty that he wouldnt desert the forum for a good lvely dog fght? We wot not The soluton appears to le n stagng the heavy skff and the lght stuff so they do not get n each others lght. The Cvc Conventon last week on Mau s a case n pont. As a Cvc Conventon t was a corkng good crcus, and people as a rule do not at tend a crcus wth ntent to conduct themselves wth solemnty. Excellent mners were Prepared and some of them were read to empty benches and some of them dd not get to a readng at all. There was too much dong on the Mdway. Ths s man festly unfar to the Cvc Conventon dea, whch should he encouraged a: a clearng house for nterslan d prob lems To nvte an august body to conference and debate and then crab the act by puttng on a comedy n competton wth t s, to say the least, dscourteous. We do not.mean to crtcse Mau n ths. Maul was as much surprsed and taken aback as the next one at the falure of Mnerva and Pan to work n harmony. Mau folk enjoy a wde reputaton as hosts. Ther hosptalty s proverbal throughout the Terrtory and not a vstor returnng from the fete but would trounce anybody who dared gansay t. Not lack of hosptalty, but the very opulence of t, was what put a jnx on learned dscourse at the Cvc Conventon. If the next conventon s held at Hlo, as proposed, we should proftby the lesson of the one just closed. Whle the wsdom of runnng sports and exhbts concurrently wth a Cvc Conventon s opento queston, there s no logcal objecton to such a practce f the Conventon s gven frst place on the bll. Suffcent tme should be set asde for ts delberatons and the sde show held off untl adjournment of the man feature. The suggeston that papers be prnted and dstrbuted before readng on the floor of the conventon s a good one,and we propose an amendment that readng of the papers then be held unnecessary. The tme saved by reason of pror publcty could be occuped n dscusson f, as we suppose, the object of the symposum s exchange of deas and the makng of resolutons. Whle papers for. such meetngs are almost alawys prepared by men thoroughly famlar wth ther subjects, t does not follow that the authors are traned wrters or fluent publc speakers. Most papers are too lengthy, yet t requres a keen news edtor to cut wthout kllng the; patent. All delegates are not endowed wth a powerful speakng nnetenthvoce and therefore s of what s read never reaches the audence. The subject of the paper may be of great nterest, but ts kernel s so lost n a husk of verbage and faulty enuncaton that few audtors dscover t. When we get the Cvc Conventon here t mght be well to Insure ts success by employng a vaudevlle manager to bll the acts n proper sequence, an edtor to prepare the papers for publcaton and the co operaton of the press n acquantng the delegates and publc wth the sub jects proposed for dscuson. A Cvc Conventon s capable of accomplsh ng a lot of good, but not n compet ton wth dvertsements of a lghter and more temptng nature. More than ths she s puttng n a permanent cla,m for the honor, although she s wllng to let Honolulu have a crack at t occasonally. But nether Maul nor Kaua wll ever have anothfr lookn, f the Hlo delegates to the last con venton have the way. At least, ths s the tenor of ther talk, accordng to the Hlo Trbune. In ts ssue of October 5, ths paper says Hlo lor the next Cvc Conventon, then Honolulu, then, one and the other of the two ctes on alternate years, but Mau and Kaua no more. That was the sentment of the conventon just closed, ncludng the Maul dlegates themselves, sad Frank J. Cody, charman of the Hlo delegaton, yesterday. "In order of precedence, sad Mr. Cody, the next Cvc Conventon should go to Kaua, but Kaua showed no nterest n the conventon. She sent only four delegates to Mau ths year and those four dd not even trouble to present ther credentals, took no part n the proceedngs, and made no effort to press the clams of the Garden Isle. Mau Overcrowded " As for Mau, Waluku was over crowded. They havent Those who were not fortun ate enough to be blleted n a prvate home and I cannot say enough for the hosptalty of the Valley Isle got lttle sleep. Moreover Mau, though mdway between Hlo and Honolulu, s harder to get to than ether of them. As for Kaua, t s frankly n accessble. " The Mau delegates recognze ther dsadvantages. They themselves came to me wth a proposal that here after the conventons be held n Hlo and Honolulu on alternate years. To remove the proposal from any sem hlance of selfsh grab, we left t n the hands of the Honolulu Chamber of Commerce and there t s. I have lttle doubt of the outcome. Least Interestng. "George H. Vcars, another Hlo del egate, who has taken an actve part n cvc conventons snce the frst one was opened n Hlo, sad the Mau conventon was the least nterestng of any thus far held. " In fact, sad Mr. Vcars, they have proved less and less attractve to the crowds each year. Two years ago the nterest was less than the year before. Ths was the poorest of the lot. The attendance was good, there were lots of vstors on Mau, but they were not nterested n the Cvc Conventon. They wanted to see the horses runnng or the ball games. They were not lookng for nformaton so far as I could see. Frst Days Encouragng W. H. Beers, County Attorney of Hawa, sad the frst and second days of the conventon were encouragng, but that after the frst sesson of the second day, the attendance began to fall off untl, on Saturday mornng, there were not enough lsteners to make the readng of papers But I must say the people of Mau have the real Amercan push. They flled n the ground for ther county far, leveled t and bult the Terra l Buldng, the Hortcultural and Machnery Halls n fve weeks and the grounds were well kept and the buldngs not unattractve. I thnk ths a. feat worthy of even a temperate clmate. It rather gves the le to the crtcs who say these Islands are enervatng. "Hlo s desrous of havng the next Cvc Conventon held n ths cty, as was evdenced by the comments made at yesterdays meetng of the Hlo Board of Trade. "The Mau Conventon was not a success n so far as the nterest of the delegates was concerned. At the sesson held on Saturday mornng there were not suffcent delegates present to warrant the readng of some of the papers and these were ordered to he prnted wthout beng read. " The accoustcs at Maul were very bad and t was trng to st andtr to lsten to a lot of numblng or a strng of words and not understand half of them. The superntendent of publc nstructon has announced that hs department s to be placed on a budget bass, wth temzed and segregated accounts showng just where every penny of the money expended goes; and ths nformaton wll be fully set before the people, who meet the blls. There s nothng n Mr. MacCaugheys department that he desres to conceal from the publc; he wants the taxpayers to know what they are gettng for ther money, realzng, no doubt, that ths s the surest way to wn and hold ther confdence. So long as t s wsely spent, too much money cannot be devoted to educaton. Governor McCarthy hmself once ponted out that Hlo boosters got what they went after because they ddnt hestate to ask for what they want and then kept rght after the matter tll they got t. Now Mau needs these roads rnd other thngs badly. Presumably we shall get them n tme, but then agan we mght not unless we look after them. It behooves us to keep awake. We should have a commttee or two charged wth the duty of proddng the authortes gently n the matter and wth stayng wth t tll they get results. W e cant afford to sleep at the swtch. FOR A ROOSEVELT MEMORIAL The "drve" for the Roosevelt Memoral Fund s not a drve at all. It s smply an opportunty for persons who wsh to honor the memory of one of the greatest of Amercans to do so. Whle Mau s asked to contrbute $4000 to the fund, there s to be no coercon n the matter. The chamber of commerce commttee, between now and the frst of November, wll receve such contrbutons as may thus be made. If you beleve that Roosevelts memory should be preserved n the way proposed, and care to help, you are asked to make your donaton to some member of the commttee n your neghborhood. Most of the stores, banks and plantaton offces are recevng donatons. The amount you should gve s up to you. (lve jusv what you feel you should and can afford, or dont gve at all unless you are n sympathy wth the movement. You wll receve a neat souvenr certfcate as recept from the commttee member who takes your money. THE NEWS, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24, 99. OPEN FORUM I IN DEFENSE OF IRELAND Edtor Mau News, Dear Sr: Amercans n these Islands who sympathze wth Ireland n Her struggle to fulfll one of the objects for whch we entered the war, namely: "The freedom of small natons," may well gnore the nsultng remarks of newspapers, I prefer to conceal the dentty of these malgner s lest I may confer unmerted dgnty on them by assocatng them wth such a theme. Attacks of ths descrpton only suggest the comparson of the dogs that bay the moon. Around Ireland they have wrapped clouds of falsehood and posoned gas, that are quckly beng dspersed whle she stll sals on, leavng the clouds tralng In rags and leavng the effluvum of those posoned gases to suffocate the perpetrators, who stand convcted before the world, of the henous charge of consprng to rob Ireland not alone of her purse, "whch s trash," but, also of her good name and thereby her best frend, Amerca. Holdng the Cvc Conventon and the County Far at the same tme s not a sttcce?.. We may just as well admt t, fur the delegates trom the other slands are a unt n ths concluson. In rehrtng to ther home bodes on the Cvc Conventon, Illo delegates made no bones about callng the Mau assembly the least nterestng of any of the seven yet held. Honolulu takes much the same atttude. Nothng has yet been heard from Kauas representaton, whch was conspcuous by ts absence from practcally all of the sessons. The falure was due to nothng else than the Far. Local people who are deeply nterested n the subjects dscussed at the conventon found themselves ted up wth Far dutes tha could not be postponed or delegated to others. Vstng delegates could not be blamed ether for not wantng to mss the multtudnous attractons of the bg show. But ther conspracy from the strt The Far swamped the conventon. There was nothng the matter wth was doomed to falure. Wth the hgh the conventon program t was, n fact, a partcularly strong one. It percentage of Irsh n the Amercan was smply a case of too much else dong. We shall not make the Army and Navy t would have been same mstake agan. brother slayng brother. Apart from But now llo, at least, s proposng to cut both Mau and Kaua such vald reasons, Ireland was n the from future conventon, and to have the meetngs alternate between war from the start and the Irsh are Hlo and Honolulu. Mau can agree to ths plan on but a sngle ground ; no qutters. The alleged German that s lazness and lack of publc sprt. plot was the offsprng of dseased and Why does Hlo want the conventon every other year? Because she s alve and Js determned to keep n the van of progress. She has ambtons that any healthy, progressve communty should have. Hut what has she that Mau lacks n any of these thngs? Nothng. There are physcal dffcultes of access that may make the elmnaton of Kaua advsable. And there may be other reasons besdes. Hut Mau refuses to have any of these reasons appled to her. The future means as much to Mau as t does to Hawa maybe more and t s up to us to keep our place n the processon. vcous mnds, totaly gnorant of the true character of the Irsh people. These German plot artsts forgot that the; were dealng wth a people that cannot be judged by ordnary standards; they fgured that everybody would beleve them when they sad the Irsh were or prodev l, so long as Great Brtan was nvolved. Surely the stuaton was an embarassng paradox; but when we thnk along these lnes we forget that (hat proud lttle country values prncple above the materal thngs of ths earth, for whch she has been martyred so long. It s a pty that the acton of a few woodenheaded, clumsy, cecret dplomats, or poltcans, or whatever else they are, should brng uch dsgrace on Great Brtan; for the glory or dsgrace of the few re flects on the whole country. The plot Is a worthy companon for "The Lonr don Tmes plot," whch sought to brand Darnell and Redmond and the Irsh Party as murderers and assassns a couple of decades ago; so the Idea s a bt stale. The plot was hatched and launched at the tme we were n a lfe and death struggle for the freedom of the world, and at the moment best calculated to mpress the world wth Irelands perfdy and brand her orever n our eyes as the most callous type of hypocrte and Mgrate. But, thank heaven! "The bestla d scheme o mce and men gang aft a sley", and nstead of damnng the Irsh for ever to the tender mercy of Great Brtan, the German Plot was the greatest boost for the Snn (Shnn) Feners; because the nsult t contaned fermented the ndgnaton of the Irsh people, whose pentufound vent at the ballot boxes all over the country. Last December, when the hot lava of dstrust and contempt boled over and flowed, as f from Mauna Loa, n a hot stream oblteratng the Brtsh connecton for ever, n ts course to the sea of sympathy, that surrounds the Irsh struggle, t had ncreased the temperature too much for the exstence of the coldblooded sea serpent who thought out such a dabolcal plot." Though hundreds were arrested and jaled for nearly a year, not one man wbb put on tral for the alleged plot. The lava flow from the Irsh Mauna Loa has crystalzed on the hllsde of Irsh lfe, has plunged over the precpce of despar, that It was fgured on would leave Ireland n the lurch, f the Plot were successful. The Irsh Republc has soldfed n the econo mc lfe of the country. Lke the healthy sugar cane t sprouted wth ncreasng vgor through the Brtsh mulchng paper of coercon, whch serves only to keep down the weeds. No the Irsh Republc Is not (founded on hate for the Brtsh; t Is founded on natuural rght and Justce. The date of Its recognton by Brtan should be the happest day n the exstence of the Brtsh Empre, because then, n truth, would commence the real unon, between Great Brtan, and Ireland. Great Brtan s alve wth the Irsh." In Scotland alone before 30,00 conscrpton 0 was ever mentoned Irsh boys donned the Brtsh unforms (whch they hated) and ded on the Marne! The Redmonds recruted n Ireland (before conscrpton was spoken of n England) one hundred and seventy thousand, and went over the top wth them at a tme one who doesnt understand the Irsh would have wagered hs last nckel that f St. Patrck hmself came he could not get one recrut for the Brt sh. The Irsh are a gfted people, and the world has been robbed of ther talents because the talents have never been allowed to floursh or develop n Natve sol. I have no desre to make unfavorable or unfrendly comparsons between Ireland and Amerca, but accordng to fgures compled by a Brtsh offcer (Maloney), Amerca to be equal to Irelands quota n the war should have fve mllon, seven hundred thousand (5,700,000) dead, not to menton the wounded, and yet, accordng to some crtcs, Ireland has done nothng. How can the world ever get free f such people are allowed to poson the channels of nformaton. School chldren should be protected from such stuff, f ther parents desre them to learn the truth about every, thng. There s no stnt to the prase that Brtsh statesmen gve to Ireland for her share n the war. Anyway we are satsfed that the ntellgence of Amerca Is well aware of the facts. We have the word of Lord Wmbourn, the Vceroy n Ire land, even after the rebellon, that the Snn Feners were not progerm "Lookng around the gloomy aspect" says Sr Edward Grey n the House of Commons, "there "s one consolaton; one brght spot on the horzon, Ireland s wth us n ths war." Who blackened Greys brght spot? We are tred of lstenng to a lot of claptra p about the Irsh not agreeng among themselves. Why they are as unted today under Presdent De Valer a as they were under Bran Borou when he routed the Dansh marauders that cursed the Western Islands for centures. They were unted under OConnell and Parnell. Lo! and mark well, the falure s on the Brtsh sde; they are too narrow to trust the Irsh. Unable to agree amongst themselves the Brtsh played poltcs at the very tme the Irsh factons agreed to a truce durng the war. The Brtsh have faled to grasp the physologcal moment and lost for ever the one and only golden opportunty that. has ever been presented by crcumstance to fuse the two great races Into one. The Brtsh were too to weakknee d follow that great Irshman and Imperalst, John Redmond, across the chasm that the war had brdged to the lofty plane of magnanmty where all could fraternze and np the war n the bud. "And Abraham Rose Up Early n the Mornng and Saddled Hs Ass"oy wrt. FORSALE Z The Fne Kentucky Jack MONITOR Just landed from the Steamer Manoa, Oct. 3, 9 DESCRIPTION Montor s a brown jack about 5 hands hgh and wll wegh, when n good condton about 000 lbs. He s perfectly sound but a lttle thn now, probably from not havng receved any extra treatment on the steamer, but wll soon round out as he eats lke a "house afre," whch I consder a good sgn n ether a man or anmal. Now, n presentng MONITOR as a Kentucky Jack I dont know but what I may be lyng agan but wll leave my frends to judge of ths. If so I Wll put up no defense but stand convcted. I suppose that accordng to the strct nterpretaton of the letter of the law, that a Kentucky Jack means one bred, born and rased n Kentucky whch s Just what le snt. Hs sre and dam were, whch I consder an advantage as he was rased n the mld clmate of Calforna whch s so smlar to our own here n Hawa. Ths anmal was bred by an old Jack Man n Calforna who knows more about Jacks n one mnute than any of us would n sx months. In descrbng hm to me he Bad, "I bred ths. Jack for my own use, never expectng to sell hm. I traned hm n. from colt hood and he grew up and ran wth the mlkng cows, loose horses, mares and colts. I have never.bred hm to a mare n the usual way of usng a pt for the mare but allowed hm to do hs work entrely by hmself. He wll cover the bggest and tallest 7 hand mare that you can brng around". In runnng wth the flock he doesnt molest mares unless they are n heat and then he does hs work n great shape. I have only about a dozan mares of my own whch s all I have ever bred to hm and have never yet turned a mare out wth hm that dd not prove n foal. I now have about thrty youngsters from hm whch wth a dozen or so I have sold s all he had ever produced. Therefore he has never been overbre Ths Jack possesses one trat that I never knew n a Jack before and that s for an anmal of ths knd that would lead behnd a vehcle.they wll generally lead alrght f you are on the ground but can seldom be nduced to lead lke a horse. They wll usually pull back lnt ths fellow s just lke a horse n ths way and you cant start up too quck for hm to lghten hs halter. If the puce gets too strong he wll fly nto a run and keep up just lke a lvely horse." As to the profts n mule breedng. A lttle experence came under my notce recently whch throws a lttle lght on the subject. I was on a ranch n our vcnty lately Where they were breakng a nce young mule about 2 years old. I asked the manager whether or not he would care to Bell the anmal. Hs reply was, "Well, what do you thnk he s worth?" I sad that I thought about $50. He sad that he dd not know how much would buy hm but that $250 cash would not take the mule ol the place. Ths mule was sred by a common natve Jack and out of a common natve mare, whch shows what good one ought to brng." In offerng ths Jack for sale t s not wthout a reason. I should lke ever so much to k"ecp hm but am afrad that fnances wll hardly permt t, therefor I shall probably dspose hm to the hghest bdder nsde of 30 days. That s f anyone comes along who apprecates such an anmal. He s worth a lot of money but f I can not get t I may have to take less. For further partculars call on or address C. B. Mau Far Had Best Lvestock Show Yet (Contnued from Pago One.) shown (Whte Facon). From all grounds our Hereford exhbt was, as far as qualty Is concerned, far ahead of the Calforna State Far just held. The value alone of the Herefords shown nt Kahulul amounted to f or more. As far as breedng and blood lnes are concerned, Maul has In all ts branches of lvestock as wellbrestock as you tan fnd n Amerca. The only outsde stock shown were sx heads of Holsteln Frlesan Dary cattle from tho Kamelameha Schools; the Holsteln Frlesan bull, Grand Champon at the last Terrtoral Far, shown by the Wnlalae Ranch; and a Holsteln Frlesan cow and a Guernsey bull shown by the College of Hawa. Tho College of Hawa cow took the Grand Champonshp Tor tho breed, also the frst n the Mlkng Contest. The bull was the only Guernsey shown and was a fne specmen. Classfcaton of breeds shown Horses: Thoroughbred, Standardbred, Percheron, French Coach, grades polo pones, draft teams, draft mules, and Hawaanbre d saddle mules and pones. Beef Cattle: AberdeenAngus, Herefords, and crossbre d steers. Dary Cattle: Holsteln Frlesan, Jerseys, nnd Guernso; s. Hogs: Berkshlrcs, Duroc Jerseys, Poland Chnas, Tamworths, and a wld hog from Kcanae. Goats: There were ten on exhbton, Kng of Kahoolawe took the champonshp. Unfortunately there had been consderable delay n gettng the judgng started, owng to the fact that our judge from the coast was unable to get here on tme. We were fortunate, however, n beng able to secure local judges.who dd splendd work and are to bo congratulated. They had ther troubles too. At tmes there was consderable delay n gettng the stock n the judgng rng and a few of the stock n the dary class unfortunately were not properly halter broken. Tho judges and the classes judged Lght horses: W. F. Dllngham, of Honolulu and James Spaldng of Kaua. ( Draft horses: Dr. V. A. Norgaard, Senator C. A. Rco of Kaua and Senator Robert Hnd of Hawa. Beef cattle, hogs and goats: Dr. V. A. Norgaard, Senator Robert Hnd and J. A. Ternan of Mau. Dary cattle: F. H. Locey of Mau, Senator Robert Hnd, of Hawa and James Lndsay of Mau. Beef steers: Mr. A. McPhee of Mau, Senator Robert Hnd of Hawa and Dr. J. C. Ftzgerald of Mau. Tho Carcass contest was won by the Grove Ranchs three year old AberdeenAngu s steer, "Jm". Ths steer won by a very close margn n valuaton In dollars and cents fron the Haleakala Ranch Od.s three year old Hereford steer, the dfference beng only 6 cents. Mr. Rces 6 months old Hereford steer was a close thrd, losng out by 0 n valuaton. Undoubtedly these steer three carcasses were the best ever slaughtered on Maul. The publc was not able to. prove ths for tself as the storage plant where the carcasses were beng chlled was not n workng order. There was undoubtedly room for mprovements n all branches of the exhbts. The bg tlng next year wll be our permanent quarters for all stock as well as the ne,w racng stables. The tme was short and t proved to the publc what Mau could do when It had to. Everybody kokuae d whch made our Far a success. Tho results of the Boys and Grls Pg Club Contest has been publshed. Every hog made good gans. Although ths s the frst contest of ths lnd, t proved to be very satsfactory. Every boy and grl that I meet talk about hs or her hog, and f they Mountan Party Fnds Many Goats In Crate Thousands of goats are to be seen n Hnleaknla crater ft present, accordng to R. N. They camped In tho crater nnd spent the nghts n tho "Bubble." The temperature at nght was chlly pretty close to the frost pont, t Is reported. The party secured all the goats they wanted and a few pheasants. The brds, however, aro not very plentful.
