5 t4 7V4 v T r FOR THE A School Do yon remember how proud you were the other day when vour dog Towser pcked up the even-n- g paper from the ftont-porc- h and carred t n hs mouth nto the house? Or when Tabby the fatnlv pussv cat stood on her hnd legs and pushed open the door leadng nto the next room? "My arent" they ntellgent!" you exclamed Well over n Versalles France there s a school for the study of anmal ntellgence Whle anmals are the pupls so to speak thev do not study t s the other way round The scentsts watch them and even gve them tests that are calculated to show evdencejpf ntellgence t s truly a most u terestng place despte ttle of "nsttute of Zoologcal Psychology;" and you or any other boy or grl wonld be amazed at the wonderful thngs these strange "pupls" do You have seen traned mce and traned rats many tmes no doubt But here s a story of a rat and another of a mouse n the school nether of whch had been traned at all they smply thought out for themselves the thngs they dd Mss Mouse was confned jn a glass jar covered wth a canvas nettng She was gven peces of straw very much on the order of the "straws" through whch you drnk your soda water to play wth But Mouse ddnt play wth them nstead she pushed four of them nto poston so that they reached to the top of the jar Then up them she clmbed though her strange ladder was perlously shakv at tmes gnawed her way through the nettng and all but escaped! Now dont you thnk that was rather goodevdence of ntellgence on the part of Mss Mouse n fgurng out such a scheme? Mr Rat had been accustomed to recevng hs lunch at a certan tme every day So magne hs surprse one brght mornng when he smelltd somethng good to eat n hs cage but not n ts accustomed place After a whle however he located t n a tn cup whch had been suspended to the wall near the celng and from the cup ran a stout cord down the wall to the floor Mr Rat presently had an dea He scurred over to the cord took t n hs sharp teeth and pulled t Ths joggled the cup so that some of the lunch fell out Ths he speedly gobbled up Then back to the cord he went agan But after a whle no more lunch would CHLDREN for Anmals fall out because he could not jar the cup suffcently So what dd smart Mr Rat do but gnaw the cord n two; the cup fell to the floor and he enjoyed the fruts of hs labor Then there s a dugong or sea-cofrom the Malay Archpelago He s a great dver People throw cons nto hs tank and n a jffy he has recovered them from the bottom But that s not all Just outsde hs pool s an old woman who sells buns and cakes Ths brght young dugong opens the gate of the ron gate surroundng hs tank by turnng the knob wth hs mouth Then straght toward the old lady he flops She tosses hm a bun or a pece of cake and he tosses her the con he- has recovered from the bottom of hs pool! There s a remarkable chmpanzee too who bult hmself a swng one fne mornng and measured and changed the length of the ropes a number of tmes pefoe he got them to sut Also he s partcularly fond of securng a box of safety matches and strkng them one at a tme untl they are all gone But lsten to the story of a red bear from Madagascar who refuses to drnk anythng except out of a bottle More than that he s very partcular that the bottle be clean Often when flled wth water that contans a sedment he wll hold the bottle up to the lght and straghtway rnse and wash t n runnng water untl t s thoroughly clean; then he wll fll t and drnk And just thnk of a stag playng golf! Oh no of course he doesnt use clubs and have a "caddy" followng hm about But he does select a pne cone push t nto place on a lttle hllock n the ground and then stand hack and suddenly strke t wth hs nose or kck t wth hs front foot sendng t flyng through the ar Fe follows t up straghway and ether sets t up agan or brngs t back to the orgnal nlldck These are just a few of the anmals thev have there and just a few of the wonderful thngs they are dong that tend to show anmals have ntellgence Wouldnt you lke to see them "n school" and watch them "at ther lessons?" My wouldnt t be nterestng!
