3 THE MAUI NEWS SATURDAY, JULY 0, 909 o o Travel To Mau Steady Secretary Wood Sends Out Encouragng Letter That the Promoton Commttor s meetng wth excellent success n ts endenvor to promote travel to Mnu and Kaua s evtleneed ly the communcaton, "part f a letter addressed to the Promoton Commttee by Secretary II P Wood: "It s very gratfyng to bo able to state that our efforts to turn travel to Mau are meetng wth much encouragement 90!) wll undoubtedly show a largely ncreased numl)cr of vstors to Haleakala and Iao Valley over prevous years Ths result has lxc made possble by the Mau people themselves who have mported automobles, mproved ther hotels, thus enablng us to say that transportaton on the Twn Island s cheap and hotel accommodaton good, Of these facts, the traveler must le assured and now that Kaua s offerng a splendd automoble servce coverng all parts of the Island at reasonable rates and wth the as, surance,that the traveler wll fnd good hotel accommodaton at The Deverll Hotel, Hanale, also at The Wame Farvow Hotel, Lhue, and at a, the three vantage ponts on the Island From ths on, I that travel to thy Garden Island wll rapdly ncrease Kaua should have a large modem tourst hotel at Hanale whch s certanly one of the most beautful bathng leaohe n the world, and now that the tde of travel has at last turned to Hawa, such a place, f well advertsed and r properly conducted, would, I feel assured, prove a payng nvestment Durng the summer season a hotel wth accommodatons for ffty or more guests could le kept constantly flled wth our own people Use of Posonous Gas to Destroy Insects It s now more than twenty years snce the frst attempts were made to destroy cale nsects on frut trees by meaf"s of a posonous gas The gas used s known as hydrocyanc acd gas, and t s extremely posonous to human bengs and domestc anmals as well as to nsects Ths method has gradually ncreased n popularty untl t has largely dsplaced all others n tho orange and lemon orchards of Calforna In order to use the gas effectve ly the tree a covered wth a tent A small quantty of sulphurc acd s dssolved n a emal quantty of water n a jar whch s placed on the ground n tho tent The proper amount of potassum cyan d s weghed out, carred nto the tent by the operator and dropped nto the jar, after whch he gets out quckly, closng the tent after hm The gas forms very quckly, rses, and flls the tent, destroyng all or, most of the scale nsects wthn an hour The tent s then taken down and placed over another tree In the use of ths gas there have been a varety of methods employ ed, much varaton n the amount of chemcals used, and much df ference n the results secured In order to determne the most sats factory methods and proportons of chemcals, the U S Department of Agrculture sent out an expert fumgator to the Pacfc coast to conduct a seres of experments wth hydrocyanc acd gas The frst report on ths work has just been, publshed n a bulletn en ttled Fumgaton Investgatons n Calforna By an extensve seres of experments wth trees of dfferent szes wth dfferent pro portons f cvand, sulphurc acd and water, and fumgaton at df ferent seasons, the expermenter has determned the rcost econom Landlords Prayer Attenton Called lo Prayer n Lturgy of Edward nestoilation TO PRAYER BOOK In the House of Commons on the st ult, John Bnn asked the Prme Mnster "whether h9 attenton had been drected to a prayer n the lturgy of Edward VI (Parker Socety Vol XIX page 458) dealng wth the equtable dsposton of land wthn the country; and whether he would consder the advsablty of ssung the letters of Busness to Convocaton, recommendng the restoraton of ths supplcaton to the revsed edton of the Hook" The followng s the remarkable and beautful payer, to whch the queston refers It was probably composed by Archbshop Cranmer The earth s Thne O Lord, and all that s contaned theren; not wthstandng Thou hast gven the possesson thereof unto the chldren of men, to pass over the tme of ther short plgrmaje n ths vale of msery; We heartly pray bee to send Thy Holy Sprt nto the learts of them that possess the grounds, pastures, and dwellng places of the earth, that they, re memberng themselves to be Thy tenants, may not rack and stretch out the rents of ther houses and lands, nor yet take unreasonable fnes and ncomes after the manner of covetous worldlngs, but so let them out to others that the nhabtants thereof may both be able to pay the rents, and also honestly to lve, to noursh ther famles, and to releve the poor Gve them grace also to consder that they are but strangers and plgrms n ths world, haung here no dwellng place, but seekng one to come; that they, rememberng the short contnuance of ther lfe, be content wth that that s suff cent, and not jon house to house nor couple land t land, to the mpovershment of others, hut so be have themselves n lettng out ther tenements, Hands and pastures that after ths lfe they may be receved nto everlastng dwellng places; through Jesus Chrst our Lord Amen The Prme Mnster contented hmself by thankng the questoner for drawng attenton to the sub ject Monster Eel Caught at Kala Honolulu, July the largest eel ever known U have been caught on the Kala fats off Wa kk, was brought to land th mornng by John Kam, an expert and veteran Hawaan fsherman It took over half an hour play to brntc the bg fsh wthn reach of tho anglers ready spear Qute a number of relable wt nesses observed the feat of capture, among them Frank Godfrey Isn who has a resdence on the Wakk beach The fsh measured n length three feet and sx nches and had a grtl of 2 Y nches, weghng nenarly 20 pounds It was a monster ant holds the record, probably, at least untl the BeevesAyre s hu s bean from Star cal and effectve method of dealng wth the purple scale;
