3 TK MAU XFAVvS SATURDAY SKTTKMRKR 5, 94 3 Certan of Wnnng But Lost Game Walukus Get Surprse of Season When Chnese Put One Over Mau May Play n Honolulu on Regatta Day. The game of baseball played last Sunday at the Waluku Ball Park proved as much a surprse for the nvncble Walukus as t dd to the Chnese team. t was at frst thought that the Chnese would forfet ther game to the Walukus, there beng but eght regular men n unform, but Correa was allowed to play for them, and he proved a good addton. The Waluku team had just exactly nne men, Bal, Soares and Cummngs beng absent. The Waluku team feelng that they had the game n ther pockets on account of the long lead began to take thngs easy. Maxwell was changed from center to ptch, and Meyer went to thrd. The Chnese found Maxwell for fve runs n one nnng, and the score board looked very dfferent. The game was rather unnterestng, but surprsed those present, for the reason that the Chnese won out n a score of 0 to 9. Ths gves the Puuneuc team a one game lead, and, should they wn tomorrows game from the Walukus, wll gve them the vctory for the second seres, whch would mean a playoff between the Walukus and Puuneues for the champonshp of the season. Should the Walukus wn out, then they wll be ted for honors of the second seres wth the Puunenes. For ths reason, the game on Sunday wll probably be a hard fought one, and the fans should turn out en masse to see the struggle. A communcaton has been ad dressed to E. C. Peters, presdent of the Oahu League, to arrange, f possble, for a seres of two or three games durng the Regatta holdays between an all-ma- u team and teams of the Honolulu league. Last years event proved a fnancal sue cess to the Oahu league people, and t s possble that Mau wll agan be asked to come down, more especally f excurson rates pre val. Mau Wns Fast Basket Ball Game Thursday evenngs basket ball game between the Mau and Y. M. C A. team at the Alexander House Gymnasum was undoubted ly the fastest basket ball ever seen on Mau. n the frst half Hono lulu ran up the score to 9 aganst Maus 5. But n the second half Andersen, Chllngworth and Mar calluo played tremendously hard and successfully for Mau, wth hc result that the total score amounted to 23 to 9 n favor of Mau. The most sensatonal throw of the evenng was by lenrch, who put two-thrda basket s across the floor. Poverty Ball A Success Successful from a fnancal standpont, am most hghly enjoyable, was the Poverty dance gven last Saturday nght at the PuuncneClub House. The recepts, whch amounted to over $200, wll be devoted to a fund for a nurses cottage forkula santarum. A great many ludcrous costutn were n evdence, and everybody had a great deal of fun on account of the nformalty of the occason. Most of the republcan canddates for the legslature from Mau made a plgrmage to lana dstrct the frst of the week, and held a number of well attended meetngs. ncdentally, accordng to reports, some of the would-b- e representatves were made to do a lot of squrmng and sde steppng by the drect challenge whch the lana people put to them. Tle THC mportant duty of the voters of Mau s to help the Terr tory to Ret proper representaton n Washngton for the 64th Congress. The only way to do ths s to make an X wth a Mack lead pencl after the name of Chas. A. Rce (Kale,ak) on the offcal ballot. Rce has made good as a worker, as a man of ntatve, and one who can delver the goods. Kuho, has not made good, le has had every chance, and he has faled. Hs place s n Washngton at ths moment, hut he has not been there for months. Hawas only representatve s the delegates secretan a boy just out of college. s t any wonder Hawa has been losng out n Natonal affars? And yet Kuho tells the voters there s no reason for hs beng n Washngton f you beleve Hawa doesnt need a lve delegate, who wll work, then vote for Kuho. f you want these slands to have a voce n Washngton that wll be heard, and an ear that wll hear everythng of nterest to our Terrtory, vote for Rce. PUBLCTY N PUBLC AFFARS L,. K. Pnkham was presdent of the Board of Health, WHKN seven years ago, he used to have very postve notons as to just how much the publc was enttled to know about the workngs of hs department, as well as how and when ths nformaton should be gven. Apparently Mr. Pnkham has carred ths same dea of paternalsm nto the Governors offce. The recent changes n the county board of supervsors and n the local terrtoral tax dvson, s an example n pont. There s no room to doubt that when the publc was permtted to get wnd of the matter, the changes were as good as made. Ths s not sayng anythng aganst the men apponted, but t s a characterstc of the Amercan people to want to know what ther publc servants are dong. f the Governor were wse, he would strve to take the publc nto hs confdence more than he seems nclned to do. n the present nstance, the people of Lahana certanly had a rght to know what was pendng and to present ther case that a Lahana man should be apponted to the vacancy. Kveu f ther contenton was ultmately overruled there would not be the feelng that TheGover-no- r "had put one over on them." Commentng upon the plan whch s beng agtated on Mau of havng an offce and a pad representatve n Honolulu to look after Star-Bullet- Maus tourst busness, the n says edtorall MAU AND PROMOTON WORK Maus plan to have a representatve of that sland statoned n Honolulu to meet toursts and urge them to take the Valley sle trps, s a plan that can be worked out n harmony wth the general promoton campagn. t would not be a bad dea f all of the slands had ther representatves n Honolulu, wth headquarters wth the Hawa Promoton Commttee and all workng n conjuncton wth the Commttee. n ths way the maxmum of advertsng for the ndvdual sland attractons could besecured as well as the maxmum of general boostng. t the work of the Promoton Commttee expands as t should, f t s gven adequate fnancal support, there wll be plenty to do for a staff of four or fve hustlers. ly combnng ther offces at one headquarters, expense wll be saved. lve-wr- The thng to be guarded aganst s the unorganzed dvson of promoton work. The gun that fres scatterng shot doesnt carry the "punch" that lve promoton work for Hawa must have. The people of Mau feel that ther sland needs more ndvdual boostng and they are prepared to pay for t. That same sprt wll wde-awak- e convnce all promotonsts that concentrated and cooperatng boostng s the only knd that wll be of permanent beneft to all Hawa. THE LOCAL CENSORSHP OULD Hawaan waters become the seat of any actve hostl- - tes between war vessels of the varous warrng natons, these slands mght as well be wthout wreless communcaton, n so far as the transmsson of war news s concerned. Twce already has the Mau News had ts messages censored by the authortes n Honolulu. The last nstance was on Tuesday when the German cruser Nurnberg arrved n Honolulu, strpped for acton, and seekng to replensh her coal supply. Not a lne concernng ths nterestng event was permtted to be transmtted by wreless from Honolulu, and t was not untl the arrval of the mal the followng day, that the news reached Mau. t would seem that Uncle Sam s almost leanng backwards n hs effort to stand straght n the matter of neutralty. THE COST OF BAD ROADS. s tryng to help the Kuaha homesteader to get EVERYBODY The Chamljer of Commerce has taken up the matter wth energy, and wll try to persuade the legslature to do for the Kuaha people what should have been done lefore the homesteads ojened make some passable thoroughfares. t s fgured that durng the past sx weeks, the pneapple growers of Mau have lost, through bad roads alone, between $30,000 and $50,000. n other words the losses on ths one seasons crop have been equal to the cost of buldng from 6 to 0 mles of macadam road. SPNELESS CANDDATES. to all reports, some of the canddates n lana have ACCORDNG a lamentable spectacle of themselves n tryng to carry water on both shoulders. 5 Raymond And! Hennng Get Appontment Cut and Dred Program Carred Out. And Objectons Apparently Had No Weght, Good Work Expect-- ed of New Men. Dr. James. Raymond s now n nenlxt of the board of supervsors of the County of Mau. Wllam Hennng, who resgned as supervsor last week, began hs new dutes as deputy assessor for the dstrct of Makawao, on Tuesday, ember st. Edgar Morton, erst-wh- le deputy assessor for Makawao, s now smply a prvate ctzen, by vrtue of the acceptance of hs requested resgnaton. These several changes were fore cast by the News last week, n con nccton wth the announcement of Supervsor lennngs resgnaton. Dr. Kymonu a appontment was made by Governor Pnkham on Saturday last, and he qualfed and fled hs bond on Monday of the week. le wll attend hs frst re gular meetng of the Board on next Wednesday. Dr. Raymond wll hold offce by vrtue of ha appontment untl the next county electons, whch take place n May; after whch he or a successor must be regu larly elected. As stated last week, there was opposton to Raymonds appontment, n the dstrct of Laha- - na, on the grounds that the vacancy should be flled by a Lalana man. There was also some opposton else where on the grounds that a republcan should have been named to fll the unexpred term of a regularly elected republcan, bo far as can be learned, however, the matter had vrtually been decded upon before Mau people knew that t was con templated. and protests had no effect n changng the decson. For the most part, however, ex pressons of opnon are now gener ally favorable to the appontment of Dr. Raymond, and regardless of party, the belef s expressed that the county wll proft by hs well known aggressve energy durng the next nne months. HOW HENNNG COT NEW JOB At request of the admnstraton, through Actng Treasurer Henry Hapa, Assessor J.. Kunewa call ed for Mortons resgnaton, and upon recevng t, apponted Mr Hennng to the place. Terrtoral Treasurer Conklng, who has been away onla bond-selln- g msson for several months, and who s hmself to be succeeded by Col. C. J. McCarthy on October st, was presumably not consulted n the matter. Good vomls for tle Kunhn homesteads, am money for promoton Work, wore He two matters tlat occuped llc entre attenton of the trustees of the Mau Chamber of Commerce at an hour and a half Hrelng held on Thursday afternoon. n both matters there was lttle dfference of opnon on the man ssues. Tho Board went on record as favorng the contrbuton of SCO per month to the promoton commttee, and also adopted a strong resoluton favorng a drect appropraton of Hot le.s than 850,000 from the next legslature for road work n the homestead dstrct. A commttee was apponted consstng of W.O.Aken, Wn. Walsh,. W. lce, and l V. Baldwn to meet the county supervsors next week, wth a vew to securng, f possble some temporary ad n fxng up the roads n the Kuaha-Hak- u secton, to make condtons n lttle less deplorable than they are at present. The same commttee wll also take up the matter of securng f possble the authorzaton of the Governor for the floatng of the St?!), 000 bonds authorzed by a prevous legslature, for puttngthrough the Kuaha-lldehak- u secton of Unbelt road, a part of whch wll help the homesteads. Presdent Baldwn spoke strongly on the need of roads n the homesteads, jnd Senator enhallow, and Senator enhallow, and prospectve Senator, George Cooke, expressed the ntenton of makng adetcrmn-e- d fght for the appropraton needed, from the next legslature. A commttee composed of Messrs. obnson, Walsh, and Wadsworth was apponted to take up wth the supervsors the matter of helpng the promoton commttee. The chamber adopted a resoluton endorsng Ah Sn, as wharfnger for Khe. Farmers Walk mportant to Attend Road Meetng Good roads, s to be the slogan of the luaha homesteaders for the comng campagn. Morever t s to bo kept rngng after the electon rght up to the tme the legslature takes some acton to releve the ntolerable stuaton whch has confronted the dstrct durng the past year. A drect appropraton of not less than 850,000 s to be asked of the law makers., At a meetng of the settlers last Sunday ths plan of acton was pretty well napped out. Although called on very short noteo the attendance was large and ncluded resdents of all Makawao dstrct, ndcatng that the mprovement of homestead roads s of much nterest to tho whole dstrct, and not alone to tho homesteaders. Owng to the fact that the roads were all but mpassable, those who attended the meetng, whch was held n the Kuaha school, readed there ether on horseback or on foot, any knd of vehcle trallc beng practcally out of queston. Harold V. Jtce and J P. oseorans, of Paa, were among those who attended and who took a lve part n tho dscusson. Tho orgnal plan was to havo ar. tem nserted n tho proclamaton for the county plebscte onneountv bond ssue, and a petton was put n crculaton to ths end. Later, howover, ths phn proved mpract-oabl- e, and t was decded to concentrate on demandng help from the next Legslature. Every canddate for oleeton from Mau s tobogven a chance to put hmself planly on record on ths roy matter, and as far as tho homestead secton of Mau t concerned, tho ssue wll hnge almot entrely on good roads. Photographs have been taken to gve some dea of the almost unbelevable condton of the roads durng the past few months, and data s beng compled, based on the lasses to the pneapple growers to prove that the cost of macadamzng the roads n queston wll scarce equal the savng on one years crop. PLAN TO.UNLST CVC CONVENTON The homesteaders are makng preparatons to entertan the delegates to the bg Cvc Conventon, on October tb, and beleve that they can make frends of ths lve bunch, through ths meetng, who wll be of materal assstance when t comes to demandng help from the (forrtorv, next February. ll lao Valley Felds Plan Enthusastc Sportsman Wll Take Steps To Secure Fry For Experment.
