Ths contest wll be a debate between two speakers representng State College two representng Trnty College. The four wranglers wll go upon the platform wth more than a month s practce, a close nterestng battle of wts s antcpated. The proposton for dscusson s one that should be of nterest to every wde-awake Amercan ctzen. t s: Resolved, That the proposed amendment to the Federal Consttuton authorzng the regulaton of chld labor should be adopted. Ths amendment was debated durng the recent sesson of the North Carolna State Legslature, after much exctng argument, was refused ratfcaton by the Tar Heel legslators. The queston s by no means dead, however, for t s to be consdered by forty-odd state legslatures durng ther sessons ths wnter. The debate Tuesday nght s to be,unque n that t wll be conducted n accordance wth the so-called Oxford rules. Ths procedure means that each of the two colleges wll have one man speakng n favor of the proposal one aganst t. Trnty wll be represented by Julan P. Boyd, for the affrmatve, W. S. Blakeney, Jr., for the negatve. Statewll send onto the platform Ralph J. Peeler, for the affrmatve, Henry H. Rogers, for the negatve. Each speaker wll be allowed ffteen mnutes for the presentaton of hs argument. Ths formal presentaton wll be followed by an open-forum dscusson of the subject, n whch members of the audence wll be nvted to take part. They may put to the speakers on the platform, ether ndvdually, as teams, or collectvely, any questons whch they see ft to ask. t s hoped that there wll be a rapd-fre dscusson on the part of the audence that wll practcally amount to a hecklng of the debaters, for t s beleved that ths type of open, free debate col- A thng worthy of note was the manner wll wtness loquy s the fnest knd of practce for the n whch begnnng, the n full. student-body of backed young speakers.. up the team_ They fought Wth the Q.- ---uc.c-----m.«-.mm the ggantc program of physcal caton WhCh eduhas been planned by the On the evenng before ther contest old team all season, never gvng up wth Trnty the State College speakers wll journey to Chapel Hll for a ter how the score was never stoppng cheerng no mat- FALL TERM, gong smlar open-forum debate wth representatves of the Unversty of North State \Vns Opener FNAL EXAMNATON SCHEDULE l Carolna. ALTERATONS MADE N THE PONT SYSTEM The pont system should consder not only progress n scholarshp, but fdelty to duty, a student's stng n college should be determned largely by these two factors. The class grades reflect progress n scholarshp, attendance records refect to some extent one's fdelty to duty. A Student who s undoubtedly sck unable to attend to hs dutes s not lackng n fdelty to class dutes. Therefore hs attendance record, n a case of undoubted sckness, should not detract from hs stng as a student. Students, therefore, should be excused for non-attendance under the followng crcumstances: 1. When confned to the hosptal a certfcate s receved from Dr. Campbell, statng that the student was unable to attend class dutes. 2. When n quarantne prevented from attendng class dutes.. 3. The Faculty Councl wll consder specal cases, such as students who are called out of the cty for medcal treatment, or called home because of serous llness or death n the famly. RESUME OF THE 1924 FOOTBALL SEASON Thrteen Men of the Squad Receve Stars Fve Monograms The 1924 football season found the Wolfpack confronted wth an entrely new corps of coaches wth an entrely new system. The coaches ddn t promse us a wnnng team for ths year but dd promse one for next year. The season wasn t successful from the stpont of games won lost but was successful n that we now have nstalled one of the best systems of f00tball n the Unted States. Have you notced how popular buttons are wth the Freshmen? The Rush Season s over n tme to allow the rush element of the school.to rush ther books before fnals. A few Senors as well as the Freshmen receved a few thrlls on December 1.. Bds were sent out for Ph Kappa Ph. The old sayng that a good begnnng makes a bad endng may well be appled to our past football season. But football s now a thng of the past. We have only the future to look forward to. Questons such as these are be comng numerous on the campus: When do exams start? Wll we have to be back on New Years? When are you gettng off gong home? What can gve my grl for Chrstmas? As football fades nto the west as the settng sun, basketball takes ts place. Ths s the frst tme that the State College basketball team has had a decent place to practce. Ths year State College has a rght to expect somethng of her basketball team. State College s newest muscal organzaton s ndeed an addton to our campus. We have reference to the Glee Club. The frst appearance of the club n publc was last Wednesday at the College Assembly. Every one present enjoyed ther program as ndcated by the applause the club receved. Records show an ncrease n the number of njures receved from men fallng n the dtches whch are so numerous about our campus. People who are not well acquanted wth the varous dtches, those whose eyes' are the least bt poor, or any one who mght be under the nfluence of somethng other than water, are hereby warned about comng on the campus Wthout a gude. THE SCRUB No one on the campus receves more kcks, bumps, bruses gets less for t than does the football scrubs. The majorty of students, not only at State College but everywhere, consder a scrub merely a scrub, nothng more, nothng less. f one of these students were to be asked who the scrubs are they probably would say, Oh, those men out for the football team who are not good enough to make the team. n one sense of the word they do not make the team, but, n a bgger sense of the word they are the ones who do make the team. Only eleven men can be on the feld at one tme fghtng for the school, stll f there are not eleven or more men on the sde lnes a team s gong to be pretty weak. Reserve men are just as essental n football as they are n war. A scrub deserves every bt of prase, honor respect that s gven hm, then a great deal more added to t. t wouldn t be far wrong to say that a scrub should have as much credt as the man who made the team, because t s the scrub who made hm, after all. t doesn t take near the stck-to tness to be a varsty man as t does a scrub. Thnk of all the many hours the scrub goes out, thnk of the tmes he gets knocked down, thnk of the many bruses he gets, then thnk of the amount of credt that you gve hm. Does he stll reman n your mnd only a scrub? f you have respect honor for the man who makes the team fghts for you your college, then have just as much respect honor for the men who made those men good enough to represent OUR COLLEGE. HATS OFF TO THE SCRUB! We bd good-bye to the dscusson on the Pont System wth a sgh of relef. The whole matter should be cleared up n the mnds of all the students now. The Faculty Councl has answered the queston appearng some tme ago n the Techncan s ths rght? We are glad to know they beleve a man s not beng unfathful to hs duty when he s sck cannot attend classes. t s fne that the whole matter could be settled wth such satsfactdn to both Faculty Councl Student-body. t seems as though some people do not apprecate the nformaton t s beleved that the admns- obtaned from the recent queston~ nares sent out to some of the students at varous colleges n the state. traton of ths college sts ready at all tmes to do that thng whch s most benefcal to the college the students. t s also beleved (wth good reasons for the belef) that the admnstraton desres to know everythng that the students thnk s not n accordance wth the makng of State College one of the fnest of ts knd n the South. The only way for the admnstraton to fnd these thngs out s for some student to tell them n some way or other. The columns of the Techncan affords a fne way to do ths. Do not get n a room full of men fnd fault wth every lttle thng never make your complants known. f you have grounds for your complant then let every one know about them n a manly way, n order that the root of the trouble dscord may be gotten to remeded. How much better t was to let the admnstraton know that there were some thngs about the excuses of absences we thought were not exactly far than t would have been to keep the whole matter to ourselves keep on kckng the system the faculty for not changng t, possbly never have gotten a change. As t s there s peace n the famly agan every one s happy (or should be at least). Are you the barber that gave me my last har cut?" No, ve only been workng here a year. Ex. Teacher: "James, you are a. pretty sharp lad." James: ought to be, papa uses hs razor strap on me two or three tmes a week." Ex. The bloom of youth was on her cheeks There n the moonlght s glow, But how the bloom.got on hs lps You're not supposed to know. Let Your Lght So Shne There s no doubt about the value of the crtcsms made n the Techncan about bad thngs, but are there not several good thngs that t should comment upon prase? For example: Suppose you heard a student from Wake Forest say that our college song was the best college song n the state. Then a Trnty boy would confrm hs statement add: t has the pep. sn t that gratfyng? And t actually happened. magne yourself beng over at Carolna dscussng the proposton of gettng somethng to eat over there, you broke too a Carolna boy would say that State showed a more cordal welcome more hosptalty to boys from other colleges than any college he ever vsted. Another would mmedately tell about gong n our mess-hall four or fve State boys offerng hm a seat at supper before he could get halfway through the mess-hall. That really happened. Another statement by a Wake Forest boy sounded good also. He was here late at nght wanted to reman here for the game. Hs partners found a place to sleep wth frends. He was left after all the beds had been flled he ddn t know any State College boys, but he remembered seeng a bed n a room the bed ddn't have any clothes on t. He sad he would go get that bed. Hs frends asked hm dd he know the boys who were n possesson of t. He sad No, but you may count on me gettng a place to sleep f there s an extra bed on ths campus. He slept n that very bed n the room wth strangers; then came back the next mornng tellng about hs host brngng hm some breakfast from the mess hall. The above related ncdents are not toots of our own horn but are toots of other boys' horn" for us. f we would commence to toot our own horn" we would compare the order n our pcture show wth that of some of our frends at other nsttutons. We could also make a contrast between salutaton on ths campus those on the other campuses. Of course, we should be crtczed for our numerous wrong-dongs t does us good. But what we want to do s to keep our hgh record n hosptalty courtesy, at the same tme mprove on other honorable dutes. W. M. GNN. A Man s Honor Golf s a gentleman s game should be played as such, s a statement prnted on many golf score cards n the country. At a country club of whch was one tme a member, on whose cards was prnted the statement quoted above, saw one of the best players of the club n a tght match pck hs bal out of the rough carefully gve hmself a good le. He had drven through a clump of bushes hs opponent was on the other sde of the clump. watched that match to a concluson to see what happened. The man who was playng a gentleman s game crookedly won. have known that player for over ten years now. can't conceve of any thng more dffcultthan to make myself beleve that D. W. (those are the ntals of hs frst last names) would not cheat, le or even steal under certan crcumstances. had known hm for two years before saw hm pull ths trck aganst a club member a close frend. could never make hm even look the same to me afterward. can't help but halfway forgve a fellow for crookng some one who beleves he s a crook contnually treats hm as f he had to be watched. "Hundreds of others. am confdent, have the same feelng. That s why student government based on student honor s better n every way than s a system of faculty polcng. To place a man on hs honor n athletcs, n a college examnaton, or n any other performance does two chef thngs: Frst, t gets a more honest performance nne tmes out of ten than any detectve system could get. Second. t bulds up the self-respect of the performer, whch after all s the very essence 'of character. The man beleves n hmself because he has put hmself to the test knows what knd of stuff he s made of. No court n the world could convnce hm that he wasn t honest. He knows. can't forgve a fellow, don t beleve he can forgve hmself, f he ll stop thnk, who crooks some one that trusts hm. Nothng that has happened on State College campus snce became a member of the college communty has dscouraged dsheartened me so much as the re- OUR WEEKLY MSUNDERSTANDNG By Ztrrr Mxox (Apologes to Stanley, Ralegh Tmes) You say ths pettng has gone to excess? - No! My frst feelng was that the publshng of the fact n the Techncan would arouse the same feelng n the student-body that the dscovery of these facts aroused n me. Thnkng about t snce has convnced me that we don t want to know who has taken these 1,200 peces of cy a great number of apples wthout payng for them. have therefore not felt mpelled to wrte' ths artcle because want these boys caught punshed. have felt mpelled to wrte t because honestly beleve that there aren't ten fellows n State College who wll take another pece of cy or an apple wthout payng for t when they stop to thnk what such a thng means to themselves the college. The thought that the wrter has n mnd at ths tme s just an ordnary one, that all the larger colleges are puttng across, that of havng a college prnt shop. One of the colleges that the wrter has n mnd s Oho State Unversty. Ths shop could.be connected wth the Journalsm department, the art of prntng could be taught to many students who would learn the fundamental prncples of runnng commercal prntng plants newspapers. Who could ask for a better tranng than ths: Journalsm, theory of the prnt shop, practcal experence n hlng the lnotypes, presses, paper cutters, the varous machnes that make up the shop? Why can't State College have such a combnaton as the above? The Techncan, Agrculturst ndustry, odd jobs could be prnted by the students, whch would save the students the college much money. t would pay for tself nsde of two years, f run on a busness-lke bass. The tme has come when a college as large as State College s should have a prntng plant on ts campus advertse ts name far wdethen back up the advertsng. Ths experment, whch was started last summer, s to extend over a perod of about three years, as the end of whch tme some valuable nformaton s hoped to be obtaned. The experment s nterestng to the Engneerng students of ths nsttuton because of the unque method beng used. A large Whte motor truck has been furnshed by the Hghway Department. The engne was removed n ts place was nstalled an electrc motor. The regular truck body was replaced by a specal bult body. On ths was mounted an electrc generator drven by a gasolne engne. The generator supples current for the motor, whch n turn propels the truck. By ths method the amount of power requred to drve the truck over varous types of road surfaces s easly determned a much more accu rate concluson reached than f the truck were propelled by a gasolne engne. 'l ractve resstance, whch s the draw-bar pull at the tre, has been found to be about eghteen pounds for each ton of weght of the truck when runnng on hard-surfaced roads. Ths resstance s about the same on both paved good drt roads.
