2 yj'.'t.!s:'b' l AMERICAN LEGION SECTION Amercanzaton Talk No. 3 WATCH YOUR STEP In ft terrtory, such as ths, where there s both a mxture and a blend ng of many races and creeds on the j roster of ctzens, where the dutle'to ol ctzenshp are mposed, and the prvleges of ctzenshp are enjovt d by men and women of practcal al racal prettagos, t should be the corstant endeavor of thos ctzens to be worthy of these dutes a..c'. prvleges. In other words, they should endeavor to be good Amercans by embodyng n ther Jalv lfe and behavor those qualt es ;hat are characterstcally Amercan.nd that ave tnu'rent In the best bred stock of Amercan hstory.?he ' 0 de poneer stock. When ;h' ntted Ktules was a of : s. c.rert and plans., certan hardy ac! "n.ls of the N'od c stock of Kurope came to North Amerca. These ncluded among lbs others the early Englsh, Hugenot and some of the Dutch settlor.,, l. comng to North Amerca the ' cut themselves off from all accustomed sources of protecton and foo.l sup ply, and placed themselves '..o her lfe depended upon ther owu efforts wthout assstance from an: stronger group of people. Ther motve n dong ths was ther to have ndvdual and group freedom of acton wthn rr;; vlatlons and laws of ther own From the recorded accomplshments of these frst groups of poneers, and of, the poneers' who developed all of the broad expanse of the Unted States two tradtonal and fundamental qualtes of good Amercan ctzenshp have arsen: self relance, and the ablty to possess ndvdual lberty of thot and acton wthn the law. Let the ctzen of alen parentage and other ctzens as well realze that here In Hawa lfe s easy and condtons are safe as compared to those of the poneer days and that they are enjoyng ther advantages n great measure due to the work of these poneers. Let them put ths queston to themselves: "I wsl to be a good ctzen. Have he energy and, self relance under tcbe easy condtons to put thru my own enterprse, wth my own efforts alone of necessary, wthout Eoa.'chng for outsde assstance.''' From the condtons demandng self relance and self suffcency that the poneers had to undergo has developed among the Amercan people an admraton for these Qualtes that shows tself nowadays n ther concepton of "sportsmanshp." Let us llustrate ths. Should the skll of a team of Indvduals to wn n any sport be asssted by outsde help or an unfortunate, accdent to the opponnl the entre self suffcency and mert of the team n wnnng s gone, for a vctory now means that that vctory has not been acheved thru mert alone, but thru ablty plus factors lessenng the opponent's chance of wnnng. T.s takes away most of the satsfacton of wnnng to a vctor who has the true deal of sportsmanshp, and be s sorry frst that he has to play at all, and second that hs opponent had to lose under such a handcap. Now consder what ths means. Should a team have some players temporarly dsabled, or should an ndvdual be temporarly njured before a match, t s good sportsmanshp to accede to a request for a postponement f possble. It Is good sportsmanshp to cheer one's own players and poor sportsmanshp to place one's opponents under a handcap and jeerng at them, and applaudng ther errors. It s the poorest of sportsmanshp and absolutely not to play the game accordng to the rules and laws, whether t be an athletc contest, fshng, huntng, busness or an ndoor sport. Now cones the most general of the qualfcatons of a good Amercan ctzen. It s the correct performance of hs dutes as a ctzen, and embrace hs duty to hs country, hs duty to hs neghbors, und hs duty to hs famly. One's duty to one's famly s the The underlyng prncple gudng one's duty to one's neghbors s the r Golden Rule of "Do unto others as you would they should do unfo you." In practce t means to guard your actons and speech so that nether can harmfully affect anyone In your communty or elsewhere, to wth your neghbors for the common welfare, and to obey the law. Such' practces ns reckless drvng, turnng stock out where lfe and property may be Injured, cruelly to anmals, gossp, etc., all come under ths category locally One's duty to one's country on the part of all ctzens s to take an ntellgent part n ts government, and, should t be n danger to gladly do one's part n ts defense, even though t should mean the ultmate sacrfce. It means votrg at every electon, votng for the best man after a careful study of hs qualfcatons for offce, and supportng ths man after electon. The Amercan Legon, publc servants or offcers, and ctzens of Amercan parentage, have a poston and nfluence In ths communty that s potentally great. It Is to these people that the new Amercan ctzen must look for gudance and example, and an acton on the part of any of these may be coped and mtated by ctzens of foregn parentage and tranng as beng the deal of good Amercansm. It s much harder to correct a mstaken deal than to nstll the rght one. So,. good Amercans all WATCH YOUR STEP! A. J. HORNER. Indanapols, Ind., May 5. Efforts to speed the constructon of hosptals where young Amercan servce men, nsane from ther war experences, may be treated, are beng drected from natonal headquarters of the Amercan Legon here. C. J. Harrs, head of the Legon's servce dvson, reports an alarmng condton do to the lack of proper facltes for quarterng and treatng the demented veterans. More than 9,000 young men, who afflctons range from harmless mental dsorders and hgh nervous tenson to ravng nsanty, are confned n Veterans' bureau hosptals alone, whle at leaht 3000 more are held n contract nsttutons, state and county nsane asylums, Jals and prvate hosptals. In a cty near Indanapols, Mr. Harrs reports, a servce man, shellshocke d n mltary servce, became slghtly mentally unbalanced and began "actng queer," accordng to hs famly. The case was reported to the Veterans' Bureau, but nstead of al lowng the bureau tme enough to fnd a place for the patent, the parents took hm to an nsane asylum for observaton. Whle beng observed however, a document legally commtn g the man to the nsane asy lum was read to hm. The commtment for nsanty so preyed upon shellshocketbe young man, Mr, Harrs declares, that shortly he be came a ravng manac, confned In a padded cell. The Langley bll, recently passed provdes for the constructon of one neuropsychc hosptal n each of the Veterans' Buearu's 4 dstrcts. Traned personnel for treatment of the demented veterans s sadly lack ng however, and the natonal rehabltaton commttee of the Legon, makng a study of the problem, ha3 recommended that a tranng center be establshed wthout delay. The Legon has noted an ncrease of one per cent each month n the number of nsane veterans, natonal headquarters reports. Indanapols, Ind., May 5. Colonel Charles It. Folles, drector of the Veterans' Bureau, now s the one man n the Unted States' drectly responsble for the proper care of sck and wounded veterans of the world war, accordng to Na ' tonal Commander Hanford MacNder of the Amercan Legon. Passage of the Langley bll appropratng $7,000,000 to complete buldng of permanent hospals under Mr. Forbes' drecton and the announcement that Publc Servce hosptals n whch the servce men are patents wll be transferred to the control of Mr. Forbes, centralzes completely responsblty for care of the war's dsabled n the hands of one man. "Ths means thut the Legon's three va legslatve fght s won, but t also means that the country Is just three years too late n ado easest and most nstnctve of all quately c arng for ts dsabled," Mr. the oblgatons that a man tukes AIucNUU r declared. THE GARDEN ISLAND, TUESDAY, MAY 23, 922 another for hosptal and medcal care and another for vocatonal tranng. Responsblty was dvded n three ways. "The Amercan Legon drew up a plan to remedy ths condton and obtaned the backng of the country. Hut by ths tme 50,000 pendng clams for compensaton had been amassed and 300,000 unanswered letters. Departments passed cases back and forth between whle men ded n want. "Fnally now the machne la n order. One man, the head of the Vetteran Bureau, controls nsurance, compensaton, vocatonal tranng and hosptal and medcal care. Furthermore, the power to make decsons and awards has now been allotted to dstrcts so that there s personal contact wth clamants." OUR JOKEFES A Modest Man Scene Lades' cloak room on Ka ua. But, oh boy, you don't know what you mss' ed f you dd net take the trouble to Journey to Eleele Sunday and vatch the Scots and Makey tangle u.. The nl'..:t game was mld n comparson. Sxteen errors, ten mlscues by the wluncrs and sx by the losers, ndcate that somethng must hve been radcally wrong somewhere, aut ask anyone who saw the game and the answer wll be that t was the most nctng game they have 3en n many moons. Imagne a game In whch the wnners overcame a three run lead and went nto tu lead by one run, only to have the opposton agan te t up wth runs to spare. Then, when everythng lookel rosy tor McBryde wth the sc at 6 to 4 n ther favor, and a Makee man had been lad away lu what was supposed to be the frst half ', of the nnth nnng, tao Makees tarted after Ohama and flled the bags, scorng three runs In se of a sudden swtch In moundsmen. Tl ly comng n from rght feld to check the rally. Ths was enough to wn, but they earned two more n the nnth to feel safer. The fnal score was 9 to 6, but the score doesn't tell the story at all. K. Muranaka, who ptched for Kl lauea two years ago, started oft for the "Makees, but sx errors' n fve nnngs spoled hs record and he retred n the ffth nnng wth two down, n favor of Teves. The latter allowed two hts In 4 3 nnngs, hut whch resulted n two runs. Ohama for McBryde had the Ma kees for fve nnngs, but weakened n the latter stages, allowng hts In every nng. Tlly however, dd no better, as under the rules, he was responsble for the loss of the game. Hee, the frst to face hm, scored the wnnng run. The story of the game by nnngs was as follows: The Makees went out one, two and three n the frst. For McBryde, after Tank had skyrocketed to Kng and Ako was klled by ptcher to frst. Fernandes pulled a Snodgrass and Spaldng landed on thrd. Tlly sngled, scorng Spaldng. Do booted G. Watase's grounder and Per rera sngled, scorng Tlly. Perrera stole second and Watase Scored on Soong's bad throw to thrd. Perrera tled to come n on the same play and was out, Muranaka to Soong. The second nnng was a blank for both teams. The Kapaa boys scored ther frst run n the thrd. Muranaka was safe on shortstop's error. Dol sngled and Yoshlda was safe when Ako erred. Hee fanned; but Tsunehro walked, forcng n a run. Two other forceout s ended ths Innng. McBryde could not connect n ther half. The ffth nnng brought Joy to the Makees supporters. Do sngled. After Yoshda had ded va the ar lne to Tlly, He beat out a bunt and a double steal was pulled off. Tsunehro fanned the ozone, but Soong doubled, scorng Do and Hee. Soong stole second and scored when Ako agan erred on Fernandez' grounder. Rodrgues ended by whf flng. The Joy of the Makees was short lved, however, as the Scots came rght back and put themselves gan n front by two runs. E. Watase sngled and Ohama sacrfced, Watase reachng thrd thru the forgettulnes s of Rodrgues. Tank sngled and scored Watase. Ako grounded to ptcher, who threw wld to second n an attempt to force out Tank, both runners advancng. Spaldng fanned. Wth two strkes and two balls on Tlly, Muranka was yanked a;d Teves went n. The frst ball he ptched was ht for a trple by Tlly, scorng Tank and Ako. Watase fanned. There was nothng dong n the sxth, tt e Makees gettng one hh and commttng another mscue. Do got on thru second's error and Yoshda' beat out a bunt for a sngle, fllng the bags wth only one down. Notes on Game MakeeMcBryd e Tlly was the battng star of the day, gettng two trples and a sn gle, all healthy wallops. As a clean up htter for McBryde, he certanly lved up to hs reputaton Incdentally, both relef ptchers were damaged consderably by the frst batter they faced, Teves yeld Ing a trple whch scored two runs, and Tlly a double whch) talled lke number. Perfect control was a feature of the Makee defense, not a free tcket beng doled out ether by Teves or Muranaka. The score board attendant must have been out late the nght before, probably to the Kapaa far. He added an extra column ot cphers to the board and everyone except the offcal scorers thought the game was over n the eghth. Teves work on Sunday aganst McBryde and the prevous Sunday aganst Makawel Indcates that he s Makee's best bet on the mound ths year, unless Cummngs can show some of the old stuff that made hm nvncble last year. Sally Watase made a dvng catch of Rodrgues' short fly n the fourth. It was a nfty catch and he deserv ed all the applause he receved for t. The game last 2 hours and 50 mnutes', but could have been much slorter f the McBrydes knew more about baseball rules. The buldng tself s an archtectural masterpece. Smple n lnes, wonderfully well proportoned, arranged so that every foot of space may be utlzed to good advantage, the structure stands not Only as a thng of beauty n a well selected locaton amdst the trees, but as an nstrument of servce to the communty. If ths buldng dues not adequately serve as a memoral to loved oms who have gone before, then nothng, bult by the hands of man, (an. r.l A CLOUDS UATIIEUISV, The great world war, that promsed so much for the peace of the world, seems to have faled n ts objectve. None of the natons are satsfed, and today war clouds are gatherng n every quarter of the globe. Cvl war exsts n Chna; there s trouble n Afrca, n Inda, n Persa, n Turkey, Greece, Armena, and n other countres. France s on the pont of a fght wth Gernan y and perhaps Russa; Poland s an armed camp, and a number of wars are v.. progress, and peace seems to be far off. In fact, the dogs of war are stranng at ther leashes and may break loose any moment. In fact the world seems to be on the edge of an abyss, and Europe may before many months be ablaze wth war, and unless nternatonal dscord can be readjusted on the lnes of harmony and justce the smoke of battle and the thunder of the bg guns mngled wth the cres of men n the agones of death, wll be what today seems an almost unavodable condton. The Genoa conference was poorly managed. Mstakes were made n nvtng certan elements to partcpate. Kussa comes to the conference cocked and prmed for trouble. She has nothng to loose and everythng to gan. Her problem was and s a world problem; buther managers are trcky, exactng and greedy. A new allance, wth the possblty of other menacng combnatons has been made, and that, too, wthout the consent of the alles, the league of natons or any other authorty except that of the parles conceded, s a dark and threatenng cloud, Gor'nany and Kussa have combned fur nclul.der est, and the combnaton may yet nclude lulgara, Turkey and possbly some ether nut on. Wth ths combnaton loomng threaten ngly at the Genoa conference, and the par tes to the combnaton defyng the alles, there seems to be no hope of a satsfactory peace. In fact, the combnaton s a menace that seems to forcast nothng short of another great war, and that very soon. It may be averted, but nce dplomatc engneerng wll b; necessary to turn the tde. The alles mw see ther mstake n nvtng Kussa to partcpate n (he Genoa conference, and they see also that they have made serous mstakes n hagglng over poltcal ssues whle ther enemes have been strength enng ther postons untl they have vrtually become the dctators. Whatever may be the result of the present European tangle, the present status s alarmng, and well nformed men are fearful lest the dscord pass beyond control. Amerca may not agan be called upon to defend her rghts upon the hgh seas, but a European war may make t necessary for us to be prepared to defend ourselves from any encroachments that the conflctng partes mght see ft to make upon us. Maybe the reason Mssour stands at the head n rasng mules s because t's lle only safe place to stand. But the harm they do has always been n the mnds of many people, more or less conjectural, and no very decded step las been taken to wpe out objectonable pctures. Hut last week a case came up n the crcut court at Lhue that very planly shows the effect of these pctures. A thrteenyearol d school boy was brought nto court charged wth stealng?:!(). The boy broke down and confessed hs crme. When the judge asked hm why be dd t, he sad that he was tryng to act "lke the moves." He had got the dea and nspraton form a seral "The (reat (amble." that he has been watchng for some tme. In ths case the judge s a student of human nature. Moved by the boy's straghtforward confesson, he gave hm another chance und a very mpressve lecture. Had he not done so the boy would have been sentenced to a penal nsttuton and a lfe of crme started. The effect of these pctures can no longer be doubted. They are harmful n the extreme. They are shown very graphcally and ndelbly fxed n the mnds of the chldren and the adults wth chldren's mnds wbo watch them. The dea, the method of carryng out the dea and the ease of "gettng away" wth the crme are all mpressed upon the mnd. All that s needed s the opportunty and a few more crmnals are made. Ths s a good tme, and ths s a good reason, call t excuse f you lke, to start an effectve campagn aganst ths type of moves. There are commttees already here. Let them get busy and do movecensurn somethng. They may be sure that they wll have the wholehearted backng of every good ctzen on the sland. THAT IS OUT. The wse canddate s the one who comes out on a da t form of more than, one sprng bonnet a season. At the rate Germany and Kussa are prntng money the best thng a fellow could own over there s a paper mll. One sure way for a woman to keep her husband home s to ask hm to take her some place. We see where a New York Couple were marred n an arplane. That's not new. Lots of marred couples here have ther ups and downs. Kado wll probably never be popular wth the poltcans. There are no wres to be pulled. If there s a man on Kaua who thnks he has too much money our advce s to try runnng a newspaper for a whle. We can say ths for the, men who have short chns.; they are the most graceful tobacco chewers. Investments Should be Closely Watched DKLAYS n dealng wth clents Investments are concerned s often the cause of Iokh. That s why the motto of our slocks und bonds department has been always '"promptness." We beleve the rapd growth and remarkable success of ths t s duo n large measure to our system of keepng clents n close touch wth the market. We use the wreless when necessary. Lhue, Kaua, May 3, I22. Edtor, Garden Island: Your recent edtoral, on the Amercan Logon's actvtes concernng the remodelng of the armory, wa'' read wth a mxture of satsfacton and apprehenson. The Legon Is, of course, very apprecatve of your knd remarks and thanks you for them. Thra mpresson was gven, however, that t e work s to be done at the cx p;nse of tho Legon. It s feared that ths statement may cause a p.blc msunderstandng, as to the source of the funds and t s hoped that you wll he good enough to correct ths possble msunderstandng, after readng tho followre: To quote exactly from our letter to the supervsors, "The work Is to be done by funds to be rased by the Amercan Legon and tt no expense to the county." Our pr c'ple method of rasng ths money wll he to go to the publc for subscrptons and the success of the project depends largely on ther generosty n respondng to a real communty need. "Every mother's sun of us" have got to dg up n order to get ths work done, whether he belongs to the Legon or nt. In the case of Ye Kdtor we hope hs subscrpton wll be so large that he wll feel personally respon sble for the alteratons. Serously that s just the way we want every one to feel. It s the publc who are gong to buld the new armory, not the Legon. Our ambton Is merely to provde a method of "helpng (he people help themselves." Yours very truly, Tho Amercan Legon, Kaua Post No. 2; by A. KNGLEHAHD, Commander. Edtor, Garden Island, Lhue, Kaua, T. II. Dear Sr: Kapaa's Moves and Its Prces I notce that the Kapaa move theater Is n the habt of bllng cer tan well known pctures as "specal and chargng the people prce for the prvlege of seeng these pctures. I do not pretend to know very much about the move busness but would lke to ask why such specal prces are necessary when other the aters n Honolulu, Lhue or else' where, under dfferent owners, do not have to charge extra for such feattres? I understand that the theater manager clams that such pctures cost hm more to present, and I do not doubt hs word, but what hop pen3 when some pcture as old as the hllu, Insofar as the pctures are con cerned, s shown? Does he advertse a specal reduced rate for these pctures? If he does, no one seems to have any recollecton of t, but of course, these old pcturer, may have cost hm the same as new ones. The present prce of 40 cents for a char s stff enough compared wth seeng the same pctures In other localtes, but why tack on a specal prce just because he pays a lttle more to the dstrbutors. I beleve that not only the wrter but the Kapaa lovers of pctures would welcome an explanaton thru the columns of The Garden Island. MOVIE FAN. 5 THE GARDEN ISLAND, TUESDAY, MAY 23, 922 The Lhue Memoral Parsh House (Contnued from page one) e,l stage. Here wll be a place tor Bong and musc for oratoro, and opera and orchestra. Come tonght and you wll see the faryland of Shakespeare as the chldren and young people enact the "Mdsummer Nght's Dream" before your eyes. It s an auspcous begnnng of a large use of the drama both as a recreaton and as an art nterpretng some of the deeper meanngs of lfe. 'UJL y would that I wore able to express what s In my heart and n your hearts of apprecaton of these dear frends, who n ther generosty and publc sprt have erected ths buldng. When they sought to buld a memoral to those they loved, they chose ths house, beautful as the skll.and art, the sense of lne and color, of the archtect could make t and then set It here to go on servng the communty thru all the conng years. Over Its doors there Is really wrtten, thougl In Invsble letters, the words of the text of ths sermon: "I am In the mdst of you as he that serveth." Ths house stands as a.vertable ncarnaton n endurng stone and lovely archtecture of the sprt of servce whch was. Chrst and whch must be n Hs church also. A frend of mne once placed over the ext of the new church where ho was mnster these words about Jesus: "He went about dong good." A no n explanaton he sad: "That s the test of the whole matter tho musc, tha prayers, the sermon do people go out nto lfe from ths church nspred to go about ou good?" ' am sure ths beautful. buldng wll have Just that constant and quet nfluence. People who gather here from tme to tme wll feel not only the beauty of ar chltecture but also the sprt of ser vce that ' prompted ts erecton as a trbute of lovng memory ana wn be npred to go out, In, turn, as those who serve, to go about dong good. So ths parsh house, standng here n ts beatuful grove of trubd, shall spread ts nfluence throughout ths lovely sland. After the benedcton, pronounced by Rev. R. G. Hall, the frends, old and new, went out past the bronze memoral tablet wth hearts more open to the sense of the glory and dvnty of love that outlasts these changng years. In the evenng, agan Che house was crowded, not to the doors, but beyond them, to the lmts of the broad lana, by neghbors and frends eager to see the chldren, of the communty take possesson of the pretty stage and cast spells of fary' land upon t. No magcan less pow erful, and no nterpretor of human lfe less sympathetc than Shape speare would do for such an He set a noble pattern. A lordly court grouped about Duke Theseus (Adran Englehard, and queenly Hlppolyta (Edth Rce), who were splendd n ther weddng robes, and courtly n ther speech. A moonlt forest where proud Oberon (Doro thea Sloggett) and far Ttana(Lyda Bodrero) held court delghtfully and called the flowers and moths and frefles to pleasant servce, and where Puck (Arthur Sloggett) most whmscal and audacous of sprtes, worked hs wll wth clumsy mortals; and a comc scene where rustc clowns played to utter con vlncement the "fools we mortals be." Bottom was a splendd "ornery" fol for the leadng fares, the sweet DewDro p (Edth Sloggett) who opened the moonlght scene wth grace and sang her ary song and later led the swayng chorus n the queen's lulaby; Peablossom (Ruth Hobby), Cobweb (Dora Rce),Moth (Alce Scott), Mustardseed (Qlen Hopper), and the fary sentnel (Eunce Scott) who added varety and charm to the larger group. It was a true communty play as s proved when one tres from the long lst to assgn prase, for all 'helped to make the affar a success, from Mss Ethel Damon, who plan ned and worked out the detals' of the evenng's program wth untrng enthusasm, to the lttle group of fary flowers who swayed n tme to the fary musc. Mss Edth Rce proved her genus as a maker of costumes both n her strkng and lovely combnatons of color and the orgnalty and skll of her de sgnng. Mrs. carters rary groups were gay and spontaneous; Mss Karrer and Mss Hardell were n dspensable n promptng and watch ng cues; the Msses Underblls clowns nterpreted ther parts wth humorous success; and Mrs. Bayless choruses carred the sprt of the songs. Even the outsders caught the rprt of the occason. The lovely musc by the Pasmore Tro unfed and helped create the glamor of atmosphere; Mrs. Isaac Cox helped Mss Damon happly n the fnal puttng together of the vared seen es; and Mss Margaret Clarke's Set tngs for the fary songs had the llt ' elflanand swng of and the ap precaton of the beauty of the occa son was felt n the lttle chantlke sngng of the second stanza of "The Blessngs of the House" but slghtly altered from Shakespeare's closng song: "Ths pleasant chamber bless Thru the years, wth frendly peace; And the gvers of t blest Ever shall n safety rest." MOCK TRIAL AT DORMITORY "Not gulty," was the verdct of the twelve sedate and solemn Jury men, after a long and heated delb eraton of two mnutes, weghng the case of Francs Chong vs. the World, accused of appropratng co coanut cream pe and dsposng of same In the usual way, Wtnesses tor the prosecuton gave ndsputa ble and conclusve evdence that the accused was wthout queston the perpetrator of the henous crme for whch he was before tho bar of Justce. The pale features and nervous men of the prsoner were undenable evdence of gult and deserved punshment. Judge Locke called for the defense to try If possble to counter balance the overwhelmng derogatory evdence aganst the prsoner The star wtness of the defense was Mss Johnson, matron of th kaukaestablshment from whence tho s pe dsappeared. Mss Johnson's to the searchng and wary questons of Attorney. Leong, the prosecutng attorney, brought out the tact that a crme of tho nature of whch the prsoner was accused was beyond the realm of possblty. No pe, cocoanut or other speces, was ever known to survve more than one kauka perod n the envrons of the sad establshment from whence the aforesad alleged pe had supposedly dsappeared. A The Unversty PINEAPPLE PRICES UP Good news to the ndependent pneapple grower IS the announcement ot hgher prces to be pad ths year by the ca:nerles, an ncrease of nearly 20 per cent over prces of last year. Next Step forward should be better gradng and szng of pnes by a mechancal process at the cannery. Ths would do much to nsure a square deal both to the grower and to the cafrnery buyng the frut. We wll have more to say on ths subject later. THE SWEET POTATO AND GARDEN WEEDS Wth the approach of summer and school vacatons close at hand, when school and home gardens are usually abandoned to weeds, we ought to gve specal consderaton to the humble but useful sweet potato. Teachers and pupls, householders and farmers who have not yet tred plantng the sweet potato as a flli n crop would do well to set all avalable land, whch would otherwse be Ideal, to one of the rank growng varetes. We know ot none better than the New Era. The vnes cover the ground quckly, smother the weeds, mellow the sol and produce a crop at lttle cost, and wth lttle attenton. The essental part Is to gve the plunts a good start by provdng a far and clean seed bed. After ths they wll take care of themselves f nevescsary. Make your: plans now to grow sweet potatoes n pluce of weeds durng the long dry summer months whch wll soon be upon us. Select well matured cuttngs rather than soft succulent ones; unless your sol s' especally mellow and farly most. Ths b essental to gettng a good full stand, wthout whch weeds are Bure to crowd n and replace the otherwse unversally adaptable sweet potato. INSECTS IN STORED FOODS We do not know Just how much money Is lost every year n Hawa from destructon of stored foods by rsetcts, but we know the loss s enormous. Rce, corn, barley, flour, beans, peas, dred fruts, dred fsh, and meats and many other knds of food In storage are attacked and devoured by varous knds of nsects. The loss n the Unted States from these enemes s sad to be over 00 mllon dollars every year. In addton to eatng and destroyng thousands of dollars worth of food n Hawa, these nsects' also contamnatng wth ther posons the food they do not eat. Experments carred on n Oho prove that these contamnated foods cause serous sckness. One scentst states as hs belef that eatng rce contamnated by weevls causes berber l. Protect the stored food crops whch you rase, for losses n storage from nsects may remove all your proft. Protect also the food stuffs you buy and keep n temporary storage, for these may be attacked by the same Insects and you suffer loss there, too. How to Protect Many experments have shown that beat s one of the best and cheapest protectons aganst these destructve nsects. A temperature of 25 or 30 degrees Fhr. Is fatal to them If manfo r an hour or more, but ths does not hurt the stored foods and does not kll the germnatng power of corn Another good method Is fumgaton wth placng the carbonbsulphd stuff to be treated n an ar tght room or chest, and puttng n carbonbsulphd e and beans. Of course, one has to be very careful to not let the temperature run too hgh or Injury wll result. at the rate of one ounce to Carbonbsulphd 25 cubc feet ot space. e s exposve and Inflammable and also has a very dsagreeable odor. For small amounts of stored foods to be treated, we beleve that mld heat n an oven s the best. It wll pay every farmer and householder to gve thought to ths matter. If more detaled nformaton s wanted we wll be glad to furnsh It. For the use of heat on a large Bcale aganst destructve nsects we suggest that Bulletn 354 of the Oho Experment sta ton, Wooster, Oho,' publshed Janu, ary be sent for. COMMERCIAL BANANA VARIETIES FOR HAWAII The successful establshment of a crop as a new ndustry Is frequently more dependent upon the selecton and development of a sutable varety or varetes than upon any other factor. The deal varety of any crop s one that most nearly meets (). the commercal requrements of the markets where t s sold, and (2) the cultural condtons under, whch t Is grown, such as clmate, sols, shppng dstance, etc. Hgglns, (n Bulletn 7, Hawa Experment staton, 904) enumerates at least ten ntroduced varetes of bananas and double that number of natve sorts growng n Hawa. Most of these, whle they succeed well under favorable condtons' and are used more or less extensvely here, have not thus far Lee: consdered consdered as commercal varetes, exceptg n the Chnese or, Canary Island varety (Musa Cavendshl). Ths s a dwarf type of very fne q'sl'y g wherever bananas grow n Hawa. It s sad to have been Introduced from Taht about 855. Its habt of low growth s much n ts favor, especally when grown n wndy places. It bears large bunches under favorable condtons of sol mosture and exposure, ts flavor and texture s consdered superor to that of most other varetes to be eaten out of the hand. Its only drawback s that t requres very careful handlng n shppng, but wth reasonable care t stands shpment well. It s hgl ly esteemed n San Francsco and other Pacfc coast markets, even though the retal dealers fnd fault wth ts keepng qualtes. Ths varety would appear to be safe one to plant extensvely by all who contemplate growng bananas commercally n Hawa. The Jamacan or, BJuefeld banana also known as Martnque (M. saplentum ) was ntroduced nto Hawa In 903 by Phllp Peck of Hlo, and also by the terrtoral board of agrculture and forestry In the same year. Ths s the chef commercal varety of the world and the prncpal one of the Amercan trade. It Is the prncpal varety grown n Central Amerca and Jamaca and forms the great bulk of the Unted Frut company's trade. The chef mert of the Bluefel d banana s ts remarkable shppng qualty and the fne appearance of ts well developed bunches. However, ts flavor Is' only far and ts texture s coarse compared wth the dwarf Chnese varety, whch, s so frmly and favorably establshed n Hawa. The plants of the Bluefeld are very large and tall, whch s a cultural dsadvntage n wndward locatons, as the plunts are lkely to go down n a strong wnd. In well sheltered rch lands t grows to a Lgh state of perfecton n Hawa, and we have seen bunches weghng up to 00 pounds grown locally. Untold possbltes are In store for the breeder, of a superor stran of bananas. HONOLULU MARKET PRICES Beef and pork prces are about as last week. Eggs are frm at 65 cents a doz. wth the supply becomng gradually more scarce and a tendency toward hgher prces, though the present quotaton Is expected to hold for several weeks. Bununus vary n prce a good deal accordng to qualty, averagng from 3 to 4 cents per lb., wth 5 cents of fered by some for extra qualty bunches. Cabbage s up a lttle just now, around 2 cents per lb., but It s not steady. Papayas are frm at 2 and 2 cents per lb. Sweet potatoes brng from 2 to 2 2 cents per lb. Whte potatoes (Calforna) cost about 2 cents per lb lad down n Honolulu, but Island grown whte po tutoes brng a lttle hgher than that. Watermelons are abundant now, ' dealers payng 3 to 3 cents per pound.
