Ths s undoubtedly the fore runner of a general reducton of prces n the automoble ndustry, and t was to be expected that Henry Ford would set the ex ample. Mr. Ford says, "The war s over HGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FND FAMOUS FLY-TRA- P PLANT Four Hgh School boys, Wm. Homer B. Tracy, Ernest Wede-meye- r and P. The boys reached Kokee about 10:30 Frday evonlng and next day wont over the tral to the Alakal Swamp or bog, where along the edges the desred plant was found n far abundance. Specmens were carred back n a pal to the Kaua Hgh School where they may be seen. The plant s very famous n bologcal study, and comparatvely few people have the prvlege of studyng t. Ths plant actually catches fles and mosqutoes alve, for food, and for ths purposo the whole plant body s hghly specalzed. t presents many nterestng subjects for study. J. S. LHUE and t s tme hgh prces were over. There s no sense or wsdom n tryng to mantan an artfcal standard of values. For the best nterest of all, t s tme a real practcal effort was made to brng cover hmself the busness of the country and the lfe of the country to regular pre-wa- r standards." WNS T GAME Lhue defeated McBryde, eght to seven, n a hard fought game at Eleele last Sunday afternoon, thereby earnng the rght to play ol" the te game wtl Makee whch holds a chance for the champonshp. f Lhue can defeat Makee next Sunday, these two teams wll then be ted for the champonshp of the 1020 seres. Tlv Game Hotl teams started off n a rath er ragged manner; especally Lhue. Although they collected four runs n ther frst, tnle at bat, they almost splled the beans by ther ragged feldng. Mtsu was on the mound for Lhue the frst three nnngs, and durng that tme McBryde collected no less than seven runs. Ta was then put n the box and held the home boys scoreless for the other sx nnngs of the game. Ths was Tas frst appearance n the box bs season and le certanly dd wth glory and put pep nto hs team mates, who bucked up and played real ball from then on. McBryde played ther usual good game of ball, but Robello was not up to hs usual standard and handed passes to several Lhue players at crtcal moments. True to the polcy that lllo had set for the conventon, that t should be a sesson of serous purpose, the meetng was called to order a lttle after 0 oclock, the necessary prelmnares were expedtously dsposed of and the program was taken up. A bref word of welcome was extended by Dr. Bce, the charman elect, to whch Mr. A. Lews of Honolulu, responded wth much grace, as well as good common sense. le emphaszed the fact that development was ever the polcy of lawa lookng forward to greater and better thngs, and t was partcularly fttng that ths Cvc Conventon should meet here n Hlo whch had behnd t the largest amount of country and the greatest possbltes of development, le furthermore suggested the danger that there was, n our sland communtes, separated as they were by broad stretches of sea, n thnkng n terms of the local slands and ther own mmedate nterests. We were here on ths occason partcularly to thnk n the terms of the whole Terrtory The Governor, who had come over on the Super Drednaught New Mexco to attend tho Conventon, was met by an Ad Club ovaton song: Oh, were glad to see you, Governor, Wth your hand n your pocket, And your lttle chan and locket, etc" The Governor thought that these cvc conventons were a mghty good thng n more ways than one. For one thng they sort of kept a check on the publc offcals, who, he admtted, needed watchng, but who werent as bad as some people made them out. Ono thng whch mado them what they were was that just when they were gettng down to a bearng they were superseded by a new man. Followng the Governors address there camo several formal papers whch were already prnted and n the hands of tho delegates. They were: "Boy Scouts of Amerca," by George R. Carter; "General As pects of Socal Welfare Work n tho Terrtory," by Charles A. Puck, of Maul; "Sugar Plantaton and Welfare Work," by D. S. Bowman; "Socal Welfare Work on Oahu," by Margaret short to frst.henderson grounds out short to frst. No runs. Sxth nnng Lhue Prosto goes out ptcher to frst. Texera fans. Mtsu out ptcher to frst. McBryde Medoros struck out. Gabrel grounded short to frst and (Contnued on Page 8) E E Bergln, of tho Assocated Chartes, Honolulu; "What Wo Arc Dong On Mau," by C. S. Chlds, of Maul; "What We Are Dong On Hawa," by Mss OUollly, of Hlo. J. M. Lydgate made an mpromptu oral report of what we rtre dong on Kaua, whch met wth partcular favor, snce t was a drect talk, not overloaded wth statstcs and spced wth a dash of humor. n addton to these regular elements off tho program there wore several specals ntroduced because they were present and avalable. C. S. Robnson, the Y. M. C. A. man, now tourng tho slands, gavo a characterstc humorous talk on "The Knds of Boys." A. T. Atknson read a comprehensve paper on "The Dongs of the Board of Agrculture and Forestry," and Dr. Dean, of the Unversty of Hawa, gave an nterestng and llumnatng account of what that nsttuton s dong and plannng. Altogether t made a very full and very proftable day, whch amply justfed the polcy outlned by the Hlo peoplo n ther nvtaton, to make the conventon reany cvc, serous and worth whle. There was of course, a largo amount of meat n the varous papers they wll be prnted n the proceedngs of the conventon, and should be read by all ntellgent people; but they wll not, so venture to call attenton to some of the outstandng ponts of genera "nterest. On the whole, 1 thnk the most sg nfcant welfare work of the Terrtory s beng done by tho plantatons. They have the feld thoy have the money they have the facltes and now, at length, they have tho nclnaton. Bowman, as drector of plantaton ndustral servce, was n a poston to gve much nformaton, and he dd. He reports that on many plantatons excellent dares are beng operated where mlk s sold at a prce wthn the means of all. Ono plantaton has Bpent over $100,000 for an adequate supply of pure water. Vstng nurses aro now employed on nearly all the plantatons; on tho larger ones, more than one. n addton to tho more famlar dutes of thoso nurses they do a great deal of excellent work runnng dspensares, supervsng day nurseres, gvng homo lessons n household management, preparaton of baby food, nfant caro, cookng lessons, supervson of chld play, etc. "Staple goods are beng sold n plantaton stores at as near cost as possble. Many stores show no proft at tho end of the years busness." "Most plantaton vllages have moton pcture theatres where regular shows are gven. The bureau has arranged for a regular flm servce n order that proper flms may bo shown and contemplates provdng a good clean vaudevlle show once a month." Your correspondent expressed hs satsfacton at ths movng pcture nformaton and hoped that ths commendable enterprse mght solve the movng pcture problem n small communtes. Ho nqured whether these shows would be open to tho general publc, and about when ths servce would bo naugurated on Kaua. Mr. Bowman thought thero would be no reason for excludng tho general publc, and that tho servce would be naugurated on Kaua n November. WM. STODART GOES TO PHLPPNE SLANDS Mr. Wm. For tho month of August there were 1202 local passengers arrvng at Honolulu, and 2152 through LOUS DEFEATS SANZAN Before one of t he largest aud-erne- s that ever packed he Tp Tt.p theatre, Lous Rego defeated the Japanese, Senzan, n two straght falls Saturday nght. The frst fah was made n four mnutes, and the second n thrty-thre- e mnutes. Senzan was no easy mark n fact he had the whte boy down several tmes, and only the fact that Rego was ol the mat wth part of hs body, saved hm. However, that part of t was ffty-ffty-, as Rego had the Japanese n the same poston, when referee Chl-lngwort- h made them break and get on the mat. t was very plan to be seen that Senzan was not on to the trcks of "haole" wrestlng, as he would get hs man at a dsadvantage and wouldnt know what to do next to follow up that advantage. n the second round Uego let hs opponent do most of the leadng. Uego would get down on the mat on hs knees and elbows, wth hs feet under hm where the Jap could not get at them for a toe hold, and just take t easy. These tactcs sorely tred Senzan, who apparently had hs man at hs mercy but dd not know what to do wth hm. He would walk around Rego wth a puzzled look upon hb face, tryng to fnd a pont of attack. Fnally after thrty three mnutes most of whch was spent n ths manner. Senzan thought he saw a chance, and grabbed for hs man. Ths s just what Rego nal been watng. As Senzan made hs grab, Rego was up and at hm, and n less tme than t takes to tell t, had hs man flat. Tho Japanese boy put up a good fght but Regos superor knowledgo of the European style of wrestlng proved the decdng factor n the match. Good Prelmnares Two dandy prelmnares were put on as openers. Tho frst bout, between "Colo S" Moses and Joe Lucas, went to "Colo 8" n two straght falls of 1 mnute and 4V4 mnutes each. "Colo 8" s a mlnaturo Hercules of about 5 ft. 3 nches. n the flrst round ho grabbed hs larger opponent, pcked hm up bodly and slammed hm down on the mat. The second round lasted a lttle longer, but Lucas had no chance aganst the "Colo 8." Tho second bout, between Marlon Perrera, of Hanamaulu and Sam Penekou of McBryde, n some respects was a better bout than the man ovent. Those two boys were very evenly matched and showed remarkable skll for novces. Penekou got the flrst fall n 8 mnutes. The second round (Contnued on Page C) BOXNG MATCH NEXT ON THE PROGRAM E. Chllugworth states that he has arrangements on tho way for a boxng homo-steadebout between Ernest Hene, r of Kapaa and Salor Fsher of Honolulu, who has ssued a sweepng challenge to all lght woghts of the Terrtory. Hene used to be a great lttle lad wth tho mts n few years ago, and no doubt could gve Fsher annterestng tme of t. an nterestng tme of t. wllng to tako on Fsher at any tme. :o : A NEW WELDNG MACHNE W. Catton, Nell & Co., Ltd. Engneers, Honolulu Homesteaders Answer Horners Open Letter The Kapaa Homesteaders and Co operatve Assocaton, n a meetng held September 12, ordered the follow ng letter to be wrtten n answer to Albert Horners "Open Letter" to the homesteaders: Mr. Albert Horner, Sr., Terrtoral Sugar Expert. Dear Sr: n reply to your "Open Letter" of September 9, 1920, we beg to make the followng observatons: Hghly Cultvated Lands. Only the fourth seres, Kapaa, were hghly cultvated lands. Prevous to homestead-h- g of these lands they were leased to the Mtkee Sugar Company for one dollar ($1) per acre for the frst crop and fve dollars ($5) per acre for a second crop. Frst, Second, Thrd and Waalua Seres were all pasture lands and leas ed to the plantaton at twenty-fv- e cents (0.25) per acre. Homesteaders have developed to Us present condton, to such an extent that ther taxaton value today amounts to $252, 215. Ths ncludes the Fourth Seres. Would the government derve such an ncome from these lands f they were yet leased to the plantaton? Hgh Prced Wages and Profts. Con sderng the abnormal condtons of the sugar market, s t surprsng that homesteaders should have receved such prces for ther cane and real zed on ther crop the sums that you clam? f sugar was at 10 cents, nstead of at 23 cents, what then? Further, no homesteader wth twenty acres acres of land could obtan a proft of from $7000 to $12,000 on hs crop. Even f the average expense of these homesteaders was as they clamed, from three hundred and twenty ($320) to three hundred and ffty dollars ($350) per acre for brng ng ther crop to maturty. The hgh cost of labor applyng n ths case only for harvestng, and costng from one hundred to two hundred and nnety-s- x dollars per acre. Could Not Pay Bonus To your statement that the hgh wages pad to laborers by homestead ers caused you great astonshment, we beg to state the followng: Home steaders weren ot able and could not pay ther labor on a yearly bonus bass. At the tme the Waalua and other Seres were plantng, cultvatng and harvestng ther cane the plantatons were payng ther laborers from $4.30 to $5.70 per day, ths ncludng the full bonus for May, June and July. Add to ths housng, medcal attendance, wood, water, etc. Do you blame a laborer for demandng from the homesteaders $4.50 and more per day wthout these convenences? Would you blame the homesteader for payng such wage f he wanted hs homestead cultvated or Harvested? Further a number of these homesteaders to whom you are gvng such pous and knd advce had to pay to the plantaton from $4.50 to $7 per ton of cane harvested, whle other homesteaders, hrng hgh-wag- e laborers, were payng from $3 to $4.50 per ton - Cast Your Ballot hurvested. Have you also nvestgated ths? We agree heartly wth you that some ot us were stung by unscrupulous laborers or contractors n the supplyng of seed cane. Who was to blame? Who furnshed the seed? How many homesteaders have you vsted and advlsetl on ths subject? Speakng of wages, we agan ask, who was the frst to boost labor wages n the Kapaa dstrct? When home steaders were payng from $1 to $1.25 per day, who went around and offered from 25 cents to 50 cents more per day? About Automobles Extravagance.. You make menton ot the expensve automobles purchased by homesteaders. Well, we are not nterested enough to enqure how many autos you have, or how much you pad for them. Why should you? We are more nterested to fnd out the expedency of employng a sugar expert at fve hundred dollers ($500) per month, when n return the homestead ers receve so lttle. For these are the ones that are supposed to be benefted. n the matter of cultvaton and ma chnery: Would you, Mr. Horner, advse a homesteader wth small captal to nvest, say, two thousand to three thousand dollars n a tractor, mules, etc., and pay nterest at 8 on same (for he would have to borrow ths amount), when he can hre the work done at a far less outlay of money? Would t pay a homesteader wth a tract of land, say twenty acres, to nvest n farm mplements up to three thousand dollars to be used for the perod of sx months n two years tme? How do you know the homesteaders are dle whle ther lands are beng cultvated by others? Can you menton an nstance where a homesteader s out at work at the wage lesr than that pad by hm to hs laborers? Have we or have we not the rght to hre necessary help or contract for the cultvaton of our crops the moment we make the homestead our home and supervson over our work? Dd you or dd you not approve, as government expert, n conjuncton wth the Governor and Land Comms soner, some ot these contracts that you wrte about? Dd you at the tme advse the homesteader to enter nto contract for the cultvaton of hs cane? f you dd not, why come out at ths tme n the publc press and gve us advce when by your actons you have shown small nterest n the home steaders affars? Alen Contractors. n your letter you state that f the present practce of homesteaders n enterng nto con tracts wth alens for the cultvaton of ther crops was to be brought to the attenton of congress that body would mmedately put a stop to any home steadng. All homestead agreements requre that contracts for the cultva ton of crops must be approved by the Governor and Land Commssoner; more recently the new homestead agreements requre the approval of the sugar expert. Now we ask you, at the tme ot approvng these contracts dd you know the contractors were alens? Why, then, dd you approve the contract? Who broke the sprt of the homestead laws? Dd you not have the power to prevent such an abuse? J. F. BETTENCOURT. JR., Presdent for self ndependence by openng a Pavngs Account wlh us. We pay four per cent. 4 THE GARDEN SLAND KENNETH C. HOPPER TUESDAY ssued f.l.y YOU AXSWER THESE QUESTOXS, MR. VAX 1)1 HATE? "An Open Letter to All Terrtoral Canddates," by tle Amercan Legon, publshed n ths ssue of the Garden sland, contans a set of questons all Terrtoral canddates should be able to gve ntellgent answers to. They are questons dealng wth ssues of paramount mportance n the lfe of ths Terrtory, and every canddate should thoroughly understand them and have decded opnons regardng them., SUGARS 1XDUSTRAL MlORTAME The majorty of the consumers of sugar are so far removed from contact wth the sources o t producton that they have lttle realza-wo- o ll e extent of the ndustry or of ts mportance as a bass for trade. lven among bus.ess men who are more than ordnarly well nformed as to general ndustral affars, surprse s often expressed when statstcs showng the vast extent and worldwde ramfcatons of the sugar trade are brought to ther attenton. The fact that sugar s consumed n relatvely small quanttes by the average householder and that hs drect acquantance wth t s co lned to nspecton of the. few barrels, bags and cartons that contan the stock of the grocer from whom he purchases, hs supples affords lttle bass for a true apprecaton of ether the extent or the mportance of ts part n the worlds ndustral drama. The true ndex of the poston occuped by sugar n the worlds busness s jftorded by the unversalty of ts use. t s of the few food products that s demanded by every race n every clme. lven wheat, though often referred to as the worlds great staple, s n regular use by less than half the populaton of the globe. Sugar, however, n one form or another, s a commodty that helps to satsfy the detary needs of all people and ts consumpton ncreases n drect rato wth ther rse- n well-bengcvlzaton and n materal. An mpresson of the proportons of the worlds sugar trade may be ganed from consderaton of the fact that upward of 000,0(10 wll be expended by consumers for the crop now n process of producton and dstrbuton. Ths huge sum ncludes not only the amount receved by sugar producers and by the labor employed n the makng and handlng of the crop, but represent also a vast expendture for malerals, supples and transportaton and a lberal contrbuton toward the (s.-a- l expenses of all the leadng natons whose governments depend upon the taxaton of sugar for a materal part of ther revenues. As llustratng the poston of leadershp n the producton of sugar attaned by Cuba, t s noteworthy that the value of ts crop for the season now approachng ts close wll be upward of a bllon dollars. Second place belongs to the nted States, wth ts nsular terrtores, whch wll have a combned output approachng 8000,000,000 n market value. Java ranks next among the worlds producers Every Tuesday THE GARDEN tsland, TUESDAY, SEPT. 23, 1920 Managng Edtor SEPT. 28, 1!V20 wth a crop ths year that wll attan a value of roundly 4.0,0H).00. All Europe wll produce somewhat less than Cuba alone. Sugar s the mansprng of the rapdly expandng commerce between Cuba and the nted States and between the manh l and the nsular terrtores. Notwthstandng the mportance of the Cuban tobacco trade, shpments of sugar comprse over S" per cent of the total value of all Cuban exports to the nted States. Sugar shpments from Hawa to the contnental nted States form nearly M) per cent of the total Vtlue of all products, whle n the case of lorto Kco sugars proporton s over."0 hv cent. n 1010 shpments of goods from the contnental nted States to Hawa, lorto H co. the Phlppnes and Cuba were valued at , all of whch were pad for. wth a substantal balance left over, by sales of :C worth of sugar n the Amercan market. Ths years sales by the contnental.nted States to Cuba and the nsular terrtores probably wll approach jf7r as aganst purchases of nearly a bllon dollars worth of sugar. ulke many of the prncpal foregn customers of the nted States, whose purchases consst largely of unmanufactured food products and other jaw materals, the slands that supply ths country wth the greater part of ts sugar take n exchange machnery and manufactured products the makng of whch requres the extensve employment of sklled labor and mechancal equpment. From the pont of vew of the ndustral development of the country the sale of such products s recognzed as havng much greater value than the sale of raw foodstuffs or other raw materals. n the nternal commerce of the country, too, sugar plays a much more mportant part than s generally apprecated. The value of the beet and cane sugar crops of the contnental Unted States amlj ther promses ths year to reach a total close to S:r0,000,000. n the retnng and dstrbutng of sugar and the producton and handlng of syrups and nmlnsscs mllons of dollars of captal and tens of thousands of men are employed. n transportaton charges alone sugar pays SMO.000,000 or more a year to the steamshp and ralway lnes of the country. The value of the sugar ndustrys products measures ts mportance as a market for every knd of materal and supples employed n the agrcultural and manufacturng phases of sugar producton. Front plowng and cultvatng utensls to ralway equpment, mll machnery and supples and contaners for the fnshed product, the sugar ndustry of the Unted States am Cuba wll dsburse a bllon dollars a year n materal, labor, machnery and supples. At the present tme, when the producton of sugar s enterng upon the greatest perod of expanson n ts hstory, the manufacturers of the vast varety of equpment and supples adpted to ts operatons are fndng n ths feld a market of unrvalled appeal and mportance. ANOTHER PLANK N MY PLATFORM REGARDNG TAXES Do yon beleve n economy? Sd do? Economy n assessng taxes. Eco nomy n upendng them. Less dead heads and bench warmers on the pay roll: more lve wres attendng strctly to busness. Economy? Sure thng. Hut! That knd of economy whch leaves publc buldngs neglected, and publc roads unrepared; whch lets the kds run wld and unschooled untl they become the communtys goats; whch allows cattle and horses n the nuble streets unrestraned; whch n dfferently observes the contnued use of ntoxcatng lquors wth a laugh and a shrug of the shoulders; that economy whch permts these thngs because of a lack of funds or a lack of publc sprt s an economy whch closes the Spgot and opens wde the nunc! Some homesteaders do not seem to agree wth Mr. Horners vews, and even went so far as to say tlt hs poston was to advse and nl to crlcze the methods of the homesteaders, that he was workng togcher wth the plantatons, etc. Others wth more : oserval ve deas, seem to agree that Mr. Horners ponts are well taken, that tn- hgh wages - mentoned are beng actually pad, a also that t s true that the homesteaders themselves, by competng wth each oler for the servces of laborers, have put common labor on a premum. The homesteaders however. defend t leuseh es by sayng that where there s no system establshed by whch all homesteaders would pay the same wages that the plantatons are payng from mouth to month, lls competton s a sort of "necessary evl." Several suggested that f Mr. Horner could work out a system whch would make the wages pad plantaton laborers and homestead laborers as nearly unform as possble, ths evl may eventually be eradcated, but expressed no confdence th.t such a system could work to the satsfacton of all concerned, as there s nothng to prevent any homesteader from payng more wages than another wthout hs neghbor knowng about t. provded of course, he has the means and can do t wthout the help of the plantaton. o on, voc F.UAHUTATOS HLL! From OFFCER N CHARGE OF GUN THAT STRUCK BALLOON TO BE TRED y The offcer n command o! the battery at Fort Ruger last week when a shell from one ot the guna struck an army balloon, tearng off the rght arm or Corporal Claud Phpps and endangerng the lfe of Capt. Lee Felt, observer, s to be tred by general courtmartal, t s reported. Army offcers are stll nvestgatng why t was that after frng was supposed to have ceased, another shell was fred, penetratng the basket of the balloon. Full detals of the accdent of September 14 were learned today. Corporal Phpps s n Trpler general hosptal, wth hs rght arm amputated! Just above the elbow. t was prac-- j tlcally torn off by the shell exploson, only a few shreds of skn and flesh holdng t together. Accordng to the story told The Star-Bulle- tn by wtnesses of the accdent, the captan and the corporal had ascended n the balloon at Fort Ruger to a heght of about GOO feet. They were about 900 feet from the battery, whch was frng shells, about one nch n dameter, from a gun several tmes that sze probably a 4.6 nch pece of artllery. Several shorts had been fred durng half an hour, all gong over the balloon. Then one of the guns of the battery fred agan for some reason not yet clear. The shell, nstead of passng over the balloon, ht the basket and exploded. t s beleved ts course may have been deflected by camouflage wres sursoundng the gun emplacement, one of the wres possbly deflectng the shot. The shell also tore fve holes n the balloon tself. Cant. Lee Felt, who was seated n the bottom of the basket operatng the telephone, was struck by a splnter of the nstrument board torn from the sde of the basket. Another fragment of the Bhell appears to have cut the telephone wres leadng from the balloon to the bat the Other slands tery, so that there was no telephonc means of communcatng wth the balloon men on the ground. "For Gods sake cut out that frng: youve ht us," yelled Corporal Phpps down to the wnchman and other enlsted men o fthe 3rd balloon company, to whom the balloon belonged. The balloon was mmedately hauled down. Phpps yell to cease frng was heard dstnctly by the battery, 300 yards away. Corporal Phpps dd not lose conscousness or fant, wtnesses say. He exhbted the greatest courage. Whle the balloon was beng hauled down he had the Captan Felt make a tournquet to stop the flow of blood from hs arm. The almost severed arm was bleedng terrbly, and blood from the basket drpped to the ground. An enlsted man who was drvng a truck loaded wth rock heard the shell ht the basket and explode. He drove hs truck up at the top speed, and Corporal Phpps was removed from the balloon and placed on a mattress from the balloon guards tent, on top ot the crushed rock, and rushed to the Fort Ruger dspensary, where the stump of hs arm was bound up and the flow ot blood stopped. From Ruger he was rushed to Trpler general hosptal, where hs arm was amputated. The young solders parents lve n Modesto, Calf.
