Mau Guardsmen Get Heartfelt Send-O- ff Tears Mark The Leavng Of Local Companes Thousands Gather t Kahulu To Take Part In Patrotc Program In Ther Honor There were tears and sobs mngled wth the cheers and laughter and musc that marked the departure of Maura Natonal uuardsmen for real war duty last Sunday afternoon. nd as the Inter-Islan- steamer Klonuen backed away d from the wharf at Kahulu at 6 oclock, the wet eyes were not confned to mothers, wves and sweethearts left behnd, for many a young solder leanng over the vessels ral had hs last glmpse of loved ones dmmed by a mst of tears. But Maul made a brave show n sendng her sons away to take ther place wth the defenders of lberty. From before 3 oclock untl the boat left, thousands of people from all parts of central Mau packed the approach to the wharf almost to suffocaton, all anxous to shake hands wth the solder boys acd to wsh them Godspeed on ther way. commttee of the Mau branch of the mercan Defense Socety, headed by J. Pneapple Company Is Warnng Growers Feas Plant Wll Be Swamped By Tremendous Yeld In 920 Unless Halt Is Called Hgh Prces Stmu late Plantng Because the Haku Frut & Pack ng Company rears that t wll not have capacty suffcent to pack the 320 yeld of frut on Mau, growers have been lately warned aganst makng any further plantngs ths present season. There are sad to be already U00 acres or more of ths year s plant Ings whch wll come Into bearng 920. Ths does not nclude any of tne company s own plantngs. n offcal of the cannery company, n confrmng the report that growers have been warned aganst plantng more frut ths year.stated that wth the rattoon crop due to come off n 920 a total of 2000 or more acres of frut may be counted on for that year. t the conservatve estmate of 5 tons per acre, ths wll yeld about 30,000 tons of frut, equvalent to between 900,000 and,000,000 cases of canned pneapple. No cannery n the terrtory has yet had a years pack of ths sze. The Haku cannery, whch wll ths year handle the frut heretofore packed by the Mau Pneapple Company, expects to pack ths season between 350,000 and 400,000 cases. The 99 pack wll probably run about 600,000 and the 920 pack close to a mllon cases. Doubt as to the companys ablty to expand ts plant rapdly enough to handle the enormous tonnage In sght, s reason for the warnng to the growers. The hgh prces at present and n prospect have stmulated a great amount of plantng durng, the past year. v- - Mrs. E. P. 3 8 Months More War Thnks Lt Vllers Son Of Mau Pastor Wrtes Optmstc Letter From "Somewhere In France" Valor Of lled Troops Is Insprng letter, receved a few days go by Rev. and Mrs. J. C. Vllers from ther son, Lt. C. H. Vllers, who s "somewhere n France", hs most usual address snce late n the year 95, when he joned the Canadan expedtonary forces, has some ponts of Interest n t whch, though wrtten for prvate readng only may well be shared wth a large crcle of readers. The wrter Bays: "In your letter Just read, you sad that Father was rather down In the mouth about the war, or dstressed s the word you used I thnk. Really no one should let t wegh too much on ther mnds. We all realze the sacrfce of lfe that wll have to be made before vctory s ours but ts the only way. The boys have an old song they sng on route marches whch ends up So pack all your troubles n your old kt bag, and smle, smle, smle. whch Is the way the average solder looks on the thng. The shells are bad, the mud Is worse, but whats the use of worryng, t never was worth whle, so pack all, etc. "The present fght whch has caused the lles to lose consderable ground has been a most expensve operaton for the Germans. s a matter of fact I was a lttle down In the mouth one day but fortunately a letter from one of the boys reached me and t was so wonderfully hopeful that I felt tremendously bucked up. It was full of the mast beautful optmsm. When one has been n France for eghteen months, and more, one feels rather out of touch wth thngs n England, and ths letter came as a great tonc to me. "The war s absolutely one of men power: terrtory s of secondary Im portance, and If by losng a certan hll the Germans are lorcea to pay a pce greater than that whch we would consder ourselves Justfed In sacrfcng to retan t then t cannot be looked upon as an unmtgated success for hm or loss for us. know most of the terrtory he has taken very well and I have a sort of personal nterest In many of the places, places where we have been In rest and wth whch are assocated many pleasant and amusng memores. To relate half of them would take pages so we must save them untl they can be personally related. But really one s lable to fall nto the error of the pessmst who through a glass sees a defect n the pllar over whch he greves and fals to see the beauty of the cathedral as a whole. That Isnt meant for Father, rather ts for my self, because at tmes I do get a bt fed up. "But one must look at the many dfferent phases and theatres of the war. Take our navy and the Zee-- brugge affar. Even admttng the loss of lfe, and dscountng as much as one lkes the mltary or naval values ganed, yet the magnfcent courage of the men alone Is enough to make everyone thrll wth prde. It should become one of the outstandng features of naval hstory. "The Germun seem to be less able to do as they please, as tme goes on, and our ar servce s dong well. Fnally our army. Imagne any troops beng able to wthstand the masses of enemy nfantry after the poundng of the enemy artllery! Why, on the day of the Vlmy scrap, after our barrage of Frtzs trenches he was so completely routed that our nfantry almost walked over and met wth very lttle resstance. Not so, however, wth the lled troops who fought aganst the most overwhelmng masses after havng been subjected to as great an artllery poundng as were the Germans at Vlmy. It makes one awfully proud. "I have never thought the war would be over before ths year, and now I am extendng my tme another egtheen months. Of course nternal troubles n Germany and ustra, especally the latter, may brng thngs to a head sooner, but I doubt t. How ever as to the ultmate ssue none of us have any doubt Its merely a case of pressng the lps a bt harder and carryng on. " Raymond Would Not Consder Health Job No one was authorzed to ubb Dr. J. H. Raymonds name n connecton wth the charmanshp of the terrtoral board of health, or any other poston n the terrtoral government. Dr. Raymond made ths statement emphatcally followng the publcaton recently of a report that hs name had been mentoned n connecton wth board of health job. The report frst appeared as specal correspondence to the Hlo and stated Post-Heral- that certan Maul legslators had been soundng the comng governor, C. J. McCarthy on the subject. "There s no poston wthn the gft of the Governor that I would consder for a moment", Raymond stated. "I c6uld not afford to do so on account my prvate busness. I permtted Dr. Goodhue, an old personal frend, to suggest my name for the governorshp, becaause I recognzed the njury the lquor traffc s dong the Islands, and was wllng to do what I could to brng about prohbton. But I was never an actve canddate and never followed up the presentaton of my name by Dr. Goodhue. I could ll have afforded to accept the governorshp, and any talk of board of health presdency or other publc offce s rdculous." Latest News By Wreless (Contnued from Page One.) It. serves partcularly to brng together for comparson the agrcultural accomplshments of the whole terrtory. In ths way t cannot but be a stmulus to all classes of agrcultural ndustry n the Islands. It s a bnder that must serve to brng the component parts of the terrtory closer together. But the terrtoral far should not be consdered as a substtute for the county fars. If ths dea s allowed to preval the future of the bg central far must certanly be jeopardzed. It must nevtably drop nto the status of an Oahu county far unless the keenest nterest of all the people of all the slands can be mantaned. To keep up ths nterest the people must be able to have more than a passve, or by proxy part n t. They must be able to see the results of ther nterest wth ther own eyes. Ths wll never be possble to the degree necessary for success. Perhaps one hundred persons from Mau attended the bg far ths week. Hawa and Kaua probably sent fewer than ths. ll over the manland are held annually bg state and nterstate fars. But these have not taken the place of the lttle county fars, notwthstandng the fact that they are much more accessble to the publc than a far n Honolulu can ever be. In fact the county fars act as feeders and make possble the bg fars. Nether Hlo nor Mau held ther fars ths year on account of the tertoral far. nd yet both of these county fars have been great successes. They really reached the people. Maus one far n 96 was attended by almost every person on Mau and no one doubts that t had a wonderfully stmulatng effect n many drectons. It served to brng together the whole people of Mau to develop an esprt de corps as nothng had ever done before. nother Mau county far wll be accomplshed wth much less effort than the frst one because of the experence we have had n or ganzng and handlng the varous detals. In fact we stll have a tho roughly effcent and lve executve organzaton n the Mau County Far & Racng ssocaton. It mght be found advsable to hold the terrtoral far every other year, the county fars beng held every year as orgnally planned. o THE RODEO PSSING PSTIME The kllng of a husky young man durng the ropng contest at the Honolulu far on Monday may cause a revulson of sentment wth regard to ths form t)f amusement. The game s a rsky one at best. But n a number of manland states cattle ropng contests have teen put under the ban of the law for other reasons. The humane socetes have worked aganst the sport as cruel to the poor half wld cattle whch bear the brunt of t, and ther nfluence has been felt. But the factor whch took the game off the program was the opposton of the bg cattle ranchers. It developed that the enthusasm of the cowboys to perfect themselves for the great rodeo events, not only spent a great deal of ther employers tme practcng ther specaltes before band, but also that the mamng and otherwse njurng of cattle prac tced upon had reached such proportons that the cost was altogethe too great to be stood by the owners. Wth the mprovng of cattle breeds n the Islands, and the pass ng of the days of the wld steer, t s very certan that the day of th old tme, conventonal cowboy, must soon draw to a close, as t has done or s dong everywhere. WTCH OUT FOR THE DNGEROUS HUN! Honolulu has ts vglance corps, but that dd not prevent a crazy German from runnng amuck, fatally woundng hs wfe, at temptng to kll hs daughter, and fnally blowng hs own brans out nd yet the man s reported to have been "actng queer" for some tme re there any "queer" Germans htre on Mau, we wonder? It should be consdered a duty by everyone to note and report any acts or language on the part of alen enemes that mght ndcate them as a menace to publc safety. o mercan women marred to German alen enemes have only tw ways of escapng beng also regstered as alen enemes to get a dvorce or to make your husband. THE MUI NEWS, FRIDY, JUNE 4, 98. NOTHER LND PROBLEM Secretary Lane s studyng Hawas land problems. It s not a smple problem but Secretary Lane s not a small calbre man. Hs nvestgatons, backed by hs clear foresght, may lead to great eventual eneft to the terrtory. There are many thngs connected wth the land stuaton n Ha wa that Mr. Lane doubtless wll be unable to remedy, but whch eserve attenton nevertheless. One of these s the dffculty of normal rowth of many towns n the Islands due to the fxed polcy of the sugar plantatons not to sell any of ther lands. Waluku s a strkng example of ths. The town has grown n Hernaton n the past few years greatly beyond ts capacty to properly house the people. Land for further expanson cannot be had. lthough ut a country town, people are lvng almost under tenement condtons f crowdng. The communty s chokng for room to expand. The prce of real estate not owned by the plantaton, equals that f Honolulu property. The assessed value of the cane felds mmed- - tely surroundng, or even wthn the town, s the pro rata assessment of c plantaton lands as a whole. The Waluku Sugar Company, whch owns practcally all of the and around the town, does from tme to tme release a few acres for uldng lots, but always upon an exchange bass for other sugar lands. Ths polcy s not the polcy of any one man or group of men. It s the generally polcy of the plantatons as a whole throughout the ter- - tory. It s based on the theory of keepng the basc assets of the anous companes ntact. It s doubtless a sound busness polcy un- -,....,,. - l. er our pecular condtons wncre ndvdual enterprse s aways scconu-r- y to corporate enterprse. To queston ths general polcy s to open the fundamental queston of whether or not the whole sugar ndustry f Hawa s lad on sound economc lnes. nd ths s a problem that annot be lghtly solved. But unless we are to accept as fact that an nsensble, man-mad- e nachne lke a corporaton, s greater than the people, we must take the land that publc welfare comes frst. nd when t comes to a xnt f whether land should be used for producng sugar or furnshng comfortable homes, there should be no queston. Secretary Lane can probably not deal wth ths stuaton snce t does not have to do wth the publc doman, but t s a problem that s begnnng to press for a soluton. o For the frst tme durng hs admnstraton Governor Pnkham has ublshed, as an advertsement, just what lands the terrtory has subject to homesteadng, and what lands wll be avalable n the future. The Governor also calls attenton to the fact that the organc act ecton relatve to publc lands s absolutely mandatory, of mmedate!fect, and cannot be devated from by the Presdent, the Secreary of the nteror, the Land Commssoner, the Land Board, the Governor, or the legslature". Of course there s nothng new n ths, snce the law has been n effect for a number of years, but judgng from the past atttude of the local admnstraton, the Governor must only just have dscovered lus Jace n the lst.. The advertsement appeared concdentally wth the arrval of Secretary Lane. o "The Prussans sought war and they shall have war untl the very thought of war shall have been made abhorrent n t ther mnds." Tourst travel and Natonal parks are bound up together. Not Matter Of Natonal Safety The Vglance Corps wll bo fortunate n the ssue f t keeps ts fngers out of the personal spat between Senator Castle and Speaker Holstn. It appears that the corps has been asked to nqure what the Speaker meant when he referred to the Senator as "clothed n glory and khak." nybody wth an ounce of sense knows precsely what he meant. He expressed a sentment so generally felt both among cvlans and offcers that t need not be examned too mnutely n prnt. In a moment of exasperaton he lad hs hand on the flnst weapon wthn grasp. It was not seemly n the Senator to call the House of Representatves an assembly of Bolshevk, but t would have been Just as well for the Speaker f be bad not felt called upon to mak a rersonal rejonder. On both sdes there was an error of taste and an error of judgment The ncdent s as small as t was unproftable. The Speaker meant nothng to the dscredt of the unform or of the Red Cross. He dd ntend to hurt the Senator n hs personal vanty, whch was a natural f not a partcularly worthy ambton. If he succeeded, what gratfcaton t afforded hm has probably been forgotten n the sequel. That was at a tme when there was serous talk that the "war sesson" should stck frmly to busness and hold expenses to the absolute mnmum. Lloyd sad nothng more about t. When the senate organzed, he was elected, notfed by telephone, and took up hs dutes. fter the sesson closed he receved a salary warrant for f240. He ndorsed the warrant over to the Red Cross, sent t to Red Cross headquarters and yesterday receved a note of cordal thanks. That was "Bert" Lloyds contrbuton. There was a good deal sad pror to the sesson about members gvng all or part of ther salares to the Red Cross. In some respects the sesson waas a dsappontment partcularly n respect to ts rato of wore accomplshed to tme spent, but an unostentatous act such. as that of Lloyds leaves at least one pleasant mpresson of the "war sesson" of 98. GRET PROMISE ND HOW IT MY BE FULFILLED By Rev. J. Charles Vllers (Church of the Good Shepherd) There s a promse of great achevement and hgh destny to Judah n the propheces of Isaah worthy of consderaton n our day and generaton. It s ths: "Thou shall call thy wals salvaton and thy gates prase". The walled rty Is hstorcally unknown n these Islands and n the country of whch (hey are an outpost. Here and there n England are ctes n whch there can be seen the relcs of the ancent walls and gates by whch these ctes were once enclosed. They are kept n good repar not for any present-da- servce, but as remnders of a long ago past. We have recently been remnded that the walled cty s not yet a thng of the past n the eastern world, by the takng of Jerusalem from the Turks by the Brtsh, under the General We have all read the wonderful story of the conquest of Jerusalem, and, probably, have seen pctures of General llenby and hs assocates passng through the gates, and under the walls of the Holy Cty welcomed wth rejocng by Jews, Chrstana, and Moslems alke. It was these very walls and gates that the prophet had n mnd when, he wrote the words: "Thou shalt call the walls salvaton and thy gates prase". But the people to whom he addressed these words were not dwellng wthn the confnes of the cty. For many years Judah had bee.n n captvty n Babylon, nured, and some of the people reconcled, to ther condton, wthout hope or thought of return to the motherland. Isaah encourages them to beleve such return possble, and urges them to prepare themselves for It by fathful adherence to the relgous and moral prncples of Judahs natonal lfe. Moral delnquency and sprtual poverty had been the cause of ther captvty. Had they Deen fathful to ther Ugh relgous prvl eges and oblgatons they would have had a dfferent hstory. They had lacked natonal power n a crtcal moment because they had lacked In hgh prncple at that moment. They would have new opportunty, and the best preparaton they could make for t was to get rght wth Uoa Dy wan lng n Hs ways. "Let the wcked forsake hs way, and the unrghteous man hs thoughts, and let hm return unto the Lord, for He wll have mercy, and to God, for he wll abundantly pardon. The orophet s message s a promse. but t s a promse wth a condton; a promse of what shall be the effect of natonal adherence to tne lunaamental prncples of relgon and rghteousness. Wthout such adher party of sportsmen, dscples of Iaah Walton came over from Honolulu on Monday to Kahoolawe. Off Kahoolawe they caught about eght hundred pounds of fsh, but the eccentrc on the crculatng pump of ther launch engne broke. They made a jury rg wth a barrel and poured water In It all nght untl they reached Lahana on Tuesday mornng. There It was repared by Mr. Sleeper of the Lahanaluna School. They le Lahana about three oclock on Tuesday ment Gross lvng, socal nerta ence the promse can have no fulfl afternoon expectng to flsh on the way materalsm, and oblvon to the fner to Honolulu. thngs of natonal lfe wll make the promse The naton that rejects, and derdes the law of rghteousness wll, ultmately, pay the penalty of It n natonal OeDasement. I read few days ago a ornan essay, by a brllant wrter. He ponts out that the tendency or modern cvl zaton s for t to be the slave rathe than the master of Its own nventons The amazng conquests of orgnal and appled scence, he says, n effect of the present age have croweded one another so fast that we have not haa tme to dgest and assmlate them, wth the result that many of the whch ought to have been a boon to human duce them, leavng ourselves but lttle tme to lve and enjoy lfe. We have been, as ths wrter puts t, "Gaderen- - Ing" rushng down the hgh clff nto the sea, possessed by the devls of machnery. "We were rattlng In to a new speces of barbarty when the war came, and may, perhaps, contnue to rattle when t s over." I say, "God forbd". He does forbd. But where are we to fnd the humlty, and the moral courage, to heed and obey Hm; to walk n the sprt of "Salvaton", and Tralse" The wrter who depcts so well the Ills of mo dern cvlzaton says that "Educa ton" s the remedy for them. But let t not be forgotten that the cvlzed world was never as generally, broadly, and well educated as t s today. Never was there a tme n the past, when the plan and common people of every cvlzed naton had such unversal opportunty of educaton as they now have. Not only s the common school open to them, hut n most countres,f not all, the unversty, the scentfc and professonal school s also open to them, f not free, certanly on very easy terms. nd never. In all the past, dd so many aval themselves of ths opportunty. nd t Is well that t Is so. for, of course, educaton cannot be too wdely dffused. But. after we have acknow ledged that fact, we have stll to reckon wth another one. nd that s, that the world has, perhaps, no greater menace than t has n the educated schemer and vllan who takes advantage and explots the great multtude of people who have less worldly wsdom and Baacty than he has. The present war s a deplorable example of ths. Educaton may be a blessng, and a unversal blessng. To make t such, however, It must have ts soul, as ts nner lfe, the lfe of relgon. I do not mean rere ecclesastlelsm or sectar an relgon, but vtal relgon, the re- - gon whch s the bass of the Chrst anty of Jesus Chrst. Relgon says the wrter I have quoted "as a motve force s at once too personal, too specalzed to drect deals, and control the educatonal needs of a modern state", because "It s essentally emotonal, and ndvdual, and when It becomes practcal and world ly, strays outsde ts true provnce, and loses all force". That s a very narrow concepton of relgon, but t s a concepton all too common. Relgon, properly defned, and Interpreted n lfe, has a functon far beyond thngs "essentally emotonal"; or of Indvdual fancy and nclnaton. It has relaton to, and concerns tself wth questons of State, wth the conduct of natons, wth poltcs, both socal and economc, ncludng even questons of tarff. It has relaton to nternatonal affars, such, for.nstance, as the sgnng of nternatonal treates, a relaton that wll not allow such treates to be regarded as "scraps of paper" whch may be set nought, wth mpunty. Whle there Is a wrong n the world that needs rghtng, a dark place n the earth that needs the lght of Heaven, a place where njustce, or moral dsorder obtans, there s need of the hgh and holy prncples of the Chrstan relgon. Only the truth as t s n Jesus can free the world from bondage. Next to a letter from home, a solder apprecates most of all a home paper. Gve YOUR solder boy a subscrpton to the MUI NEWS $2.50 a year.
