After the outsde layer wore taken away a great deal of soft, unsatsfactory stono was found on the nteror of tho hll. Tho fallng oft of ths closest sourco of supply s slowng up the work. t s necessary to dg more to get tho stones and the large cap stones aro not much n evldonce as they once woro. Rock wll have to bo obtaned from the further rdges, makng more track and a longer haul necessary. How long t wll take to complete ths work s not known. t wll d very largely upon tho ease of gettng the rock. And when tho breakwater s all fnshed, the problem of facltatng Kauas shppng by the use of t wll have been only started. The puttng up of wharves and tho dredgng of the harbor wll be work of great magntude. The dredgng of the harbor wll requlro from one half mllon to one mllon dollars, after tho breakwater s all completed. Ths money wll have to bo approprated by congress and so far there has been no acton taken on t. There s no appropraton yet for the prelmnary surveys for tbe dredgng or for the erecton of the wharves. The work of erectng tho breakwater s beng done by the U. S. Engneers. But the work of dredng tho harbor and the erecton of the wharves wll come under the terrtoral board of harbor commlsloners. TO MPROVE LHUE ARMORY S PLAN OF KAUA LEGON Kaua Post No. 2 of the Amercan Legon held ther regular monthly meetng at the court house on Saturday evenng. After the regular routne of busness the recommendaton of the athletc commttee to start a campagn to rase the root of tho Llhuo armory so that the buldng may really be used as a cotumuty center, wqs acted upon. t was decded that the post should get behnd the plan to tho full ex- - tont of ts powers and carry the project thru to success. The deft nlte plan for fnancng the project has not been completed, but mdm bers of tho post ure workng out the detals. The plans for mprovng the buld ng call for tbe olnnaton of tho cefutcr row of posts and the sub uttutlon of ono complete truss n stead of two as s used to support the roof at present. Tho present armory has two 30 foot trusses wth a 2 foot heght to the rafters. Tho now plan calls for one. GO foot truss and about a 25 foot cellng at least. Ths would gve Kaua a communl ty center second to nouo n tho slands, as t would havo a floor 60 by 00 and could bo used for any 3 ndoor sport gvng a maxmum of pla"lng space for any ndoor gamo, Those who played or attended tho ndoor baseball games last wnter wll recall that the players wore handcapped by the ball contnually httng tho rafters and that the p!uy lng space was cut down duo to tho center row of posts. Basketball players wero also handcapped duo to tho sumo reasons. Tho post wll announco n a short tlmo ts defnte plans n regard to fnancng the proposton and thoro jf s no doubt that the Legon wll carry tlo project thru to a successful concluson, as tho Legon hns yet to make a falure of anythng they have undertaken. An unexpected request camo from Oh pageant commltteo of tho Orental dance for tho party that took tho pllows that graced the queens throno, to kndly return tho sumo, as tho ownor was kckng. All tho post amateur sleuths are workng on the case, Auto Club Holds Successful Run The ntal outng of tho Kaua Automoble Club was a sgnal success, whch outran oven tho most confdent expectatons of ts promoters. They Gather n From Far and Near n accordance wth tho program, carloads of happy outers from all sectons of the sland began to roll nto Hanale about 0 oclock, and camo thck and fast, and.n buch numbers that fnally parkng apnea was at a premum. de,al Hosts Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Sanborn plac ed ther beach house nt tho dsposnl of the party, whch was a very wel-com- o convenence, and thoy themselves made most genal and kndly hosts. Hanale at ts Best Tho day was phenomenally beau tful, and Hanale was at ts best. The sea was most nvtng, wth qute enough surf runnng to glvo zp and zest to tho swmmng and t soon became.ovdont that there was plenty of both, oven close nshore, whle farthor out there was qulto of splco of danger..most of the young people, and some who wero not so young, went n, whllo there was a good szed old folks row lned up on tho beach to enjoy t as spectators. On to Hanale, and the Beautes on the Way Rather retcently thoy heard tho call of tho outng leader, "All aboard for lunch at Haenn!" The trp thther along the coast, overlookng tho tumblng waves and rock-boun- d reefs and sandy reaches below, s one of the fnest that can bo seen n Hawa, or, ndeed, anywhere else, and was at ts very best on ths occason. A Romantc Spot for Lunch The Dry Cave of Manlnlhola was the selected spot for luch, and proved a most delghtful place for that purpose. t s n front of tho great cave, wth ts dark and cavernous depths, and under the fne grove of kukul trees, whch have grown up there, wth the precptous beetlng clffs overhead, and glmpses of the blue sea out through the trees. There s plenty room there for the largest outng party that wll ever lunch there, but t could be very much mproved by clearng off loose rock. The crowd broke up nto groups accordng to affnty and lunch arrangement and devoted themselves very assduously to tho toothsome vands they had brought, for the space of half an hour or so. An Old Hawaan Story They were then rounded up to ono central pont, and Mr. Lydgato gave, them a Hawaan story about the three outstandng rocks near by, whch were ancent dem-god- Pohakuloa nnd Kauwa, who swam n one nght, all tho way from Kahlkl, n the South Seas, bound forwalalenle. but who wero overtaken, just as thoy landed, by tho breakng day, and Hko Lots wfe of old, wero turned to stono. To the Wet Caves Tho next number on the program was tho Wet Caves at Kanaloa and Waakapala, a couple of mles or so farthor along and beyond tho reach of automobles. A goodly number, some 25 or 30, lned up under tle leadershp of tho Heloloa leader, (Contnued on Pago Sx) TWENTY-FFT- ANNVERSARY Lhue Unon church wll celebrato tho 25th annversary of Englsh speakng serrces next Sunday mornng at oclock. Posonng Wpes Out Entre Japanese Famly An entre Jnprfceso famly was wped out last week n Puhl camp thru a form of posonng called botulsm, whch thoy contracted from eatng- from salmon eggs that wore preserved, n a fashon pecular to tho Uapaneso, accordng to authortes that aro nvestgatng tho case. The dead nro Mntsujlra Shlbuya. aged 40, the father of tho famly, Suye Shlbuya aged 28, tho mother and Kolch, aged 5, nnd Makoto aged 3, the two sons. The salmon eggs woro purchased at a local storo on tho 2st of tho mouth. None woro eaten however untl tho 24th when they woro partaken of freely by tho father nnd the two sons. The mother took a lttle or none of the eggs but ate some food out of a lunch tn that had had tho salmon eggs n t. Shlbuya went to work as usual that mornng but was taken ll n the felds about n. n. He left hs work and spent tho day at a frends house, returnng to hs own home that evenng. Dr. Kuhns was called on Wednosdny mornng to treat the sck man. Ths form of posonng s extremely vrulent and though heroc measures were used by Dr. Kuhns and hs assstants, Shlbuya dlod the followng evenng at about :30. Kolch, tho older boy was strcken at about a. m. on Tuesday mornng and faled very rnpdly, dyng at G p. m. that same evenng. The younger boy, Makoto, was taken ll at about the same tme but lved untl the next evenng about S oclock. The mother was taken to the Lhue hosptal on Wednesday where she lngered untl Saturday mornng. Although several other partes had purchased salmon eggs from tho very same tub that tho Shlbuya famly had bought thers, there has been no report of anyone sufferng from any llness that carres symptoms pecular to botulsm. A specmen of the salmon eggs were sent to tho terrtoral laboratores n Honolulu nnd t was frst announced that the salmon eggs were negatve, but the next day a wro came to dsregard tho frst report as a gunea pg that had..been lnnoculatcd had ded wthn 24 hours. Mr. Cook, the terrtoral board of health nspector had confscated the tub of eggs just as soon as- - t was suspected of beng tho cause of the tragedy, to prevent any further spread of the posonng. Botulsm s an acute posonng that s caused by the acton of a form of bactera. Tho nfecton s sad to bo an accdental happenng, that mght occur to any canned or preserved goods. t wll be remembered that tho country was startled a few years ago by a wholesale posonng whch was a form of botulsm and t was fnally traced down to a brand of canned olves. Authortes aro carefully watchng all those thnt are suspected of beng n danger of any posonng from havng eateh the contamnated salmon eggs. P. Schultz, deputy terrtoral food commssoner, arrved ths mornng to conduct tho nvestgaton. Accordng to Mr. Schultz ths. s tho frst caso on record of botulsm n the terrtory. MOKHANA CLUB TO HAVE.j. Kaua Bank Forced nto Recevers Hands Last Week Followng a somewhat stormy and checkered nrwc of about two years duratlnn, the Kaua branch of tho Hawa Bank of Commerce, formerly the Bank or Kam!, closed ts doors Thusday mornng. And t closed then so hard nnd tght that the bang caused ts mother nsttuton n Hono ulu to shut up shop too. Tho Bank of Knpna was founded by tho people who so unsuccessfully guded tho afalrs of.he Peoples Bank or Hllo. Somowhat over two years ago, Herbert Tnmlow, then casher of tho Peoples.cnk Fred lattorson, formerly of Kaua, nnd Senator James Russell, nlso connected wth the bank and wth the Securty Trust Co., vsted the Garden sland to nterest local captal n a now bank on ths sland. A good many men, mostly thoso wth snmowhnt lmted captal, bought stock n the enterprse. A number of others who had consd ered tho proposton balked when they found that the control of the place would really bo n Hllo, not n tho hands of local busness men. The nsttuton was started under favorable auspces. t was tho tme of hgh sugar and hgh bonuses. Tho frst hundred thousand dollars deposts was leached n a remarkably short tme. Busness seemed to be very flourshng nnd the bank, as many other nsttutons tho country over, expanded quckly. t erected ts own buldng. Soon t also put up a buldng for a drug store, a clothng storo and a doctors offce. Tho bank advanced consderable monoy for tho furnshng of the varous stores. t was not very long untl tho clothng storo proved a losng proposton. The propretor left and tho bank held tho bag. Tho drug store managed to keep gong for a much longer tme. Tho propretor loft Kaua only a few months ago to work n ono of tho Honolulu drug stores. But ho left a clerk n charge and attempted to keep tho store open. But, t too, was forced to close ts doors a few weeks ago and agan tho bank was somewhat "polo." At tho tlmo of tho openng of tho Hawa Bank of Commerce about three and a half months ngo, tho Kaua bank was turned over to that nsttuton. Tho Peoples Bank of Hlo s sad to have sold ts nterest n tho local nsttuton to tho lnwa Bank of Commerce at par. But thoro wero a good many loans that could not bo collected. The value of tho bank property and of other buldngs erected had decdedly deprecated. Altogether n loss of about 40,000 was sustaned by tho Honolulu nsttuton n takng ovor tho Kaua bank. Tho loss caused s tho greatest cause of tho closng of the Hawa Bank of Commerce and the Com mercal Trust Co., accordng to Del- - bort E. Metzger, presdent and manager. But thoro aro hopes for a reorganzaton as tho assets of tho companes, are sad to bo about $75,-00-0 n excess of tho labltes. Tho Watorhouso Trust Co.. has been nppolnted as tho recever for tho two nsttutons and for the Kaua branch of tho bank. Whle thero s a possblty ot a reopenng ot all nsttutons, tho straghtenng out of the affars wll take somo tlmo and t s not a certanty that thoy wll bo permtted to reopen. But tho excess assets ar6 a farly certan guarantee that tho depostors of tho banks wll receve all ther money back nt somo future date. Tho frst casher ot tho Bank of Kaua was Karl B. Morgan, tho second Walter V. Loe. The casher of tho bank aftor t was made n branch or tho Hawa Bank of Commerce was K. M, Ahann. Tho drectors of tho Hawa Bank of Commerce nro J. E. Rce,. A. Asch. D. 4 TH E KENNETH C. UOTEU TUESDAY GARDEN ssued Every Tuesday COTTAGES AT VVVKAPELE There s now, am there las been fop some tme past, a groat need at luukapele am KoUee for some sort of publc cottages. One of the fnest park and camp stes n the terrtory s located tlcre. Hut there s no place for anyone, except those favored few who own cottages, to stay. Under the present coudtoss t s necessary for the people to go to Kokee and return n the same day. A few have carred tents along and have camped n them. But that, at host, s a dffcult and unsatsfactory thng to do.... Moragno made a suggeston the other day, that would n a" measure, solve Mot-agusays the thng to do s for the county super- the housng problem up there. Mr. Ma-kawevsors to donate the school cottages at l to the park. A fne bg school s just beng completed at Makawel. There are a number of cottages, almost a dozen, at the old school grounds. Some of these wll be moved to the new ste. Others wll not be moved because there s no need for them. t would be a fne thng f the county of Kaua would donate those surplus cottages to the ruukapole park and move them up here. Then there would be some place for people to go and stay when they wanted more than a days mountan ar. luukapele s one of Kauas best scenc assets. But heretofore, we have not cashed n on that asset as we could or should. We can get much more pleasure and we can draw more toursts to our sland f we wll judcously use the natural scenc resources whch we have. We can advantageously put a caretaker and wfe n charge of that park. He could look after the park, polce t, and keep t n condton. There are tmes n the summer when the grass s so dry that one match carelessly thrown away would set the whole country on fre f there was no one there to watch t and stop t. The caretaker could keep a lttle supply store and sell provsons to campers up there. All ths would add greatly to the place. Ths s a good tme for the county to take steps to greatly mprove luukapele. Wth mprovement n the roads more people can easly get up the mountans. Lets make t possble for them to stay and enjoy themselves after they get there. 7 ARE SUCCESSFUL MERCHANTS Successful merchants are constant advertsers. They buy goods to sell, not to keep constantly on hand as some of the old style advertsements were worded; but to turn over as quckly as possble that they may buy fresh goods, up to date and snappy, and once they have placed them on ther counters am shelves they nform the publc through the local papers, that such merchandse has arrved for publc nspecton. to Keep posted f you want to be n lne purchase tn; rght goods at the rght prce, s a maxm that all should heed, and the local paper s the bulletn that keeps you n touch wth your communty nterests, f the merchant fals to make an announcement of the knd, qualty and prce of hs wares that s hs fault; but read your local paper, news, advertsements am all, and you wll have a workng knowledge valuable to you. Do not send your money out of town when you can get what you need nt home, encourage your local merchants to keep you posted, for t s as much to ther nterest as yours that they do so. Your nterest s communty nterest. The only tme when no news s good news to the average ctzen s when he fals to hear from the tax assessor. We understand that the Russan sovet government has changed ts motto from "Let me also speak," to "Let me also eat." Ths world s so full of all knds of people but not one who hasnt hs own favorte cure for rheumatsm. The most consolng feature most people get out of the new ncome tax blank s that the last one appeared to get by alrght. Edson has just celebrated hs T.h brthday. He cant nvent anythng to keep the years from plng up. We found a man yesterday who was t to buy a cold cure that wasnt us the old relable." THE GARDEN SLAND, TUESDAY, MAY 2, 922 SLAND Managng Edtor MAY 2, 22 HOG CHOLERA t n spte of the fact that the board of agrculture and forestry mantans there s no hog cholera n Hawa, there are many hogs dyng of some dsease that looks and acts lke cholera. And t s becomng a very evdent fact that these hogs are just as dead as those that de wth bona fde cholera. On ths sland at present some plantatons are nnoculatug ther hogs for cholera. The cost s hgh, so hgh t s sad as to be almost prohbtve to many of the smaller hog owners. And yet wthout the nnocula-to- n death s certan. Some hog men predct that the dsease wll not run ts course untl all the hogs on the sland are klled off by t. - We dont pretend to say whether ths dsease s cholera or hemorrhagc septcema. But we do say that whatever t s, t s kllng far too many hogs and that the proper authortes should recognze the fact and take certan steps to stop t. These dseases are beng successfully combatted all over the manland of the Unted states and there s no reason why they cannot be here. WHAT S THRFT? n the average mans nnd, thrft means savng money. n theory that s thrft, but n practce t may be the reverse. For thrft means gettng the most for your money by nvestng t n thngs for whch there s a present use or future proft. Puttng a padlock on the pocket s not thrft. Thats stngness. f one can buy a lot worth $300 for?200, t s thrft to buy t. f a sut of clothes whch wll be needed next fall can be bought now for $20 when t wll cost $30 when next fall arrves, then t wll be thrft to buy t. Thrft s takng advantage of opportuntes n whch there s a proft. t means keepng your dollars everlastngly on the job. Thrft also means refranng from useless expendtures that keep the pocket book so thn that nvestments cannot be taken advantage of when they are offered. Thngs should be purchased from the standpont of use and proft, am f there s no present use aud no future proft n sght, dont buy. No matter what your defnton of thrft may be, when t s carefully studed and analyzed and boled down, t smply means gettng ready for a bg opportunty, and hopng t wll come. And gettng ready for the bg opportunty s just another defnton of layng away for the rany day. Dont hde or dsspate your savngs. nvest them. There are so many fne opportuntes open rght now, and rght around here, that no man, who cares about the future, can afford to neglect them or close hs eyes to them. The man who spends hs tme sttng on a nal keg at the grocery ranks as a producer along wth the hen that sts on o door knob, except that the hen s honest n her ntentons. The man who takes no nterest n town mprovements s stealng a rde on the charot of progress. Love at frst sght may be alrght, but the wse man always takes a second look. t takes two to make a quarrel, the mnster, to make t permanent. 5 THE GARDEN SLAND, TUESDAY, MAY 2, SPORTS- BASEBALL Next Sunday wll see the Kaua Athletc Assocaton off to Us annual race for the pennant. Ths years race looks as though t wll be the best n hstory as all the teams that fnshed below Makee, last years champs, are strengthened and should gve the champs a battle for t ths year. McBryde, the runner-u- last year, p added Tank Ohama, the best catcher n the league, to ther lne-u- and p Wth Tlly as a battery mate, they have easly the best battery n the league. The rest of the McBryde lne-u- wll be practcally the same as last year. Ako wll play frst, Spaldng second, Watase short, and Kamaka thrd. The outfeld wll consst of Perrlera n left, Sally Watase n center, and Noboto or Proute n rght. The man strength of the Mc- Bryde team wll le n ts battery and httng strength. Wth Tlly and Tank workng rght they are gong to gve the opposton an awful battle. f Tlly cannot Btop them from gettng on the bases they are gong to have qute a job movng along, for woe betde the baserunner that tres to steal on Tank. He certanly carres a gun and t s sure death to try and steal off hm. Tlly has corralled a bunch of htters and they should be able to tew runs, per game. Makawel la an unknown quantl ty, but Tlly reports after the Makawel McBryde game, that they have a bunch of htters that are gong to worry every ptcher n the league before the season s over.. There are sx left handed batters. on the team and as there are no left handed ptchers n the league they should have everythng ther own way. One bad feature of the team s that they wll have a left handed catcher and left short-stophanded,. Wth all these left handers there s one dsadvantage, they are lable to start thnkng left handed, whch would be a calamty on any baseball club. Koloa expects. to mprove ther team over last year, but owng to the loss of Robelo they wll be weak n the box, but hopes that the Costa boys, who wll do the twrlng, wll delver. Gabrel, who caught for McBryde last year, wll do the bulk of the recevng; Ray Alameda wll play. frst; Schmmelphenng second; Bush, short, and keda thrd. Wala-leale-, Lovell and Kondo wll play outfeld. Joe Ornellaa wll manage the team and may step n wth an occasonal pnch ht as Joe s a veteran at the game and used to weld a wcked bludgeon when he dd perform. HANAMAULU WNS THE CHAMPONSHP Hanamaulu cnched the ttle n the faue junor league by defeatng the Sunrse, Sunday, at the Llhue damond by the score of 9 to 3. The Sunrse were out to wn as they had mported the Hronaka brothers from Keala as a battery to help them wn, but even wth an mported battery the Sunrse were VOLLEYBALL Saturday, the fnals n the Kaua. The Kekaha boys outplayed ther largeropponents at all stages of the game, wnnng handly. NOTCE There wll be an mportant meetng of the Kaua Athletc Assocaton at the Llhue Court House next Thursday evenng, May 4th, for the purpose of settlng the status of o and for the purpose of choosng unform ball for all league games. All drectors are urged to be present, as both these ssues are of utmost mportance to the league. not equal to the occason. Hronaka cannot be blamed for losng the battle as he ptched farly good ball, but hs support was very ragged n the pnches. Hanamaulu certanly surprsed when they won the second seres, as they were the talenders n the frst round, never wnnng a game. n the second round they managed to defeat every team but the Sunrse and then they took a brace and defeated them n the play-of- f Sunday.
