However there were always some others whch looked just lke hm, so that was al most ns good. There was u farm close to where we stayed, where there was a real water wheel, used for grndng gran and was certanly very nterestng to watch the water fallng on the wheel and turnng t around and round. Ths water was so cold and clear that sometmes we used, when the wheel was not turnng, to le on the bank of the lttle stream and drnk t. Ths was easy enough when the stream was hgh, but not qute as easy when the wheel had been runnng, and one day one of my ssters fell n and got a good duckng. Then there were wonderful ferns to be had n the wood, and on the banks of the streams, much the same as n most oth er countres, but somehow they looked more glossy and a darker green than any remember see ug elsewhere. Another thng whch grew very plentfully was the wld rose, just a smple fve-petaled pnk flower whch everyone regarded as a weed, yet t was from ths flower that all the hundreds, and there are now lterally hundreds of dfferent varetes of - roses to be had, orgnally sprang. There were two other flowers whch remember of partcularly well, as they usually grew, a bush each on ether sde of the lav-enda- r, cottage doors. These were and the perfume they gave out was somethng very wonderful, so cool and swee and somehow qute dfferent to the scent from even the most rure flowers. OCTOBER 25, 92 ARE AUTOMOBLES COSTLY f Whle the automoble has come to stay as an economc necessty, t s one of the most costly methods of transporaton ever ntroduced to the world, uuless t may be the arplane, whch s yet undeveloped to the pont where t can be called practcal. n the year!)20 automoble accdents caused the death of 2,000 persons and njured,500,000 exclusve of mnor njures of nsuffcent mportance to be reported offcally. The economc loss as a result of these njures s estmated at more than a bllon dollars. The nsurance companes of the Unted States pad n death clams durng!)20 the sum of!?4.500,000 on account of automoble accdents, the great majorty of whch were preventable and due to carelessness, recklessness and nexperenced drvers. t does not pay to take chances when drvng an automoble; but the foolkller s everywhere present ; hence the lst of accdents rolls up daly and weekly, monthly and yearly, and pedestrans, careful drvers and those who venture nto the streets wth horse am buggy are menaced by the thoughtless and heedless drver of an automoble. Every hour may be seen n any communty volatons of the laws regulatng speed lmts, the carryng of lghts and the varous other precautons that are necessary to nsure the safety of the publc. Drve out n an automoble any day and yon wll soon be mpressed wth the carelessness of auto drvers and wonder that the number of accdents s not larger. You are exposed to the heedless drver, the fast drver, the nexperenced drver and the wl- -. ful drver, who takes a chance at anythng, regardless of consequences. "Safety Frst" should be nstlled nto the mnd of every autost. The man who wll take a chance should be refused a lcense. The autost who perssts n cuttng n ahead of persons crossng a street ntersecton should be jaled as unft for human socety, especally the socety of the road. "Have a care and respect the rghts of your fellow man," should be nstlled nto the brans of hundreds who make the roads dangerous. XEAR QUTTXG TME? A Washngton report says that our chemcal warfare servce has dscovered a poson so deadly that three drops on a mans skn wll cause death. n war tme ths delghtful flud would be sprayed over hostle troops by aeroplanes equpped wth nozzles. t s sad that four thousand tons of t so used would wpe wpe out an army of a mllon men. Ths poson gas probably would ft nto the plans of a Brtsh expert on tanks who wrtes that n the next war tanks carryng tons of lqud gas wll "cross the fronter and oblterate every lvng thng n the felds and farms, the vllages, and ctes of the enemys country. Meanwhle aeroplanes wll attack the ndustral centers." He adds that these attacks wll be made "not aganst the enemys army, but aganst the cv l populaton." We wonder f the war god, growng more deadly wth each weapon suppled to hm by scence, wll not end by kllng hmself? The sword and the lance were the weapons of romance. Then came the muske the "seventy fve" all of them wth certan colorful and pcturesque qualtes. The solder went nto war cheerfully, glad of hs part n a great adventure. But c;scrpt a man to go out to be posoned, or to poson enemy cvlans, and he wll see no romance n war. nstead of an adventurer he has become the subject or the mplement of a laboratory experment. Confronted by crcumstance such as these, these men of all natons are lkely to try hard tt fnd some peaceful means of settlng ther natonal dsputes before facng and dealng terrble and unnsprng deaths. f ths s to le the war of the future the normal man wll envy Murk Twans "Connectcut Yankee" and hs one way tcket nto the dstant past. Doubtless the human ronclads of the Mddle Ages had ther unpleasant trats, but most of us would rather take a chance aganst one of them than face the modern chemst solder equpped wta a test tube of poson and an upleasatt dspon lon.
