She nbbled at the leaves "We wll not eat much" sad Dear Deer. "We want just enough to last n rata us untl we get to our regular feedng place where we are sure to fnd plenty of food beneath the snow and lots of tender shrubs on whch to browse." HopptyHo twtched hs whskers and scratched hs head. " dont want you to go hungry" he sad to Brave Buck and Dear Deer. "And f you wll promse not to eat everythng n the Peppermnt Shop wll take you there." Dear Deer and Brave Buck quckly promsed so HopptyHo Rabbt hopped on ahead and Jack and Janet and HpptyHo Rabbt hopped on after hm. Soon they came to a rpplng stream where the current ran so fast over the rocks the water could not freeze. At the edge of ths stream were bubblng sprngs and around these sprngs were green plants. CHAPTER The Peppermnt Shop looked ptyngly at Urave "Here we are at the Peppermnt Shop JANET and Dear Deer. She vas Here you wll fnd your sweet lolpop sorry for any one who was hungry. At the nstant he tasted the leaf Jack began to eat as eager ly as HopptyHo p and HpptyHop. And no wonder for the leaves were peppermnt leaves as sweet to hs BG rabbt tongue as the sweetest peppermnt candy he had ever eaten. "Where s the berry or two to go on top?" asked Jack. " HopptyHo p scratched away the snow and there were tender delcous wntergreen berres. Brave Buck and Dear Deer ate also but they were true to ther promse and they dd not eat very much. They munched just enough of the green peppermnt leaves and the red wntergreen berres to gve them a fne appette and then they began to browse on nearby bushes. JOSEPH H. GRAY FRDAY : HUMANE WEEK EDTOR APRL s Vw pelson wll admt that they are nherently cruel am take delght n causng suffe rngs to others or to helpless annuals and brds. Hut then1 are many who are careless or thoughtless aud t s the purpose of humane week to reach some of such persons to; make them care a lttle and to thnk somewhat of weak and helpless chldren and of brds and anmals. One may shower care aud attenton on a pet anmal anl yet thoughtlessly make a shpment of fowls or anmals n such a way that the brds or beasts suffer for hours perhaps for days. A man who Mould lght f some one kcked hs dog may maltreat a horse or a mule. n one nstance he cares n the other he s careless even to brutalty. Often t s sad that there s not the need of humane socetes now that there was a few years ago when the horse was as common on the streets and roads as s the automoble today. t s true there are fewer horses overworked and underfed overloaded and beaten and abused now than formerly snce there arc fewer used but ths fact docs not elmnate the need of humane workers and socetes now they may turn ther efforts nto other lnes of endeavor and n other drectons. n Hawa ths has resulted n efforts to amelorate the condtons that have surrounded the shpment of cattle swne and fowls. n the schools les a fertle feld for work. The doctrne of kndness to the weak and helpless nstlled there wll bear fruts later le who s knd to anmals s generally knd to chldren as well and he who lets fondness for lttle folk well up n hs heart has a more kndly feelng for all humanty for the weak and the helpless he may meet. So t s that humaneness drected frst dumb creatures grows nto kndness and care for all humanty. But t s not only 1o ameloratng the condton of dumb anmals that humane work s drected. Most mportant of ts endeavors s the relevng of chldren from pan and sufferng ameloratng ll condtons surroundng them wth better mprovng the moral atmosphere n whch they lve and breath. The wrter has seen the pcture of a chld twsted and crooked and a later photograph whch shows hm strong and straght. Ths Mas accomplshed through the assstance of the Humane Department of the Womans Club here. The comng week s a tme for each to pause and thnk to do an occasonal kndness to sonc dumb creature or lttle chld. Such a start may brng habt for one Mll be surprsed at how much happness he can brng to hmself how much satsfacton wll come to hm even from occasonal acts of such nature. THE CURFEW LAW Approaches have been made to Sherff dwell askng a strct enforcement of the Curfew Law on Mau such as has been undertaken n Honolulu and has been urged at Hlo. The subject has been brought up before the Mau Womans Club and s under consderaton of the Humane Department of that organzaton. Chefly complants as to chldren beng out late nto the evenngs have come from Waluku whch s natural as there are more crowded housng condtons and more to attract the attenton of the youngsters. Mau News s told by a member of the Humane Department that there s lttle complant heard and lttle cause for complant n the vcnty of the plantatons or the canneres. As a matter of fact the man cause of crtcsm of condtons has been found on Market street Waluku. Attendance at pcture shows s not objected to by those back of the movement so much as the gatherng of chldren outsde the pcture houses of those who have not the prce of admsson but lnger eagerly just outsde nght after nght. They may go n once a week perhaps but they have not the money for nghtly attendance yet stll are attracted to the doors whence they wander back and forth through the streets. Man s a gregarous anmal and he s only a chld of a larger growth. Just how young the "gang sprt" starts t s hard to tell but when very young there appears the nclnaton to "follow the crowd" that s seldom ever outgrown to "go where they all go." Tho Boy Scouts and the Grl Scouts have taken advantage of gregarousness the "gang sprt" and have made and are makng t a source of beneft and usefulness nstead of harm as t formerly was. Each troop s only a "gang" wth actvtes drected rghtly nstead of wrongly n socal nstead of unsocal drectons. t s probable that much of the street wanderng of chldren at nght as well as by day comes from unattractveness of the homes the greater attractveness of other places. That s an old old problem n the towns as well as n the ctes. A curfew law mav send such chldren reluctantly scamperng homeward and to bed but they go under the compulson of the law. t s the parents more than! the chldren who should be blamed for the condtons that exst and they may not have the knowledge or ablty to keep ther off! sprng wth them. t s wth tho parents then that the law en! forcement suggested should have the most nfluence. f they had to accompany a chld to court once or twce to explan to leave work or busness to do so they Mould lkely see that the chld was at home evenngs thereafter. n that May law enforcement would be! benefcal. Lack of attractveness at home s shown by the number of chldren who vst the Lbrary readng room evenngs and stay tll closng tme. Occasonally some of hen are so weared that they go! to sleep over a book or magazne and have to be awakened andsent homo. f they are to be out they codd hardly be h a better place. They have merely sought surroundngs that please them and they ndulge ther sense of pleasure at the cost of health and growth and strength n later lfe. n most nstances there s nothng wrong n youngsters seekng the streets. Here n Hawa perpetual summer leads to the tendency of spendng as much tme as possble out of doors. But t must be admtted that street lfe away from restranng and governng nfluences s not good for the young. They are more apt to fall n wth evl assocatons there than elsewhere. Yet the problem s to make the chldren see ths and to exercse restrant where necessary n tme. To that end t may be enforcement of the Curfew Law that s needed. The slang word of today s lkely to be accepted n "good" language of tomorrow. anna Many a busness man whle wshng hs customers no harm wshes they would cough up. a at a a f the "self made" man who thanks only hmself for hs start s not careful he can thank hs wfe for hs "fnsh." Dame Fortune s the one woman who n bestowng smles s not. n 1 fluenced by a handsome face. No one ever dd and no one ever wll pet the spce out of lfe untl he puts some pep nto t. Wllam Jennngs Bryan s quoted as sayng that the "world s gong to "dry up." n all kndness t may be suggested that he set the world an example. t s remarked that a mere sucker can locate a swndler when the most sklled detectves are baffled. Theres an opportunty for lots of poor suckers on the New York plan clothes force f the asserton be carred to a logcal concluson. n Wall street the lambs are the goats. n Arzona the goats are served as mutton. Turn about s far play. t has been suggested that all scandal should be made publc. Theres not room enough n the newspapers and the shortage of news prnt would become accentuated even f the lbel laws could be amended. Some persons clam to be supporters of the communty when n realty they are only holdng t up. t would seem that f Conan Doyle and other sprtsts really want nformaton as to the dsemboded the tme to get t would be before dsembodment. f there s a sprt whch perssts after death t must exst n lfe and should be more e at that tme. f a scrap of paper started the world wax a flood of paper has followed t. t looks as f Sherff Rose had determned to make the Desha Bathng Sut Law so unpopular n Honolulu that t can be repealed at the next legslatve sesson. Theres a chance for the outsde slands legslators to make ther bargans. "Gve us what we want or keep your coats on." Honolulu polcemen are reported to have taken the Desha Law onto the beach at Wakk. The general mpresson has been hat t appled only to streets and alleys and that the bather could dscard the superfluous coverng after reachng the beach. f sun baths are to be taken only n robes and mackntoshes the remanng popularty of the much sung of strand wll stll further wane. Russa and Germany the two outlaws of Europe got together at Genoa just as mght have been expected they would. Workng whle the others drowsed they secured results for themselves rght at the jump but the results may not be all that they hope for. As remarked before t appears to be just as well the Unted States dd not send a delegaton to Genoa. n Honolulu the county offcals arc beggng that the assessed valuaton be not cut down and the tax payers are equally nsstent for the cut. The money pad by the taxpayers s supposed to come back to them n government but the tax payers are not n the market to buy more at present prces. Lettng of the contract for work on the KuahaKak road p s good news for the pneapple ndustry of Mau. t s takng long chances to grow pnes n certan sectons of Mau untl roads that wll stand up under rans shall be furnshed. rrespectve of the good tme that the attendants at the vaudevlle show and dance wll have tomorrow nght there s every reason to attend. The funds wll be devoted to the sendng of a Mau delegate to the Natonal Educatonal Assocaton conventon to work for better educatonal facltes for the chldren of those who are stay ng at home. t s a dst nterested move to a large extent on the part of the teachers. Many of them are malahns but theyre workng for the nterests of the communtes n whch they fnd themselves. But asde from the good cause t s a worthwhle entertanment that s beng offered and the dance wll be a jolly affar too Clarence Demar won a 25 mle road race 11 years ago. Wednesday he won the event over the same course wth 78 contestants n the fatest tme ever made over the course by more than three quarters of a mnute. And yet t s asserted that athletes go back n a very few years. Demar seems to have demonstrated that there s no need of gong back f one cares for hmself and t s a lesson to busness men as well as athletes. A man should mprove wth years not recede. Truly s a sorry state of affars shown by the reports as to the stuaton of the Waakea Homesteaders. When only one man out. of 220 s "ahead of the game" there s somethng radcally wrong asde from the slump n sugar prces. Area under cultvaton n cane has shrunk more than a thrd and productveness has shown a large declne as well. Who wants a homestead that cannot be made self mantanng? "DONT TELL EVERYTHNG" The sprt of the outdoors s evdent n "Dont Tell Everythng." t s a Paramount Pcture and produced wth the usual excellence that characterzes these offerngs. The noable thng of course s the combnaton of Wallace Red Glora Swanson and Ellott Dexter n the pcture whch n tself s a superor attracton. Uut when there s breezy story a tangle of fabrcatons and a lot of good stuatons enlvened by real actng t becomes of added nterest. Sam Wood drected Lorna Moon wrote and A. S. LeVno adapted the story. t has to do wth two women who love the same man a self sacrfcng frend who loves one of the women and who helps hs frend to wn her even aganst hs own chances of happness. There s a sprted polo ane and a realstc accdent durng ts progress. t s a real pcture wth real people n t. and t. s handsomely staged. "PRARE TRALS" "Prare Tals" s the fastest most exctng pcture that Tom Mx the darng cowboy star has done. Whle there are dfferences of about what type of stores are best adoptable to moton pctures there are no two opnons about such tales of the great outdoors as Tom Mx provdes. They have an rresst ble appeal to all classes of theater goers. "Prare Trals" s a breezy racy story of the great west by James H. Hendryx the celebrated novelst. Tom Mx fts nto the story so perfectly that t mght have been wrtten for hm. Only recently he appeared n another pcture "The Texan." by the same author and played wth great success the same role that of Tex Henlon the hotheaded young ranchman. "Prare Trals" s the story of the nward conflct that takes place when Tex Benton lover of the manly lfe and despser of womansh manners and custom falls n love. Whle one sde of hs nature cres out for the companonshp and love of Janet the other sde yearns for battle and strfe and all manly thngs. The part of Janet McWhorter s very ably played by Kathleen OCon nor a charmng actress. MOONLGHT AND HONEYSUCKLE The latest Realart pcture wll gve mothers somethng to thnk about. "The very deal" you can almost hear the more conservatve mothers snort. Hut then thats what makes them conservatve ther reluctance to devate from the ways of ther forefathers or foremothers to be more correct. For the dea s really a femnne one as formulated by Mary Mles Mnter n her latest Realart pcture "Moonlght and Honeysuckle." You really cant blame Mary what wth two men fallng all over themselves and each other to get her to whsper the fatal "Yes." And then there was another man off n the offng. What could the poor grl do? Especally as she seemed to lke each one thrtythre e Mn a thrd per cent. But trust a woman to fnd a way out of matrmonal trangle. f you have any doubts about the matter be sure to see the pcture. "HER STURDY OAK" Snce poets are temperamentally and nevtably dreamy mpractcal nfrm of purpose and unftted for the struggle for exstence the queston arses what sort of wves should they choose? Strong effcent resourceful women who wll take good care of them or weak helpless clngng vnes who wll force them to brace up and be supports nstead of dead weghts? Ths s the queston threshed out n "Her Sturdy Oak" Wanda Hawleys latest release. Mss Hawley plays the clngng vne role Walter Hers the hero role that of a goodnatured bt futle poet and Sylva Ashton s the ed busness woman strongmnd j who would care! for hm. There s fun galore n ths breezy domestc comedy by Klmer Harrs. The hero n ths nstance chooses the clngng vne who s as helpless and mpractcal as he s and how they muddle through the frst years of mar : red lte s amusngly shown. Advance Sales Good For Vaudevlle Show And Teachers Dance Sx good numbers n the vaudevlle show followed by a dance s the program offered for tomorrow nght at the Tentoral Buldng Kahulul by the Maul Teachers Assocaton. Reports that have come n from the varous sales commttees tell of good advance sales and several of the school prncpals have sent n for further allotments. Rehearsals of the varous acts have gone on steadly and reports from all the cast tell of readness. Several of the numbers are reported by those who have seen them as more than ordnally atractve and the bll promses to be easly the best thng of the knd that has been produced n Central Maul for a long tme. The Hawaan number nnd some of the dance numbers promse to be part cularly pleasng. Maus teachers are guests at nearly all of the dances durng the school year and ths tme they wll take the new role of beng hostesses of gvng the dance themselves. Good dance musc s promsed and the floor of the Terrtoral Buldng should be well taxed for capacty to accomodate the numbers that wll attend the dance after the curtan s rung down and the room cleared for dancng. HEARD N PASSNG "When Youve Got a Cold You cant enjoy the musc when your eyes are flamng red You cant enjoy the sngng for the buzzng n your head; The Sunbeams may be dancng all about you on the floor And Mr. Opportunty be standng at your door; Bu you have no wsh for glory and youve lost the love of gold When your bronchal tubes are wheezy and youre sufferng from a. cold. You cant be very happy when youre forced to cough and sneeze; There s nothng that s pleasng n the thngs that ought to please. Your dnner may be danty and" your food exactly rght But theres nothng on the table that can tempt your appette; And you cannot start a chuckle when a funny tale s told Lfe s just one dsmal burden when youve got a rotten cold. Your frends may throng about you but your thoughts are far away And your cold seems more mportant than the thngs they have to say; Though theres comfort at your fresde there s none for you to know And you slp through chlls and fever to the deepest depths of woe; Lfe may have a thousand blessngs for ts joys are manfold But youre doomed to gloom and torment when youre sufferng from a cold.
