The money was n a belt attached to these. Unfortunately he left the legs of the trousers hangng down by the sde of the bed. Bullen fell asleep wth the lamp burnng on a char near the bed. and was awakened wth a start by some one jerkng the trousers away from under hs pllow. Ths was about 2 a. m. Hawaan slands. nterestng Meetng of Excelsor Lodge Remenscent Talks by Members. The members and fraternal frends of Excelsor Lodge,. O. O. F., met n the lodge room last nght to commemorate the 50th annversary of the foun daton of the order n Honolulu. There were a number of vstng brethren from the States present, and a good sprnklng of the oldest members of the order n Honolulu. D. D. G. S. L. L. La Perre occuped the char of Noble Grand n place of L. W. Hough, who holds that offce n the lodge. The servces opened wth prayer and sngng of the openng ode. Then followed remarks by varous members of ther experence n the early days of Odd Fellowshp. Robert Lewers, who was Treasurer of Excelsor Lodge, told how "n the begnnng kerosene was an unknown quantty on the slands, and the only llumnaton they could get was from candles. Then kerosene and lamps came to Honolulu, and the lodge adopted ts use. Then gas was ntroduced, and Excelsor Lodge was prompt n keepng up wth the march of progress, and adopted t, but ths provng unsatsfactory t was abandoned and kerosene substtuted." Remarks were also made by Brothers ecker, Rose, Oat, Rowe, Turner and. W. Hough, N. G. W. C. Parke, n response to a general request.read extracts from Pacfc Commercal Advertser of 885. They were from an address delvered by hs fath er, the late Marshal Parke, P. D. D. G. S., on the occason of the 26th an nversary of Excelsor Lodge. t em braces the early hstory of the lodge and s much too long to publsh n ull. Mr. Parke sad: "At the tme Excelsor Lodge was n sttuted, Honolulu presented a very df ferent appearance from what t does today. The town was then composed, mostly, of grass houses and a few adobe buldngs. Even the stores, where the merchants transacted a large bus ness, wth but few exceptons were of the same materal. There were a few coral stone buldngs, and also some wooden ones. Nearly all the fences were adobe. But the exact fgures wll gve you a better dea of the town at that tme. There were,345 dwellng houses, of whch 49 were stone, 36 part stone and part adobe, 40 wood, 345 adobe and 875' grass. There were 40 stores, of whch 5 were stone, 0 wood and 5 adobe. These, wth but few exceptons, were plan, unpretendng buldngs. What a contrast to the cty as t now stands, wth ts fne blocks of stores, and ts handsome resdences scattered thckly from Kapalama to the Makk plans, and for a long dstance up the Nuuanu Valley. But few landmarks are left of the old unpretendng town. "The foregn populaton of the old town was 690, ncludng 6 lades and 4 chldren. Of the lades, 40 were Amercan, 0 Englsh, and Dansh. Our frst lodge room was n an adobe douse wth a grass roof, n the premses on Hotel street, known as Adams' yard. t had a veranda around t, where the Outsde Guardan had to keep constant watch on all sdes whle the lodge was n sesson. As tne nunang was du one story, t would not have been safe to have allowed hm to come nsde. You can readly magne that on rough and stormy nghts the surroundngs of the Outsde Guardan were not as com fortable and cheerful as they are at present. "n 847 we removed to another adobe house, near the corner of Hotel and Alakea streets, not far from the spot where the old Royal Hawaan Theater afterwards stood. "n 848 news reached Honolulu of the dscovery of gold n Calforna, whch caused qute an exctement here, as t dd elsewhere. Preparatons were at once made for departure, and a general stampede followed. Every avalable lttle craft was at once ftted for the voyage, and left here crowded wth passengers, nearly all of whom were foregners. There was such a general exodus that Honolulu was nearly depleted of ts foregn populaton. Of course, most of our members were borne along wth the crowd, and we had but very few left. Our meet ngs were soon confned to a mere Corporal's guard. For many months there was no quorum, and we could transact no busness; but we stll con tnued to meet together on Tuesday evenngs, to talk over our prospects, and to ascertan f any brother needed our ad or sympathy. As our funds were low, wth no prospect of an mmedate ncrease, we found t necessary to reduce our expenses and gve up our rooms. At that tme Brother H. N. Crabbe was Unted States naval storekeeper, and occuped the twostor y stone buldng near the corner of Fort and Merchant streets, and n whch Messrs. Ed. Hoffschlaeger & Co. for a long tme dd an extensve busness. n our dffculty Brother Crabbe came to our ad, and at hs knd nvtaton we removed all our paraphernala to hs premses. Ths was n the latter part of S48, and we remaned there nearly a year, durng all whch tme we contnued our nformal Tuesday evenng meetngs. The decks of the steamer were so crowded that there was hardly room to pass, and nearlj every person who went to make up that large gatherng, possessed ether a le or a bunch of flowers for some member of the Fraw ley Company. All but Mss Blanche Bates, Messrs. T. Danel Frawley and Frank Worthng arrved qute a whle before the de parture of the Marposa, and found much pleasure n a few pleasant words wth the many frends they have made and the musc of the Hawaan Band, statoned on the wharf. Mss Bates and Messrs. Frawley and Worthng arrved just a few mnutes before the departure of the steamer, and were forced to reman at the foot of the gangway untl the ropes were beng unted, for there were a large number of people watng to smother them wth flowers. As the Marposa hauled away from the wharf the members of the Frawley Company were scattered about here and there on the deck, but just as she was makng the turn, they ran up as far forward as possble, collected n a lttle group and waved aloha wth the slk Hawaan flags whch had been gven them at the Hawaan Hotel on the evenng before. t was ndeed a pretty sght to see them, laden as they were wth brght flowers and smlng so happly at ther frends on shore. Lttle Hope Ross was not ashamed to let people see how she felt about leavng Honolulu, and when no longer able to repress her feelngs, she had a good cry, ana tnen looked up smlngly agan.
