Psalms XXX. v:13. 5 O O Mr. Frank Cooke s not one to offer "self-prase-," but he can be depended upon to do a good deed and to help a man n need. (Cunha.) HEINRICH 4V V V W. SCHMIDT. Death has made many a gap n the ranks of the kamaanas durng the past few months, lately removng another of the well-know- n resdents of ths cty n the person of Henrch Wlhelm Schmdt. Mr. Schmdt was one of the poneers of the German colony here and took a leadng place among those others of hs countrymen who have been a great part n the upbuldng of ths cty. Owng to hs age, he was not well known to the newcomers of Honolulu, but among the many older resdents, hs fame and hs name are famlar, and hs death leaves aplace n ths communty that wll be hard to fll. W IM V (Can't some one dg up a few dollars for the Methodst church?) "Oh, yes."?? 5 Ths makes four bg excursons wth an aggregate of nearly 700 toursts for Honolulu! J j5 J0 Forty thousand trees are beng propagated n the nursery on Kng street for Arbor Day plantng. 5 IV jj NEW YORK, October 9. Wllam Randolph Hearst, owner of a strng of newspapers from the Atlantc to the Pacfc, has offered a $50,000 prze for a flght n an arshp from the Atlantc to the Pacfc Coast of the.unted States, by way of Chcago, the flght to be made wthn the month. HONOLULU, NOVEMBER, GIVE US MEN 1 Men from every rank, Fresh and free and frank; Men of thought and readng, Men of lght and leadng, Men of loyal breedng, The Naton's welfare speedng; Men of fath and not of fcton, Men of lofty am and acton ; Gve us men I say agan, Gve us Men! Gve us Men! Men who never shame ther mothers, Men who never fal ther brothers, True, however false are others; Gve us Men! I say agan, Gve us Men! Gve us Men! Men who, when the tempest gathers, Grasp the standard of ther fathers In the thckest fght. Men who strke for home and altar, Let the coward crnge and falter, God defend the rght! True as truth, though lorn and lonely, Tender, as the brave are only; Men who tread where sants have trod, Men for Country Home and God; Gve us Men! I say agan agan Gve us such nren! Bshop of Exeter. 5 (? 5 Pasted on the wndow of the book publsher's store was the sgn, "Porter wanted," and n the wndow tself on a ple of books the placard, "Dckens' Works All Ths Week for $4." The able- - (Prce $3.00 per nnnm copes 25 cent! lookng Irshman read frst the sgn and then the placard. He scratched hs head and blurted out: "Dckens may take the job! Dckens can wur-r- k ahl the week fer foor dollars f he wants to, but I'm a unon man. I'll not touch t. Ye'd betther kape Dckens." It s to be hoped that the news from Lsbon that the consular representatves of the Republc of Portugal are to be new men, wth the representatves of the kngdom recalled, does not mean that Consul Canavarro s to leave Honolulu. Mr. Canavarro s now one of the kamaanas, unversally respected, dlgent n hs dutes, and honored as dean of the local consular corps. Whatever the status of hs government, may he be permtted to reman wth us. S 5 2 "Do you realze that there are nearly 90,000 Japanese n ths country and only 30,000 Hawa-ans-? That n the last ten years the Japanese have ncreased by 19,000 and the Hawaans have decreased by 5,000? That there are more Japanese chldren n the schools than there are Hawaan chldren? There are only 6,200 Hawaan and over 7,000 Japanese chldren n the schools today. Do you realze that the Japanese n Hawa have ncreased snce 1900 on an average of over a hundred per cent, every two years? Another fact s that the Secretary's offce has regstered as Hawaan-bor- n Japanese n one year 3,202 male chldren." A. L. C. Atknson. Senator La Follette s credted wth ths regardng a notorous fnancer: "He got rather a setback n a talk he had last sesson wth one of hs audtors. 'Money?' he sad. 'Bah! There are thousands of ways of makng money.' 'Yes, but only one honest way,' our man remarked. 'What way's that?' 'I thought you wouldn't know t,' was the reply."

Those who talk at tmes of the great thngs that would happen should Honolulu be made a second Monte Carlo, should look at what has happened to the Pars of Amerca. V V W The entre estate of the late Sarah Glman s left to her chldren, James A. Glman and Carre A. Glman. The wll was made n June, 1903, and provdes that the chldren named shall be executor and executrx. To the daughter s left $10,000 and all household and personal effects. To the son are left stocks and bonds. ft THE GASKELL CENTENARY The centenary of the brth of Mrs. Gaskell, whose Cranford has become a classc, occurred on September 29, and was duly observed n Chelsea, England, where she was born, and n Knutsford, a lttle town near 'Manchester, whch was the orgnal Cranford. Here Elzabeth Cleghorn Gaskell spent much of her grlhood. J& THE HONOLULU TIMES Washngton, September 9. Ths season wll go down n medcal hstory as "the black summer of 1910," accordng to a statstcan who has been studyng the summers nfantle death record. In New York Cty alone, n one week ths summer, 875 nfants ded n spte of the efforts n ther behalf whch were made by chartable and other organzatons. The condtons n New York and elsewhere are to be consdered at a Conference on Preventon of Infantle Mortalty whch s to be held n Baltmore n November. Such subjects as mlk dspensares, classes for mothers and the actvtes of vstng nurses, wll also be dscussed. There wll also be a report on the work of the League of Lttle Mothers, an organzaton of lttle foster mothers of Gotham whch physcans and phlanthropsts say bds far ultmately to revolutonze condtons n the poor dstrcts of the metropols. The tny members of ths league have been nstructed by physcans and traned nurses regardng the best ways to feed, bathe and care for lttle charges. The chldren have been warned regardng the germs that lurk n cheap ce cream and the danger of feedng watermelons or other fruts to the baby. 2m $v WE UNDERSTAND. The Government wll gve the Industral School for Grls all the land needed for agrcultural and stock purposes, for wood and for farm purposes, but what wll be needed to add to all ths generous help wll be an appropraton from the next Legslature for the buldngs cottages a number, a neat admnstratve buldng, cookhouse, laundry and perhaps a small chapel. We feel qute sure the gentlemen of the Legslature wll see the expedency and excellence of all ths plan for the poor grls, and who would lke, and who would sem-out-of-dothrve on, ths or lfe. It s a pty to keep them cooped up, so to speak, lttle and bg, at Palama very much longer. We all know how the Hawaan revels n beng free to wander by wood and stream to be out n the sunshne and the ar (or even ran). These grls need the same and long for t. They are wllng to work and to learn, wllng to dg, spade, hoe and plant, wllng even to chop ther own frewood, to make ther own butter, to mlk cows, look after bees and pgeons and to feed fowls. But all ths sort of work cannot be done wthout a large farm to lve on and farm products to watch and look after. All ths would keep them healthy and happy. In the numerous plan, neat cottages they would come, wth tme, to learn the true home lfe and how to make a few dollars go a long way, by thrft and ndustry. They would learn how to make a home sweet and comfortable n these lttle cottages, so that n the future they could make for themselves. We do hope these many grls wll have the true pcnc farm, lfe, wth woods and water, trees and flowers, and wll be taken away and off from Palama to a more lfe and manner of lvng. We earnestly be- out-reach- leve that, wth the rght envronment, ths large colony of Hawaan grls could manage a large ranch and come to have a good revenue from the same, outsde of the needs of ther own table. It could be made as successful, f- nancally, as any farm of ts sze n the Terrtory. The grls would be happy, ndustrous and ambtous for the success of ther farm. Wthout an am, youth, as well as adult, becomes lstless and despondent. Ths we all know. tv 2& w "Mamma,",'sad lttle Ethel, wth a dscouraged look on her face, "I an't gong to school any more." "Why, my deare, what's the matter?" the mother gently nqured. " 'Cause t an't no use at all. I can never learn to spell. The teacher keeps changng the words on me all the tme." Lttle Grl "Oh, dear, no! I smply turn up my nose and treat hm wth despsery." Punch. 5 fc?4 lf LET US SMILE. The thng that goes the furthest toward makng lfe worth whle, That costs the least and does the most s just a pleasant smle. The smle that bubbles from the heart that loves ts fellow-me-n Wll drve away the clouds of gloom and coax the sun agan. It's full of worth and goodness, too, wth manly kndness blent, It's worth a mllon dollars, and t doesn't cost a cent. There s no room for sadness when we see a cheery smle; It always has the same good look ; t's never out of style ; It nerves us on to try agan, when falure makes us blue; The dmples of encouragement are good for me and you. It pays the hghest nterest for t s merely lent It's worth a mllon dollars, and t doesn't cost a cent. A smle comes very easy you can wrnkle up wth cheer A hundred tmes before you can squeeze out a salty tear; It rpples out, moreover, n the heart-strn- gs that wll tug And always leaves an echo that s very lke a hug So, smle away Folks understand! what by a smle s meant It's worth a mllon dollars, and t doesn't cost a cent. w & (7 Cncnnat, Oho, October 18. Bshop Restarck ntroduced to the conventon one o( hs coworkers n the Hawaan Islands, a Chnese, the Reverend Kong Yn Tet, pastor of St. Peter's chapel of that cty, who also spoke of Hawaan affars. 5? w Pars, September 9. Four years ago Santos Dumont at Bagatelle made the frst aeroplane flght n Europe. Next year French aeroplane manufacturers expect to sell 11,000 machnes. More than 1000 aeroplanes have been sold n France snce the frst of the year, and another 1000 wll be turned out and delvered before the end of the year. Three hundred Bler--ot monoplanes and 200 Farman bplanes have been sold ths year, these two types beng the most popular. v 11 W A MOTHER'S CREED. (Mrs. Ozora S. Davs, n Zon Herald.) 4 . " THE HONOLULU TIMES 6 tf THE HONOLULU TIMES Elte Buldng, Room 8. NOVEMBER, ANNE M. PRESCOTT, Edtor and Propretor. KALANIANAOLE "Kuho and Prosperty go hand-n-hand-," announced a speaker at the Republcan Terrtoral Conventon, a statement that mght very well be taken as the campagn slogan. Prosperty to Hawa comes most certanly n what Kuho stands for protecton to the man ndustry, encouragement to the smaller ndustres, stablty n the protectve system, encouragement to homesteaders and permanent settlers, protecton to ctzen laborers and contnuance of mmgraton along proven and benefcal lnes. In these thngs rest the prosperty of Hawa and for these thngs Prnce Cupd stands. Hawa s n the formatve perod, just comng nto her own. Towards these Islands, f the present condton of affars poltcally contnues, a steady stream of gold s comng, mllons for works connected wth the natonal defense, mllons for the products of our sol, and mllons for the development of the resources of the Terrtory through the nvestments of outsders satsfed wth the outlook. Under the crcumstances t would be folly for ths country to break the chan of prosperty by dscontnung the servces of Kuho at Washngton. He has not been the sole factor n securng all that we have had and all that has been promsed, but he has been a very large part n t. The Delegate returned from Washngton ths year wth a record that was not surpassed by any man n ether branch of Congress. He got everythng he was asked to get, he got some thngs that those here dd not dare to ask for, he got everythng he went after and n every respect he represented the people of Hawa. The Republcans could, n justce to the party, name no one to take hs place; the Terrtory, n justce to tself, cannot afford to elect anyone to replace hm' at Washngton. 5 k5 5 A PRISON FUND. It has come home to us wth great force the past week, the real, vtal and most urgent need for what we wll term a "prson fund;" so that when the culprt shall have served hs terrm n prson, for any crme commtted, and s agan at lberty, the shackles fallen off and he free to begn a new lfe and an honest one, he may fnd someone to gve hm a lttle help, a helpng hand to encourage hm to keep forevermore n a straght path. It s very hard, t s a fearful thng we can but fancy, ths comng out, after years, t often s, of the lfe of captvty; t s almost as terrble, ndeed, as the gong nl The man stands free, on the road, we wll say ; he s told n the early mornng he can go, and soon he hears the prson doors shut and clang behnd hm. It s a common occurrence at the prson for a man's tme to be "up," and lkely no one watches, and few care, where he goes when once out of sght. He wanders, t may be, amlessly nto the town where, when t s known that he s a released convct, no one cares to house or entertan hm. He has no money, only a few poor clothes, no home, no shelter, no work, no chance to lve or to begn lfe anew, however much he may desre, or however frmly he may have resolved, to lve an honest lfe, once agan hs own master İt seems to hm, as he goes from one place to another and fnds no cheerng word, no help, that every man's hand s aganst hm. But ths s not so ; t s only that what s everyone's concern s no one's concern. The crowd on the street, what do they know of hm, the prsoner released that mornng, or the day before, or the day or the week before that? In the stores, on the wharf, what can they know of that poor human drftng by, downcast and downhearted, desolate and forlorn? Now, let us magne one of the good people that has talked to hm all the Sundays, of all the years of hs prson lfe, that has sung wth hm', prayed and read to hm, exhortng hm and all hs prson companons to turn all ther thought toward the All-lov- ng Father for gudng, protecton and help n all ther future stay on earth; that He can never forsake them, or fal to come to ther assstance, f they are loyal and true. Now, here s ths man, also testng all that teachng, and he thnks over and over, "Oh, f I could but meet one of those men today or one of those women, and he or she would tell me what to do, would gve or lend me a lttle money (and prsoners have been known to return borrowed money), that I mght go here or there and get a start, cther n a strange place or among good old frends. Oh, f I only could!" We are tellng condtons as they really often exst here, at our own Oahu prson, and we are pleadng for a prson fund, that one be started, and any dsposed to gve to ths work, much or lttle addng to the same at any tme. Ths fund could be kept n the bank, any one of the banks, on nterest, perhaps, and one of the regular vstors at the prson (say Mss Yarrow) could take charge of the same, and could lend or gve, as she faced the need. Many a man would be saved n ths way from a downward course, as we all must beleve. "Am I my brother's keeper?" Yes, not only n prson, but when he has pad, so far as he can, the prce of hs msdong. It wll not take much, my dear reader, to start ths "fund," and shall we not have one? It s true that prsoners are often helped, we must hope and beleve, helped n varous ways when a case s known ; but wc all know there s no way qute so good a way as a thoroughly systematc way, and always more brought to pass n that way! If there could be "a way" found to shadow, so to speak, every man when he frst leaves the prson premses, and whle good resolutons and ams are n hs mnd. "Inasmuch as ye have done t unto one of the least " October 3, A. M. P. h

5 THE HONOLULU TIMES FIVE SEATTLE BOYS. "A few days ago," sad the post master, "three badly frghtened and exceedngly nervous boys were ushered nto ray offce. They had nformed the clerk n the outer offce that the matter n hand was for my personal ear. "We done t, and we'll take what's comng to us," sad the smallest of the tro. "Done what?" I asked. "Hm and hm and me and Beany and Scotty were playng "follow the leader," and Beany jumped over a mal box, and then I jumped, and the box tpped over and ht a rock and broke the lock off, and the letters all flew out on the ground,' sad the spokesman. "Where s the box?" I asked. "It's the box on the corner of Thrteenth and Unon," answered the boy," and Beany and Scotty s guardn' t wth clubs. We knew we done somethng awful, and we was gon' to run away. Then we decded to put our names and addresses n the box, and let you fnd us f you could. Then we decded to come and tell, and we're here." "I'm not strong on the sermon-ette,- " sad the postmaster, "but I wll assure you that I dd my best to show those boys that they had done a very brave and manly thng, and that such a prncple, f followed through lfe, could not lead them far astray. I assured the boys that ther honorable conduct n not only confessng, but n leavng some of ther number to guard the government's property enttled them to absolute forgveness. "Three very happy youngsters left the offce to convey the tdngs to the guard at the mal-bo- x. As they left, one boy sad, 'I knew they wouldn't hang us.' "I sent a man for the broken box. When t came n, we opened t, and there was the letter the boys had wrtten before they had decded to face the musc: '"Mster Postmaster: We done t, but we ddn't go to. He has the same clam as specalst that I make for myself. In the end the man whose name was never heard beyond the house n whch he lved, or the shop n whch he worked, may have a larger place than the chap whose name has been a household word n two contnents. Yes, I beleve n my job. May I be kept true to the task whch les before me true to myself and to God who ntrusted me wth t. I beleve n my fellow man. He may not always agree wth me. I'd feel sorry for hm f he dd, because I myself do not beleve some of the thngs that were absolutely sure n my own mnd a dozen years ago. 6 THE HONOLULU TIMES I I r w w sun, and moon, and the law by whch they act s the law of gravtaton. Ths law declares that there s a force of attracton between two bodes, or, to put t dfferently, tha't every partcle of matter n the unverse attracts every other partcle, the attracton dependng on ther mutual dstances and ther mass. Takng the moon's attracton frst, t s assumed that the whole of the earth s covered by the ocean. The moon attracts the waters, and that layer of water mmedately under the moon gets heaped up on the sde nearest the moon. Hgh tde wll be there. The waters on the dstant sde are heaped up also, and ths s a lttle detal that puzzles most people, because here one would naturally expect low water. The reason of the seemng paradox s that the waters on the dstant sde are thousands of mles further away from the moon than s the earth's center. The earth thus gets more of the moon's pull than the dstant waters. These waters heap themselves up away from the earth and moon, and hgh tde wll be there also. The observed tde s the effect of both lunar and solar pull. Of the two, the sun's pull s the weaker, because of ts greater dstance from the earth. At new moon the heght of the tdes s ncreased. Sun and moon then pull n the same drecton. At full moon there s also an ncreased heght. Sun and moon then renforce each other, though they are on opposte sdes of the earth. London T. THE EDITOR'S BRIEF NOTES FOR OCTOBER. October s here and n fne shape, cooler and not so aggressve (aggravatng) (not so much of a burr), not stcky, lke as was September. We have the promse now and the look n the sky of real fall weather. The ranbows presage the comng on of the rany season that we all enjoy. October 4. Secretary Wood says we shall have our sdewalks thronged wth toursts and not enough hotels or lodgngs for them all. Very well, then, tents can (camps) be put up n our squares and on our hll-slope- s; for everyone s now n favor of berths. Are out-do- or we not rght? In fact, we would lke never to go nsde, but cook, eat and sleep n the open. In the Adrondacks ths mode of lvng has been enjoyed for many, many years. And they go afshng for ther breakfast and then brol and bol (coffee), bake gve thanks hoe-cak- e, (many), and eat wth ther nvted welcome guest, Good Appette. It s a tasty meal of Dame Nature's best. "And tell us about the lunch." Oh, that's another story. Wat a bt (bte). There are nuts to crack n October and pppns and pumpkns and all the merry harvest to lug n, to cover. But ths s Hawa, that knows no heat or cold! (The green hlls all about the town, About thy feet, the sea.) Sster Beatrce of the Prory s makng some of the most exquste lace we have ever examned n Honolulu, fne as a fary's fabrc. Go to see her Pandora's box of handwork. October 10. To hear the exclamatons of delght from toursts as they rde up nto Manoa Valley s very pleasant and sometmes ludcrous. As the car turns from one pont to another they often seem amazed. On returnng, they take transfers for the Aquarum to have a look at the marvelous fshes and thnk the mornng's trp s a great deal for the few dmes expended! "WW - c

7 THE HONOLULU TIMES We agree wth them on every pont and urge them to keep on wth the sght-seen- g. The weather s now deal, and when a steamer arrves from the Colones, as today, the passengers many of them betake themselves to the cars and ask the conductors to gve them transfers and through Kng street runs often the frst rde, or Punahou and up Manoa. In fact, Kng street seems to please them not a lttle, and they are constantly pontng at trees and gardens and never grow mpatent f the car wats for a few mnutes. It s all one to them they are out for pleasure. 'Many of them look to be well-to-d- o people, and often very gentle n ther manner n addressng the conductors or any other one on the car. They are often of the sort, collected and courteous, and t s pleasant to see them n our mdst. We lke to see the throng at the postoffce on steamer days, and to hear the good-nature- d remarks and comments. Our post-off- ce seems to them a very small affar, as they jostle aganst each other wth ther multtude of letters and cards, but wth, as a rule, the utmost good nature and forbearance, pleasant travelers that they are. It s so nce, you know, to be on land agan, f only for a few hours a deep sense of thankfulness! Some of them seem lke chldren out for a holday. We all look to Mr. Kruger, Fort street, to keep the rght tme for our tme-keeper- s. October 14. It s a wonder that the Mc-Inern- y's stock of footwear and all sorts of haberdashery never seems for a day to gve out or to be sold out wndows always beng reflled and replenshed wth the most attractve mportatons, and then we step n at May's and can get any quantty of just what we are wantng; one would thnk the clerk mutter one clay: "It s all gone, gone and I'm sorry, but that perhaps he mght overhear butter or cheese; n fact, we're runnng low on nearly all table supples. Try Day's ; he may help you out." But t s not so. At May's they can feed the Army and any stray Navy we can but beleve; t s a marvel, ths grocery busness. Then there s Ehler's; they never say: "No more gnghams or lawns ths week." But they wll pont to ple after ple of all grades and make and prce; all the colors, tnts and hues, and shade after shade, one must be suted. It really seems that some one s plng n bales of goods at the back door, whle the women wth bundles are gong out the front doors. And then look on the opposte sde of the street, always busy measurng off rbbons and lace, openng glove boxes and takng n the dollars. The storekeepers seem about the happest folk f we except the brokers and the bankers and the plantaton people ; of course, they are full up n ples of materal called con, all of yellow tnt gold that s. But then, the blacksmth keeps hs fre agong, and the carpenter nals and whstles, the shps load and unload, and Honolulu s one bg workshop, upstars and downstars, from mornng, when the boys unlock and open, untl the doors shut at nght. October 18. G. & C. Merram Co., Sprngfeld, Mass., are the publshers of "Webster's College Dctonary," whch s a most comfortable sze for the student to handle. We take great pleasure n commendng the same to our readers. It s a fnshed work. It seems to us about all that s needed n that lne. The annual meetng of the W. C. T. U. was held yesterday n the Punahou home of Dr. and Mrs. Whtney. Mrs. W. has been the presdent of ths assocaton for (only) twenty-s- x years. We were deeply nterested n the msson work of Kakaako as presented n the paper read by Mrs. Rder. It was all most ably set forth the troubles and the trumphs. (But the lady read that they have one btter and sore grevance n the dstrct a hog ranch, coverng, so t would seem, a large area ; and they all most earnestly desre ts removal, by the powers that be!) Rev. and Mrs. Prce, mssonares returnng to South Chhl Msson of North Chna, by the Asa, spent half an hour at the meetng. Mr. P. spoke n the most elo quent terms, movng us by hs sncerty and earnestness. Both know the language and are now ntendng to spend the remander of ther lves n the work "a strenuous work and a lfe of smplcty and economy." A brother of Mr. Prce, hs wfe and daughter, were among the martyrs n the Boxer uprsng. Thnk of that, we of comfortable lves! Who wll help that "ndependent" msson of Chh-l-, North Chna? It has already a splendd start n the way of farm, and schools for boys and grls. But there are mllons all about them n darkness darkness that can be felt! October 21. There was a large gatherng at St. Clements last evenng. The school-roo- m was transformed and fashoned nto a spacous and beautful drawng-roo- and presented a scene of tropcal beauty m to one on enterng. But we all know the Usbornes are nothng f not artsts, and ths s fan to crop out and come to the front, what tme they would gve ther frends an evenng of delghtful hosptalty. There was choce musc, vocal and nstrumental, the sngng and playng of Mrs. Norton Bobo and Reynolds beng very heartly apprecated. There were splendd vews of Honolulu, twenty years ago, presented by Canon Usborne, and not a few of them caused great merrment and some very humorous comment one of "the rapd transt" n partcular on Nuuanu avenue. Every vew found lvely nterest one of the old Prory n partcular, and many others were qute famlar. We hope the Canon wll show them agan, for t s somethng of whch one does not tre. They were most beautful and nterestng. Delcous refreshments were served by the "lttle men and lttle women," and wth wllng feet dd they run to ther happy polte part, dong the role (cake) wth perfect grace and gentle manner. About ten o'clock the guests reluctantly bade ther knd host and hostess good-ngh- t. The moon was up for the happy home-gon- g. Mrs. Emerson sad they had found no place n all ther wanderngs lke to Honolulu. We

8 THE HONOLULU TIMES - ti were, glad, too, to. meet Mss Newcomb, Mrs. Thompson, Mrs. Peacock, Mrs. Englsh, and many others. It seemed lke a large famly gatherng met for mutual enjoyment and not of the nature of a formal recepton, as must be the case where many are unknown and strangers. But kamaanas are always easy folk to meet and make qute at home. It s the ntenton of the Vestry to hold these socables once a month for the present. tj A FARM FOR THE GIRLS. There s no reason why the grls that are mothered by the government should not have a farm at the very least a garden home as well as the boys so well fxed and dong so well at Waalee. Although the Boys' Industral School has outgrown ts accommodatons n the way of buldngs, the change from town to farm lfe has been a great success both for the boys and the government. A lke change for the grls ought to brng equally good results, and the government has a wde range of choce of ste wthout havng to buy land. As well known, the Grls' Industral School occupes the buldngs of the former reformatory school for boys, but one-ha- lf of the grounds was taken some years ago as the ste for one of the bg publc schools now adornng the cty. That porton had been under cultvaton n bananas and vegetables from an early perod of the boys' reformatory, and had t been left for the grls' ndustral school mght n some measure have served the purpose now advocated. Yet the stuaton s not one that can be assocated wth the dea of country lfe, and the sol beng a shallow layer of earth upon a coral outcrop s not easy of cultvaton. The place s, moreover, too publc and too close to the Asatc quarter for ts purpose, whle the restrcted ;con-fn- es of the premses are more suggestve of a common jal than an nsttuton desgned to afford frendless, neglected and wayward young grls the opportunty of becomng adapted to respectable and useful domestcty. Next legslature s antcpated as one that wll retreve the record of last sesson, whch was probably the worst ever made n the Hawaan Islands, n the matter of provdng for educaton. Whatever polcy of educatonal progress may be submtted to the lawmakers should contan a plan, upon the bass now suggested or somethng lke t, for the reloca-grl- s' ndustral school. Danel Logan. 5 O. THE SUNRISE COURT. A number of the larger ctes and some of the smaller towns, both of the Unted States and Canada, have adopted a new system of dealng wth arrested drunks that s sad to work out very satsfactorly and whch, t would seem, mght well be gven a tryout n Honolulu. The new plan s n effect a "sunrse court," at whch men arrested the prevous nght for drunkenness are tred and, where the crcumstances warrant t, turned loose. As a general thng, the punshment for drunkenness, except n aggravated cases or cases of habtual drunkards, s a small fne. Usually n the Honolulu polce court a fne of three dollars and costs, amountng n all to four dollars, s mposed. In perhaps the majorty of cases the man arrested s able to pay the fne and s, therefore, lberated. Sometmes he s freed wthout beng fned. But by the tme he has had hs hearng before the polce magstrate, t s late n the mornng and he has probably lost a day's work. The "sunrse court" would obvate ths, and also releve the arrested man of the notorety of appearng n polce court durng the busness hours of the day. He would appear before the judge and obtan hs release n tme to go to work for the full day. In Honolulu partcularly the men who are most lable to be arrested for drunkenness are men whose famles need all of ther wages and the loss of a day's work s often a serous matter. Not nfrequently, too, a man who has, through havng to appear n polce court, lost hs day's work, havng nothng else to occupy hs mnd, goes out to fll up agan. It mght be a lttle nconvenent for the judge and some of the court offcers to get around for a "sunrse court," but that s hardly a weghty reason aganst the adopton of the system that s workng out so well n other ctes and whch should work to even better advantage n Honolulu. The plan s at least worth tryng. w O v "We have as chef of forestry n Hawa Ralph S. Hosmer, who s partly pad by the Federal government and partly by the Terrtory. He and our Terrtoral veternaran and entomologst are dong goo dwork. The bulk of our ndgenous trees are slow growers, so we are expermentng wdely wth trees of qucker growth from all over the world. We are tryng them on all alttudes, from sea level to 10,000 feet. We hope to replant the whole of our forest area, the upper portons especally. A large area already has been condemned for ths purpose and we have shut out cattle and goats from t. These have been largely responsble for the destructon of the forests by eatng the undergrowth. Many old natve trees are of parastc growth, and undergrowth s necessary for ther nourshment and preservaton. "Hawa s now very prosperous, as sugar s brngng a good prce. One or two cotton plantatons have been started and are prosperous. There s much land not ft for sugar growng whch s good for cotton or pneapples." It wll be news to many to hear that Hawa s dong a bg busness n Formosa wth machnery and puttng up sugar factores complete, but Mr. Hedemann says that hs company has already nstalled fve such factores, and when n Japan recently he closed a contract for a sxth. "At Honolulu," he sad, "we have factores and machne shops, coppersmth and blacksmth shops and employ 600 mechancs, all Caucasans. The busness has been establshed for ffty years, but snce annexaton people n the Islands have spent over $100,-000,0-00 n developng the ndustry of cane sugar, whch n all the factores except one s made nto what s called raw sugar to be!,' MsssMsEl 3"mfeMj'36KS?H

The sugar ndustry has developed perhaps 100 per cent, n the last ten years, and ts development has brought an ncreasng demand for the newest desgned machnery, partcularly that whch wll save labor. Webster's Collegate Dctonary. W. w w 5 It s often stated that there are no cases of dre poverty n Hawa, that no matter how poor the people may be, they are always assured of a lvng. That ths s not so appears from the report of Mrs. A. C. Jordan, manager of the Assocated Chartes of Hawa. Mrs. Jordan n her report for October 1 states that the total recepts of the socety for the past month have been $1051 and the expendtures $ Regardng the work she says: "The manager receves much assstance n her work from the nurses at the Palama Settlement. These devoted young women make daly vsts n the tenements and poorer quarters of the cty; and report any case of desttuton. Slummng for mere curosty's sake, s not to be commended, but I am sure that f some of our 'women at ease' and men, as well, were to make a round of calls wth a nurse, or the manager of the Assocated Chartes, they would have a better understandng of the condton of ther less fortunate brothers and ssters, and be ready to share ther good thngs, as well as more contented n the 'pleasant places' n whch ther 'lves have been cast.' "Many knd frends have brought clothng, so acceptable to those who only seem able to earn enough for food, to keep body and soul together. One frend donated crockery plates are a luxury n many of the so-callhomes such homes! "The Strangers' Frend Socety's beds at the hosptal have been n great demand, all of them havng been occuped most of the tme." ( J HER WORK. The tny daughter of a certan household sad one mornng at breakfast, "After I get my work done I am gong to play dolls." One wondered what "work" such a tny mss had to do. But she had an apponted task and was expected to see that t was done each mornng. The task was to merely see that the sofa pllows were straghtened out and n ther places, but she went about t wth an ar of work, and she saw that the accomplshment of her task added greatly to the tdness of the room, so she performed t wth great prde. What an excellent plan t s to gve chldren some partcular task for whch they are regularly responsble. It makes them feel that they are part of the household and bear responsblty for ts tdy appearance.
