4 THE GARDEN SLAND TUESDAY, JULY 7 94 THE GARDEN SLAND TUESDAY JULY 7 94 ssued-ever- y Tuesday Entered at the post offce at Lhue, Kaua, as second-clas- s matter Subscrpton Rates $250 Per Year, $50 tor sx months N ADVANCE Advertsng Rates, 75 Cents An nch Per Month L D Tmmons K C Hopper The Lquor Busness Edtor Manager The lquor busness of Kaua should be put on a strctly cash bass "Lquor s a luxury; f a man has not the cash to pay for t, he has no rht to drnk," - s an expresson coned by one of the leadng and most successful lquor merchants of the Hawaan slands As we understand t, credt for lquor s easy to obtan on Kaua, and, nasmuch as t seems to be a human weakness to pay a lquor bll ahead of the blls of the grocer, the butcher and all others, t s an mportant am of the lquor merchant to extend hs busness of gvng credt as much as possble But, as n everythng else, the lquor merchant does lose here and there on acconnts, and at the end of the year hs net earnngs are materally ltssened thereby t s, of course, too late to do anythng ths year, tor the lcenses have already been granted upon the old bass, but we thnk both the lquor men and the lquor commsson mght well consder serously for the next perod the queston of dong away entrely wth credt n the lquor busness The regulaton should be sweepng, and should nclude also shpments of lquor from the outsde nto Kautl on credt to other than l-- a ed dealers f the law on t tlr-c- T pont Y not explc gt t should be made so Lquor merchants say: "There s no use tryng to keep a man from gettng lquor f he wants t, he wll get t somehow" All rght Then the lauor merchant should be heartly n favor of ths plan, for, accordng to hs own reasonng, le wll sell ust as much, and moreover, wll get hs cash n advance for hs goods He wll do awav wth a lot of expen sve bookkeepng, collectng and bad accounts, thus gvng hm a larger proft at the end of the year Duty Of Hawaans No elenunt of Kauas ctzenshp should more readly and heartly combne n support of Hon Clas A Rce for Congress than the natve Hawaans They have for twelve long years thrown ther support and ther votes to Kuho, and what have they receved n return? What nterest has Kuho ever taken or shown n the Hawaans of Kaua? He has spent a great deal of tme n dleness around hs home n Wakk f he cared or thought anythng of the Hawaans of Kaua, why has he not come over here and vsted them and found out ther needs and wshes? No; only ust before electon he runs over here, lnes the Hawa ans up, and says: "Now, you must be good and vote for me agan" Then he scoots back to and as soon as the electon s over forgets hs Hawaan frends on Kaua entrely s ths not gospel truth? How long wll the Hawaans of Kaua permt themselves to be made fools of n ths way? Wll they do t agan ths year? n the nam of common sense and ustce to themselves, we hope not The prmary law gves to the Hawaans the chance to express themselves n ther own party They wll have, n ther own Republcan party to vote for, on the one hand, ther own neghbor and frend, Hon Clas A Rce, whom they know wll stay wth them frst, last and all the tme, and on the other hand thev wll have a man who has betrayed ther trust and thrown them down sx tmes and now wshes them to take ther btter medcne a seventh tme! What wll the natve Hawaans of Kaua do about t? There s only one thng to do work and vote for Hon Charles A Rce n the prmares Gve hm a sold Hawaan vote on Kaua, and show to the world that you cannot be fooled all the tme and that you ntend to place your trust where you know t wll be safe Sweepng Prohbton The State of West Vrgna, by a maorty vote of 92,342 at a regular electon, has put nto force prohbton law more strngent than any yet enacted n the country, perhaps Under t t wll be unlawful t o manufacture, sell, gve away or possess ntoxcatng lquors anywhere wthn the State Nether druggsts nor club houses are allowed to carry t t s also unlawful to advertse lquors n the State, ether n newspapers, on bll - boards, by crculars or other wse; and necessary funds have been approprated for carryng out the law Wth publc sentment so overwhelmngly on the sde of prohbton, ths law n West Vrgna s certan to be carred out and enforced successfully And that brngs to mnd the very correct concluson that prohbton prohbts ust n proporton to the publc sentment behnd t The old sayng that "Prohbton does not prohbt" has been knocked slly so many tmes of late that t s scarcely worth repeatng At the same tme n each case of successful prohbton, the wll of the people has been behnd t; but wthout a unted popular sent ment, t must be adml:tedu: ant promton cannot, rroh, al The vst of the All Students baseball team has brought forcbly to the attenton of the players and fans of Kaua the mportance of practce The All Students s not a frst team n, but when thrown aganst a team whch has not had suffcent practce and s untraned n the fne ponts of team work, they smply have everythng ther own way Before the season s started next year, the lo cal teams should be thoroughly or ganzed and gven two or three months dlgent practce, under competent leaders Then and not untl then can they hope to make a credttabe showng aganst out sde teams when the opportunty comes around agan Our teams are good enough for home playng, and everybody enoys the local games, but we would dearly lke to see them able to hold ther own aganst vstors, as well The complant made by a correspondent n another column that the baseball park at Koloa s beng used for a rubbsh dump may or may not be true, but t should be looked nto n tact, the people of Koloa should go a step farther and clean up ther park a bt t bears a ragged, more or less flthy, appearance all the tme, whle wth a lttle attenton t could be made qute pleasng to the eye We would suggest that the publc sprted ctzens of Ko loa put ther park n shape durng the summer; and that when school opens n September, Prncpal Bush appont commttees of volun teers from among hs boys to work Saturdays and keep t so, "As goes Mane, so goes the Unon" "As goes Wamanalo, so goes Oahu" These are tamlar sayngs, but have fallen true so many tmes that t has become a sort of habt to beleve n them Let us, however, add another of eual mert: "As goes Kaua, so goes the Hawaan slands" and apply t to the contest for the Drlegateshp at Washngton Hawa could not do better than have t that way the-boar- At ts meetng last Wednesday d of Supervsors faled to take up t h e regulaton regardng eslrays on the publc roads, and the explanaton was made that t "was entrely overlooked" Mght not the word ntentonally be used n place of entrely? The announcement s made that former Governor Carter wll shortly arrve on Kaua for the purpose of workng up enthusasm on the subect of the Progressve Party and organzng Progressve clubs We beleve that Mr Carter has a mstaken dea about beng "called" as the Moses to lead Kaua out of the wlderness t was probably one of our nght owls that he heard However, he wll be hosptably receved over here and wll be lstened to wth We thnk the school at Kapaa-uka-, the home- tor the beneft of steaders, should be establshed on the acre of land whch has been made avalable for that purpose Of course schools should have ample room for play - grounds, etc ; but n the case n pont there wll probably be very few chldren n attendance upon the school for years to come Under the crcumstances, therefore, we favor startng wth the acre and takng chances of gettng more, should the necessty arse, by condemnaton proceedngs or otherwse The vst of the All Students to Kaua around July Fourth was much apprecated, and t s hoped they enoyed the outng as much as dd Lhue Good, clean sport s the ambton of Kaua, and t s that type that the All Students put up A Portuguese complans to us that he has lost a small, snel horse We dont know anythng postve about the matter, but f he wll look n the weeds on the sdewalk between the Lhue bank and The Garden sland offce we thnk he wll stand a good shovof fndng the lost anmal T s REPORTKD from Mexco that they are usng cellulod poker chps n Vera Cruz for small cange w e nave Heard some rumors of poker chps beng used alsewhere for the same purpose before The Cvc Federaton has at last come to lfe, and has passed resolutons favorng the enlargement of Harbor The dredgers may now prrced to get up steam The Platform of the Lahn Party solemnly declares:" And to reveal that the law s for the poor and not for te rch" t s a pty there s not an open season for monkeys n Hawa Along wth the srcar mll re turns beatng the estmates comes the prospect of an excellent year for Rce Agrculturally and poltcally we seem to le mprovng t s probahy unfar to assume that the reason the supervsors persstently sde - step that estray ordnance s that they are afrad t may not "be enforced" Plmhng nspector Mehls-ten-, of, may have been ndscreet n some of hs dealng wth fshmarket Chnese, but hs worst fault, perhaps, s that he s a Republcan and holds a ob whch some Democrat wants Yor are all rght, All dents;
