7 THE GARDEN SLAND TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 94 THE GARDEN SLAN-D- WHY? 3y J. M. Lydgatk.) evdent from the followng. Tle Kaua has long been known as slroatnlcss areas.such as the Garden sland. As far back ns kala regon of t h e varous s we tnd ndchtons that t was already a well known ttle; and from that tme on t has receved an ever ncreasng recognton. suppose there mav well be an unwrtten law ol adverse possesson for reputaton, as well as property and that, perhaps, such long undsturbed possesson may, n tself, consttute a vald..ttle. But adverse possesson s the last resort of honest men, to be held Jw reserve, perhaps, but not to be flaunted as an easy substtute for a better ttle. Let us glance for a few moments at some of the ustfcatons for ths better ttle. A garden m cans these three thngs, at least sol, water supply and cultvaton. SOL. n a volcanc country, f not everywhere, sol s a queston of age, of the lapse of tme and the acton of the elements. A new la va flow, fresh from the caldron of nferno, wll not make a garden however favored otherwse. must dsntegrate, mellow, a n d soften through the ages. By common consent Kaua s the oldest sland of the group; perhaps t would be safer to sav 4he oldest fnshed sland. Who can say how old the core of Hawa may be as much older than Kaua, perhaps, as t s larger. That s nether here nor there, however. When "Nature scared the tace ot l c r fnshed work by lre, she wped out the score and started all over agan. Tha Kaua s comparatvely, speakng, very aged, s attested by ndcatons s o manfold, and so obvous, that they cannot escape even the most casural observaton Lava flows, those petrfed rvers of forbddng and n hosptable rock found on mosl of the other slands are wantng on Kaua. The process of eroson s much farther advanced on Kaua than elsewhere on the group. Ths s seen n deep er valleys, and sharper rdges n the nteror, where the turbulent streams through long ages have eaten down to the heart of the s land, leavng thn lamnated rdges between. To realze the vast ex tent of ths eroson, out need onlv recall the smooth unbroken dome of Mauna Loa, as compared wth the rent and furrowed slopes of vwaaleale. magne t h e untold ages that must elapse before Man na Loa becomes lke Waaleale! t s seen also n the broader val leys, and more rounded rdges to ward the sea coast, wth consder able areas of alluval sol, not only n the bottoms of wde-spreadn- g valleys, but also n lttoral plans such as are not to be found on new sland lke Hawa. t s seen also, n the more snuous, md the more sluggsh, flow of the larger streams near the mouth, so that n a few cases they become vertable rvers, small to be sure, yet the only rvers we have on the slands These are marks of the fnshng nrocess. And whle they do not mply a fnshed sland, bv any means, they do mply an sland far alone n ts hstory, and of very great age. WATER SUPPLY. By common consent Kaua s the best watered sland of the group, )whch n cans larger aggregate quantty and better dsrrbutou. The Hydrographc examnaton of the water supply of the slands s not suffcently complete to gve the aggregate stream-flo- w of tne varous slands wth any consder able degree of accuracy, but such data as there ndcate that the stream-flo- for the sland of Kaua s greater than for any other w sland of the group, not only on a pro rata bass accordng to the area, but that t s actually greater than of any other sland, ndependent of area. That t s more evenly or more generally dstrbuted wll be parallel, thn rdges, so sharp least only n the superfcal way, places that they can be travelled,m because of the open, park-lke-, only wth dffculty md danger. J wooded stretches of Kukt and oth! lands, are approxmately as follows: These rdges arc bathed n nos- - er trees whch reoced the eve. turc, to be sure, but the precpta--. Such grateful prospects were partc- - null. 3 V.U uat u.. larly to be enoyed n the neghborhood of Lhue. Keala, Molo-a- a run off s comparatvely small. Tlrs Kaua table-lan- n so large, and Klauea. A lngerng remnant, suggestve of what they d :nd the ranfall s so great, that a once HAWA sq, mles, out of 405 sq. mles, 80. MAU. 400 sq. mles, out of 728 sq. mle, 55. OAHU. 200 sq. mles, out of 598 sq. mles, 33. JLAUA. 90 sq. mles, out of 547 sq. mles, 6. Of course, streamless area does not always denote defcency of water supply. For example, the Puna dstrct on Hawa has no sngle flowng stream, though ts ranfall s excessve. Yet, as a rule, stream-flo- wll prove to bo a w very good practcal ndcaton of fertlty, snce regons whch ae not suffcently decomposed to r-ta- n water, are not suffcently de composed for the hghest degree of fertlty. RANFALL. The water supply s of course lrectly dependent o n ranfall. There are physcal reasons for the generous ranfall of Kaua whch t may be nterestng to note. t wlrbe evdent to the most casual observaton that elevaton las a good deal to do wth ranfall. For example compare the ranfall of Lhue wth that of Waaleale, only a few mles away, but several thousand feet hgher. The o w levels, especally when not backed by mountan heghts, are neglected by the clouds they ran-bearn- g slde over wthout any precpta ton; Wtness Nhau, West Molo ka, Lana snd Kahoolnwe. They do not run up far enough to reach the precptaton level. On th other hand, the hgh mountan peak s wreathed n clouds; and s exposed to constant precptaton for months at a stretch But tlere s an elevaton beyond whch ths works the other way. t s a famlar experence of even the most casual observer that ofte lmes when a ferce wnd s blowng be low, carvng the lvng scud of sweepng ran clouds, above there s the peace and calm of an ndan Summer. And when the noun tan clmber reades tns upper stratum of peace and calm he looks down on a vast stretch of swlug cloud ocean, wth mountan peaks rsng out of t lke slands. The tra le wnds are but a thn current clngng close tothe earth, a sort of aeral wet blanket, out of whch the ranfall comes. And.the larg est ranfall and the best supply of water come from the hgh elevaton of the traoe wnd stratum, ust below the upper lmt. Ths pro poston nav be substantated bv the followng record of ranfall tak en roughly along a drect lne from the sea to the top of Waaleale: Staton Elevaton ranfall Keala 5 ft. 40 n Kapah 300 " 59 " Hanahanapttn 900 " 90 " Pole Lne Dvde ll)00 " 55 " Pehuala 300 " 220 " Waaleale 5080 " 339 " At ths maxunn elevaton the fgures and the elevatons stop on Kaua, but records from the hgher elevatons of Hawa show that above ths level the precptaton falls off very rapdly. Now, the sgnfcant pont of ths nqury s the fact that Kaua, compared wtll phenomenal amount of waur s thrown off. t s n d that all ot the large streams of the sland take ther rse, and from hs regon that the Wamea, Hana- - pepc and Wanha, sprng Mnerva lke, full formed and! osterous, ndependent of farther accessons from the lower levels. Ths s why t s, and how t s, that Kaua s the best watered sland of t h c group. Furthermore, the physcal const tuton of the sland smu mportant factor o f the ranfall, A large mountan mass, runnng up to n hgh elevaton, such as Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, or Haleakala, presents an obstructon, or dam, to the trade wnd currents, so com plete as to create a monstrous eddy behnd, n whch, as a rule, there s a large ranless area. The hea vy ran clouds arc not able to bank-u-p and flow over the dam. Ths accounts for the lame ranless areas of Hawa and East Mau. On Oahu tlere s a secondary regon, the Kaala Range, but t s placed n the lec of the man Ko nahuanu range, wth a low-lyn- g legon nter evenng. The frst range takes the water out of the clouds and passes then on, com paratvely dry, to the second range. And a comparatvely large d r y area results. Kaua presents a mountan mass of such compact crcular form that t forms the least possble obstructon to the trade wnd current. The wnd draws around both sdes of the sland, leavng a very small lee, o wndless area Durng strong trades ths area s reduced to the were, s stll to be seen at Plaa. f these ha tul graves have ttnfor-nnatel- y gone, r nearly so. a deal of very grateful cultvaton has taken thet place. So that they can be no queston, the sland-present- s a greener and more tropcal aspect than t dd when the name to-da- Garden sland w a s frst gven. Wthout desrng n the least, to dscredt the appearance of the sl-a- n J n those-ol- days, there ran be no doubt that broad slrelehs of the lower lands presented the most unattractve, uo to say forbddng, aspect of,barreu and rocky sterlty. Phc whole-rego- n from Koloa to Mans, wthn the memory of some, of you have today, practcally a barren, nhosptable wlderness of rock, red dust and fervd heat, and to a less extent the same thng was true of other low land sectons. rrgaton :uul cultvaton, have turned these barren wastes nto smlng gardens. Whle the Kukt groves have mostly been des-toyethey have been much more than replaced by the great areas ol cane that have added so greatly to the sland. Tnough the orgnal ndgenous forests have undoubtedly suffered much at the hands of cvlzaton, stll a good deal has been done to offset ths nury n the lne of renewal, both by natural and artfcal means. T h e algaroha, as elsewhere on the lee sde of the slands, has proved a very grateful addton to the landscape, as well as a consderable source of proft. The plantaton companes, as well as publc sprted ndvduals, have planted consderable areas to for regon lyng between Polhale and est; the road ways arc beng lned Kalalau or lanakoa a dstance of up by trees, nooks and dells and only 0 to 2 mles, and that s banks of strategc sgnfcance only on the shore; over-hea- d n have blossomed nto beauty under the mountans, a short dstance the artstc touch.
