Offce next to Bank of Hawa, Ltd. The steamshp Cty of Columba sold at publc aucton today at noon for the sum of $,500 cash. Ths seems remarkable. No one expected the vessel would go so low. But n the bg crowd that attended the aucton there were but two bdders three bds. Captan Harry Evans, of the water front polce, bought the greyhound. Just what he wll do wth her he hmself does not know. He bd for luck, to make the other fellows come up, as t were, got the shp. Auctoneer Morgan sold the vessel. After a wat of fve mnutes Evans offered $500. Someone over n the crowd shouted $,000, Evans rased t to $,500. There was a long wat, Mr. Morgan dd lots of talkng, but the prce was not advanced. At last the Seattle-Hll- o poneer lner was knocked down. The prce pad s smply out of reason. t was stated by shppng men present that Evans wll got hs money back out of materal on the decks of the vessel. To tear her up he wll clear $3,000 or $4,000. Just before the Columbn started n the Hllo trade $40,000 was spent n mprovements on her. She s fnely ft ted up. t s estmated that she would bo worth $C0,000 to $80,000 f on a good coast lne.. The blls aganst the Columba wll foot up somethng lke $25,000. Of ths amount nearly $900 s due the polce department, whch, of course, must come out of the sale money. Attorneys fees are somethng lke $,000 more. t s clear that the salors who have clams for wages n varous amounts, wll get nothng. Only n few of them reman n the country. Ths s next to the cheapest sale of a steamshp ever heard of n ths coun try, once the bg Chna nrougnt nve shllngs. That fact should at least be comfort to those holdng clams aganst the Columba. Late ths afternoon Harry Evans stated that he had been offered $9,000 for the Columba. Ths, he sad, he would not accept, f he could not get a consderable ndvajre on the fgure he would break up the vessel. FRST LEUTENANT HOWELL. Second Leutenant W. E. Commer Taussg entered upon the dutes assgned hm wth enthusasm. One of hs frst deas was to take the seeds of useful trees plants from here to plant there, as a means of ncreasng the natural resources of the sl. He nterested --Major. A. Bartlett n the matter of procurng the necessary seed. But as the matter was further consdered, t was suggested by Major Bartlett that nstead of seed, young trees should be taken. Ths wns adopted. Commssoner Clark n the plan the government furnshed the materal. Major Bartlett procured n number of boxes of sutable sze n these the lttle trees rangng from sx nches to a foot n heght were planted. The selecton embraced the followng varetes: Mangoes, date palms, monkey pods, tamarnds, slver oaks, Ponclanna Re-gl- a or Flame trees nlgarobas. n nl, about,000 young trees were taken ulong. t was the ntenton of Commer Taussg to plant some of these trees on Wake sl f opportunty offered. But n hs letter to Major Bartlett he says: "Beyond scatterng a few seeds around Wake sl, my tme wns too mucl taken up durng our bref stay there on the 7th of January, when took possesson of the sl, to do more as an agrculturalst." No doubt the plantng of the trees taken was one of the lrst thngs attended to after reachng Guam transactng the necessary prelmnary formaltes of takng posesslon. So that though called away so much sooner that he expected to be. Commer Taussg has doubtless that to hs credt whch a dstngushed poltcal economst has declared to be the most useful achevement possble for a man. that of makng two blades of grass to grow where but one grew be fore. When people about the sls wj-lt- they should get up ther facts more accurately than s. usually the custom, nnd then perhaps we should not have such a lot of nonsense fosted upon the readng publc as s the habt now. A revew n another column shows the latest development n ths drecton. One mght almost classfy ths as the French style, for t was ether Dumos or Vctor Hugo who placed Buckngham Palace on one sde of Trafalgar Square the Houses of Parlament on the other. An author who, wrtng of the rasng of the Amercan Hag on the Executve buldng on August 2th last, says: "t was the same place whch had wtnessed the uprsng n behalf of Queen Emma the proclamaton of the accesson of Kng," both of whch occurred at what s now Hackfelds store, follows pretty closely hs Gallc prototypes. But then those gentlemen frankly wrote fcton, not fcttous slpshod hstory. Upon the other sls the Chnese New Year seems to have developed a seres of small rows. n Honolulu the holday passed oft quetly enough. t may not be amss to nqure whether the country polce some of the deputy sherffs are not n fault. The Chnese at ths partcular perod of the year should be treated wth a lght h, f they are arrested at ths season for what they consder venal offenses. t s not surprsng that even the usually complacent obedent wll, lke the worm, turn. Any one who has traveled much round the sls, knows how certan offcals, dressed n a lttle bref authorty, lke to ar t on all occasons, proper mproper. Of course when the Chnese attacked the jal n Kau they were dstnctly n the wrong, but one would lke to know the crcumstances whch led them to placng themselves n the wrong. else s fallacous, that other places have them as cheap cheaper. Moreover ther servce s clamed to ho much better than ours. ADVANCNG. The Amercan, when he undertake! to do a thng, does t thoroughly above all, quckly. Ths the people of the newly acqured terrtory wll quckly learn. He takes hs trade hs dollars along wth hm, whle the old stylo Spanard would be dream-ln- g of what mght be done durng the course of the next century, the Amercan does t, the wlderness s turned nto a busy mart, whle the vacant ls are flled wth the busy hum of machnery ndustry. Every one helps, too. Take the case of Captan Taussg of the Bennngton. He was ordered to Guam, to take charge of the sl, he was also nstructed to survey Wnke sl. On account of the weather he was unable to stay very long on "Wake sl, but ho had the foresght to supply hmself wth algaroba seeds whle here, knowng that the tree wll grow n ard stony places, ho scattered them, or had them scattered, n varl ous parts of the sl. These wll no doubt grow supply the barren spots wth shade. To Guam Captan Taussg has taken n large amount of seeds plants from Hawa. These wll be, or rather have been, dstrbuted, though some may be already there, a large amount wll prove to be new, wll soon add to the agrcultural output of the sl. t wll not be long before the merchant wll follow n the tran of the man of war, wll be wakng the steeply hollow of Guam wth hs ener gy push. New goods wll be follow ed by new trades, the nhabtants wll soon get out of the "Manana" style of dong thngs get a hustle on. n fact t wll be gettng out of the nursery stage nto the true battle of lfe wth ts thous one advantages as aganst the vegetable exstence whch the Spanard fostered. Of course the change wll be somewhat of a wrench, the old wll not lke t, but the Anglo-Saxo- n cvlzaton s one that cannot keep stll t carres everythng along wth t. MEMORAL, MEETNG. At any rate the bblography about the sls keeps ncreasng one has to rend assduously to keep up wth t. Tho lntest contrbuton to the stock s enttled "Amerca n Hawa," by Edmund Jnnes Cnrpenter. s publshed by Small. Maynard & Co., Boston, who hnve done the typographcal part of the work well. The author has h readng knowledge of the sls. The object of Mr. carpenter s to trace the connecton of the sls wth the Unted States to show thnt the annexaton of the sls last year was the outgrowth of a seres cf events whch dnte back sxty or seven- - ty years. Such u subject could be well hled, argued wth plenty tf materal to support tlu thess. A few extracts may bo cted n support of ths crtcsm. Some of the mstakes are, t s true, trval, but a wrter who sets up to gve an hstorcal account says hs statements are "for the future gudance" of the hstoran of half a century hence, has no tuoltada p. tn.v Jnvn ạnpl. nlnhlf nffatnto. - - n.... n lt... Page 3. Of saac Davlcs John Young t s sad: "Ther memores are stll chershed by the lawallans." t would be safe to bet a largo sum that the average Hawaan does not even know who Davles nnd Young are. Ths s a gem of accuracy. The corner stone of the Queens Hosptal wan lad bv Kamehumeha V on July 7, SC", nnd the buldng was completed n December of the same year! Of course t s a pretty sentence whch s wrtten, f t dd not happen, why t ought, Carpenter s not afrad to Htate t n spte of whatever Alexers hlstoy mght say. On Page 39 et sequllur there s a lllght of magnaton about the law tlocks of wld cattle, goats sheep whch attracted settlers from the whaleshlps, who gathered the products of the rop.mlng herds for mercantle purposes whle watng shps carred them to Amercan markets. t s almost needless to pont out other errors of ths, class, but they abound. The Roman Catholc prests who led here are descrbed ns Jesuts, when they were nothng of the knd, but belonged to the Order of th" Sacred Heart, a fact whch Professor Alexer dstnctly states on page 2K of hs hstory. Dr. Perrt P. Judd. whom certanly a Boston man mght have been supposed to know somethng about, appears on page 78 as Dr. George P. Judd, on page 94 as George R. Judd. Evdently a dfferent person n the mnd of ths "accurate author. That Consul Charltons name should be msspelled "Charleton" on pages 0 69 correctly on pages 77 nnd 79, whle t appears ncorrectly n the ndex, s not a thng to be surprsed at. But when recent events are reached, tho errors become more glarng. The descrpton of the court house rot on the electon of Knlakaua s very ncorrect. The lng of the Tenados salors marnes beng asserted to have been "wthout request from the authortes,", "t s sad, ndeed wthout orders from the ofllcers of the shp." Ths wll not satsfy the admnstraton. No mnkeslnfts expedent wll be nccepted. The presdent has determned that the passage of the army bll shall be made an ssue, there s no doubt n admnstraton crcles that he wll be successful. f, however, an obstacle should prevent acton an extra sesson wll surely be held. The condtons whch have arsen leave no other course to le pursued by the presdent. A decson was yesterday rendered by the attorney general to the effect that as soon as the ratfcatons of the peace treaty are exchanged the volunteers can no longer bo retaned n servce. Ths s nlso true, the attorney general holds, of the addtonal regulars who were enlsted for the war wth Span.
