The palace of the Sultan of Zanzbar was bombarded ths mornng and at noon was a mass of blazng runs. The usurpng cheftan, Sad Khald, and the commander of hs forces, Sad Sales, escaped to the German Consulate, where they reman under the protecton of the German flag. Rear-Admr- al Henry Rawson, C. B., n command of the Brtsh Cape of Good nope and West Coast Afrca staton, and the Consul-Genera- l, Brtsh A. H. Hardng, after holdng a conference yesterday, communcated by cable to the Government of Great Brtan that Sad Khald, who had sezed the palace and proclamed hmself Sultan on. the death, apparently by poson, of Sultan Hamd bn Thwan bn Sad, re-enforhad been strongly and postvely refused to surrender. Sad Khald had wth hm about 2500 well-arme- d and well-dscpln- ed men, ncludng 900 Askars. traned under Brtsh offcers, plenty of ammunton, and feld guns and other peces of artllery whch were traned on the Brtsh war shps, the flagshp St. George, the thrd-clas- s cruser Phlomer, the thrd-clas- s cruser Raccoon, the frst-cla- ss gunboats Sparrow and Thrush. - ARMEXAX HORRORS. Turks ndulge n Another Terrble Massacre. LONDON. August 29. A dspatch to the Daly News from Constantnople says that on Thursday t was estmated that from 3000 to 4000 persons had been klled n the rots n the dfferent portons of the cty. All Europeans en route for ths cty have been turned back by the cordons of troops occupyng the publc places, the wharves and brdges. The whole thng could have been stopped n an hour f the Government had desred, but the members of the mob pretend to have receved permsson to loot, burn and destroy the Armenan quarters for a certan perod of tme. t s feared that there wll be serous trouble n the provnces. X- TWA8 AGANST THE POWERS. Armenans Eplan AVhy They Attacked the BanJc. CONSTANTNOPLE. August 28 The Mnstry of Polce has apponted a commsson of eght Chrstans and eght Mussulmans to nqure nto the revolutonary rotng on Wednesday. The offcals of the Brtsh Postoffce were vrtually prsoners untl nght, and the mal was not dspatched. The Brtsh Charge d'affares, Mchael Herbert, telegraph to Tewfk Pasha, the Turksh Mnster for Foregn Affars, urgng the prompt restoraton of order. t also appears that whle the Ottoman Bank was beng attacked crculars were delvered at the dfferent embasses sgned by the Armenan revolutonary commttee, declarng that they ntended to seze the bank and hold t for two days, durng whch tme they wanted the powers to actvely ntervene n the settlement of the Armenan queston, and addng, that f the authortes tred to recapture the bank they would blow t up wth all ts securtes. Mr. Vncent went to the palace yesterday evenng to see.-.- e Sultan, and whle he was there a message was receved from the revolutonsts sayng that they were wllng to surrender on condton that they were allowed to leave the country. Mr. Vncent accordngly returned to the bank and parleyed wth the leaders of the Armenans through the wndows. The Armenans had revolvers n ther hands, and told hm they held two of the drectors and a number of employes of the bank as hostages, and that they had sezed the bank n order to create a demonstraton, not aganst the Turks nor the banks, but aganst the powers, who had abandoned the Armenans. They added that they had selected the Ottoman Bank because t was the most sutable place, and epressed ther wllngness to surrender provded they were allowed to retan the revolvers whle yeldng up the bombs n ther possesson and recevng safe conduct out of tne country. These terms were agreed upon, and the Armenans surrendered last nght and were conveyed on board Vncent's yacht Gulnare. ADMRAL. HAWSOX'S REPORT. ssued Ultmatum and Proceeded to Bombard the Enemy. LONDON. August 27 A dspatch receved from Admral Rawson, dated Zanzbar, 2:45 P. M. to-da- y, says: "ssued an ultmatum at 7 o'clock ths mornng callng upon the usurper to haul down hs flag and surrender to me and drectng, hs followers to ple ther arms and leave the place before 9 o'clock, otherwse t would be bombarded. nstead of complyng he commenced ncreasng hs fortfcatons, and hs corvette traned her guns on my squadron. opened fre at 9 o'clock on the palace and on the corvette, whch promptly repled. ceased frng at 9:40, when the corvette was sunk and all the guns were slenced, and the usurper yelded to the German Consul. Hamound has been apponted Sultan. "The enemy's loss was heavy. Only a petty offcer of the gunboat Thrush was wounded." Much regret s epressed that Colonal Secretary Chamberlan saled for New York yesterday, snce n Parlament he had warmly espoused the abolton of slavery n Zanzbar, and hs nfluence would now be eerted to fnally put an end to Arab rule. f an Englsh protectorate s publshed the control of the Sultanate wll be transferred to the Colonal Department. X- Jrltlsh Press Comment. LONDON, August 2. Almost all of the daly papers ths mornng contan comments upon the stuaton n Zanzbar. WASHNGTON, Aug. 26. n regard to the dsposton of Kate Feld's body, now lyng at Honolulu, John Bowles of ths cty, a personal frend of the dead authoress, wrtes: "The last tme met her our conversaton rounded up on the phlosophy, wsdom and justce of crematon. "So there s no doubt n my mnd, when Kate Feld's wll turns up, there wll be found a clause provdng for gvng back to mother nature that part of the pershable garments wth whch she clothes all her chldren, the process of crematon." - K ATE FELD'S ESTATE. through Collector Apponted to Take Change of Her Effect;. He wanted to know whether there would be a great publc demonstraton, and whether the Presdent had a palace on Governor's sland or n New York to receve hm, and was very much surprsed that no great appropratons had been made to receve hm, and that no palace ested n our country such as HUNG CHANG. he had known n other countres, and that the recepton accorded hm would be n keepng wth the smple deas of a republc. Hs Party For Bmetalsm-Fr- ee Trade Caused Fnancal Downfall- - Favors Recprocty and Restrcted mmgraton, Etc. CANTON, Oho, Aug. 26. Governor McKn ley's letter of acceptance was made publc today. The Republcan canddate devotes about half hs letter to pontng out the fallaces of the free slver movement, demonstratng the mpossblty of keepng slver on a party wth gold by declaraton of the Unted States Government. He says: "Bmetallsm cannot be secured by ndependent acton on our part. t cannot be obtaned by openng our mnts to the unlmted conage of the slver of the world, at a rato of 6 ounces of slver to of gold, when the commercal rato s more than 30 ounces of slver to ounce of gold. Meco and Chna have tred the eperment. Meco has free conage of slver and gold at a rato slghtly n ecess of 6 ounces of slver to ounce of gold, and whle her mnts are freely open to both metals at that rato, not a sngle dollar n gold bullon s coned and crculated as money. Gold has been drven out of crculaton n these countres and they are on a slver bass alone. Untl an nternatonal agreement s had t s the plan duty of the Unted States to mantan the gold standard. t s the recognzed and sole standard of the great commercal natons of the world, wth whch we trade more largely than any other. Eghty-fou- r per cent of our foregn trade for the fscal year of 895 was wth gold standard countres, and and our trade wth other countres was settled on a gold bass. "The Republcan party has not been and s not now opposed to tte use of slver money, as ts record abundantly shows. t has done all that could be done for ts ncreased use wth safety and honor by the Unted States, actng nn:rt from other governments. There are those who thnk t has already gone beyond the lmt of fnancal prudence. Surely we can go no further, and we must not permt false lghts to lure us across the danger lne. "An ssue of supreme mportance s that of protecton. The perl of free slver s a menace to be feared; we are already eperencng the effect of partal free trade. The one must be averted, the other corrected." The prosperous perod from 890 to S92 s noted and the panc of 893 s attrbuted to the free trade polcy of the Democratc party. t s not ncrease n the volume of money whch s the need of the tme, but an ncrease n the volume of busness. Not an ncrease of conage, but an ncrease of confdence; not more conage, but a more actve use of the money coned; not open mnts for the unlmted conage of the slver of the world, but open mlls for the full and nnrpr Vtpl nbor of Amercan work men. The employment of our mnts for the conage of the slver of the world would not brng the necessares and comforts of lfe back to our people. Ths wll only come wth the employment of the masses, and such employment s certan to follow the of a wse protectve polcy whch wll encourage manufacturng at home. Protecton has lost none ot ts vrtue and mportance." M( Knley declares aganst unrestrcted mmgraton, favors recprocty, pensons, etended cvl servce reform and protecton of the merchant marne. n closng he congratulates tne country on the declne of sectonalsm. Fer-nand- es At about 2:5 Sunday mornng and others were out to the Fer j tlzer Works n Kalh and there cap J tared a number of Japanese gamblers. Smth & Co., agents for the Hawaan slands. Crude Methods of Early Ages Bblcal Reference to the Post Begnnng of What Has Become an Almost Perfect and a Cheap System. t seems almost ncredble, n vew of the wonderful labyrnth of postal roun. all ovf the world today, that there ever r could have been a tme when there were no postoffces, no letter carrer, no mal facltes at all. But, of course, there had to be some means of communcaton even n the earlest ages, though these were confned for centures to emperors and kngs and other great rulers. The emperors of Egypt, of Persa, of Assyra and of Rome held many lesser kngs and satraps as ther vassals. Wth these t was necessary to communcate wth certanty and regularty, and therefore courers were employed to carry dspatches and reports to and from the more dstant provnces. Of course no one man or one norse could traverse the whole route, so statons were establshed along the roads at certan ntervals, where courers were always n readness to releve weary brothers, and carry on the dspatches wth unform speed. These statons were called "posts," from the Latn word posrum fed or placed whence comes the name of our modern postal system. n the Old Testament are frequent references to the posts. u Chroncles you wll fud, "So the posts went wth the letters," and "So the posts passed Lmted. But they were BARS, CARRAGE SPRNGS, never for the use of the common people. qrates S PAPER, The Roman Emperor Augustus was the frst to establsh a system of posts suggestve of the present system. You have heard the sayng, "All roads lead to Rome." Ths was the orgn ot t: From Rome as a center post roads were bult, called "royal hghways, " etend ng all over Europe. After the declne of the Roman empre these post roads were abandoned by degrees, and durng the dark ages they almost entrely dsappeared. n the thrteenth and fourteenth cen tures, however, ther need began to be so strongly felt that posts between dt- - establsh these were etend- - ed nto other countres. These posts were carru.l frst by foot runners and then a lttle later by men on horseback. t was not long, though, before the post prvlege was etended, and t was found mpossble for horseback rders to carry the ncreasng rnaj, so wheeled conveyances were provded, and the net step was for these conveyances to carry passengers as well as the mal And thus from the post was evolved the mal coach. What ths meant to our htherto shut n ancestors t s hard for us of the present day to realze even fantly. But t s safe to say that the evoluton of the publc post and the mal coach dd more than any other one thng to hasten cvlzaton. n the regn of the Emperor Freder ck, Francs von Las, whose grand father s sad to have establshed a post al servce across the Tyrol and Styra, entered the servce of the house of Haps burg and became the founder of the modem postal system. Through Von Las the emperor establshed regulav posts throughout hs kngdom between the years 440 and 4!)., and at tne oe- - gnnng of the steenth century the Austran post became the nternatonal nost of the Hapsburg dynasty n France the Unversty of Pars or ganzed a postal servce n the thrteenth century whch flourshed untl 79. n some parts of Europe there were brother hoods and mercantle gulds whch es tablshed posts and postoffces subject to the government n England, n 653, Rowland Hll Qfawtorl a nrvate Dost, but CromwelUs heavy hand came down on the enter- - prse, and the men who carred tne let tors were trampled down and klled by he aoldors Later on Mr. Hll came to the front agan, nsttuted many re forms u the servce, and at last gave to England a real and effectve postal servce. Lous X of France founded a postal system n 464, whch was greatly n-drov- ed bv Charles X n 565. But t was not alone the Chrstan natons that felt the need of a postal servce. When the Sp mards nvaded South Amerca, they found a regular system of posts n operaton, so that the news of ther landng was carred to the nca wth ncredble swftness, the post men beng runners, who carred around ther wasts knotted cords, a code ot sg nals or sgn wrtng Comng down to our own country. cnnro wa trte, a Deep at the mal methods n vogue n ts earler days Let ns take as a type the postal servce between Boston and New York, where, n 762, a post was establshed "to goe monthlv. " Post rders, startng at the same hour from each end of the route, carred the mals. Leavng on Monday mornng, they met and echanged bags at Saybrook, Conn., on the followng Saturdav. Then each man returned to hs startue oont, whch, of course, too nearj Tt a TVn-rum- n v rank m tnat, m 775, suggested the plan for a postal servce on whch our present system s founded. n the early days of ths sys tem rates were charged that seem out rageous to us of the present day be tween Boston and New ork, 8 cents, and 25 cents for ponts beyond. Of course ths led to swndlng the government and the smugglng of letters. Prvate partes carred mal s.cretly at lower rates, and n 839 Harnden s epress entered the feld, carryng letters concealed n bundles and other packages at less than legal rates. But as soon as the government lowered ts charges all these smugglers drpped out of the race. There was no money n t then. Phladelpha Tmes. WRAPPNG PAPER, WHEEL BARROWS, TRUCKS, 3000 YDS. Kaapun, accompaned by followed after, and the former tred to stop the anmal by drvng hs horse so as to step on the rope draggng from the cow's neck. Ths dd not delay Pacheco. who drove hs cow nto the pen. The offcer agan demanded the etra dollar and the rope on the cow s neck. When Pacheco returned ths rope a second shot was fred, whereupon he made a lunge at Kaapun wth hs whp, and the thrd shot followed, whch caused the fatal wound. Pacheco got on hs horse and tred to dsmount at hs gate, but fell to the ground. Kaapun rode down the street, and as he was gong away a Portuguese met hm and threw a stone at hm, whch was returned by another shot from the revolver. M. C. Pacheco says that hs father had been drnkng a lttle, but he was not drunk. He also says there was not a crowd of Portuguese around at the tme, as almost all the men n the vcnty were away from home at work. There were many women and chldren around, but they scattered when the shootng began. The son was away at the tme, beng employed n Robert Greve s prntng offce. THE FUNERAL. The funeral of the late J. Perhaps the most nterestng feature s the promnence whch he gves the money problem and hs demonstraton of the fact that free slver s by no means the great panacea for the fnancal woes of the Amercan common people. Hs letter also ndcates that the Republcans fnd they cannot make the campagn fght on the tarff as was undoubtedly ther desre and frst ntenton to do. The slver craze has assumed such shape that t s mpossble to avod t. McKnley's letter whch s practcally an address to the people shows conclusvely so-call- ed that the 'crme of 873'' had lttle or nothng to do wth the fnancal troubles of 893 and the depresson n trade that has followed snce that tme. t also demonstrates the mpossblty of keepng slver at par wth gold by the smple declaraton by the government that a gven number of grans of slver shall have the value of one dollar. As mght be epected MeKnley attrbutes the fnancal depresson to the departure from the protectve polcy whch gave to the Unted States the most prosperous years ever eperenced. Whle there s chance for a wde dversty of opnon on ths pont, t s certan that a protectve polcy and the contnuance of the present monetary standard wll do more to brng about a return to former prosperty than wll the free and unlmted conage of slver ajm a further reducton of Amercan tarffs. f, when the Dem Fnancal Agents GUARANTEED Sept. 2, 896.
