1 ORDER OF WORSHIP Sunday, October 12, 201 9:00 am and 11:30 am graceseattle.org

2 LEVITICUS: HOLY GOD, HOLY PEOPLE "Full humanity is humanity united to God, communion with God." J. Todd Billgs, Union with Christ Jewish children used to beg ir synagogue education by studyg book Leviticus. For many us, this seems unimagable and possibly even unkd. Of all places Bible to start, why world would you beg with Leviticus? In fact, Leviticus seems like it should be last place Bible we should turn. One shrewd observer wryly poted out that "Leviticus ten becomes that graveyard where readthroughbibleayear plans go to die." Truth be told, Leviticus is ten tedious and cumbersome. It reads more like an struction manual than a novel. Furrmore, Leviticus is seemgly irrelevant to our lives. What good does it do us to know about outdated religious practices, arcane rituals related to sk diseases, and wher or not we should eat shellfish? Surely re are better ways to spend our tellectual and spiritual energies. But, we neglect Leviticus to our peril. As we will see, burden book is relational. Leviticus lays out a blueprt that gives us shape and texture what our lives look like when lived out union with God. One most significant statements Leviticus is this one: You shall be holy to me, for I Lord am holy and have separated you from peoples, that you should be me. (Leviticus 20:26) This speaks God's holess, which is anor way speakg about how God is different than us or "set apart" from us. How are we to be joed to this God who is so fundamentally "or"? And, once we are relationship with him, how do we live out this union and express our love and loyalty to God? In or words, how do we beg to reflect his holess to world? These are ma concerns this rich book. Fally, it is important to know that Leviticus is a blueprt. As a blueprt, it is not fished product. As we shall see throughout book, beautiful image silhouetted Leviticus is fulfilled through person and work Jesus Christ. We are now beg vited to live to Christfulfilled reality pencil sketches we fd Leviticus. Let us worship! 3 To pollute is to weaken a particular whole entity, such as a sound relationship, by troducg to it a foreign element...the image pollution suggests brgg toger what ought to be kept apart. To pollute soil, air, or water is to blend to m foreign materials mache oil, for example so that se natural resources no longer nourish or delight very well. Similarly, troduction a third lover to a marriage or an idol to natural human relation to God adds a foreign agent to m; it corrupts se entities by addition. Cornelius Plantga, Jr., Not Way It's Supposed to Be: A Breviary S "We leave a sta, we leave a trail, we leave our imprt. Impurity, cruelty, abuse, error, excrement re's no or way to be here.it s everyone. Indwellg. Inherent. Defg. The sta that is re before its mark. Without sign it is re. The sta so trsic it doesn't require a mark. The sta that precedes disobedience, that encompasses disobedience and perplexes all explanation and understandg. It's why all cleansg is a joke. A barbaric joke at that. The fantasy purity is appallg. It's sane. What is quest to purify, if not more impurity? The sta is escapable." Phillip Roth, The Human Sta "Foul, I, to founta fly. Wash me, Savior, or I die." Augustus Toplady, Rock Ages Therefore, brors and sisters, sce we have confidence to enter holy places by blood Jesus, by new and livg way that he opened for us through curta, that is, through his flesh, and sce we have a great priest over house God, let us draw near with a true heart full assurance faith, with our hearts sprkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 6 Lectio Sacra means sacred readg. It has been practice church for thousands years to have portions bible read durg worship services. The assumption behd this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all God s word. LECTIO SACRA Hebrews 9:1927 For when every commandment law had been declared by Moses to all people, he took blood calves and goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprkled both book itself and all people, sayg, This is blood covenant that God commanded for you. And same way he sprkled with blood both tent and all vessels used worship. Indeed, under law almost everythg is purified with blood, and without sheddg blood re is no forgiveness ss. Thus it was necessary for copies heavenly thgs to be purified with se rites, but heavenly thgs mselves with better sacrifices than se. For Christ has entered, not to holy places made with hands, which are copies true thgs, but to heaven itself, now to appear presence God on our behalf. Nor was it to fer himself repeatedly, as high priest enters holy places every year with blood not his own, for n he would have had to suffer repeatedly sce foundation world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at end ages to put away s by sacrifice himself. And just as it is appoted for all people to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, havg been fered once to bear ss many, will appear a second time, not to deal with s but to save those who are eagerly waitg for him. The word Lord! Thanks be to God! Musical terludes are cluded our service order to provide space for reflection and worship. INTERLUDE "Propitiation" (some translations read "atong sacrifice") means a sacrifice that satisfies God's just and righteous anger toward s. ENCOURAGEMENT TO CONFESS I John 2:12 My little children, I am writg se thgs to you so that you may not s. But if anyone does s, we have an advocate with Far, Jesus Christ righteous. He is propitiation for our ss, and not for ours only but also for ss whole world. O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 2

7 CONFESSION OF SIN Far heaven, forgives us for our ss. S T A N D I N G Our ss have straed and blocked our connection with you. Our hearts have become polluted and spoiled. We have grieved your Spirit with our rebellious ways. Confession s happens with context relationship, both with God and each or. We confess toger, community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance Christ. We jo with our bror David prayg: Create us clean hearts, O God. Cast us not away from your presence. Restore unto us, joy our salvation. And renew a steadfast spirit with us. (You are vited to confess your ss silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE Adapted from Ephesians 2:6 In name Christ and by authority his word I declare to you that God, beg rich mercy, because His great love with which He loved you, even when you were dead your transgressions, has made you alive toger with Christ and raised you up with Him, and has seated you with Him heavenly places. Your ss are forgiven. Amen! May peace Christ be with you! And also with you! Both we and our fars have sned; we have committed iquity; we have done wickedness. They made a calf Horeb and worshiped a metal image. They exchanged glory God for image an ox that eats grass. 19 C U L T I V A T E Gospel Life Livg life and believg gospel 21st century can be just pla weird. At times our culture seems so far removed from gospel that our faith seems irrelevant. We are tempted to slk to relative obscurity or fight to mata our footg. Often gospel hope seems powerless to change our daily lives, much less to shape our culture. But exact opposite is true! The gospel, story God redeemg His creation, give us love, hope, and passion we need to truly love each or well, to work with passion, and to be a part a flourishg city. Gospel Life, by Tim Keller, is an eightweek videobased study gospel and how to live it out everyday life. In week one we will study city, our home now, world that is. Week eight closes with me eternal city, our heavenly home, world that is to come. In between we will learn how gospel can change your heart, your community, and how you live this world.
