However, He did promise that if we put Him first in all things, He will provide all that we need. Through our daily decisions we have the opportunity to generously share our gifts and help those who may not be in position to help themselves. 3 hen a death occurs, a W number of events, both practical and spiritual, follow. Planning some of the liturgical details in advance can be a gift to the bereaved. A Catholic funeral is prayer. Let your parish staff help in the beforehand preparations. They can be an asset with decisions on scriptures, music, and musicians. The Rite of Christian Burial is one liturgy with three distinctive rituals: the vigil, funeral Mass, and burial. The vigil and Mass take place at the church, as it is the primary location where the faithful encounter God s grace. Funeral homes will offer their chapels, but our parishes are our spiritual homes. The vigil is structured as a Liturgy of the Word. The community gathers to hear good news in the midst of death s sadness. The service is ecumenical, with all able to participate in praying the psalms, scriptures, and intercessions. Some communities have the custom of praying the Rosary. If this worthy prayer is included, it should not replace the vigil service. For the funeral Mass, the family can choose readings from the Lectionary options for the dead. The funeral liturgy prays for the soul of the deceased and seeks to minister to the grieving. Family or friends can serve in ministerial capacities of lector, altar server, or extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, though they should not feel obligated to fill these roles. Parishes will welcome those who offer their talents and provide ministers when there is need. Unlike the readings, there is no set music repertoire for funerals. Consider music that is sung regularly on Sunday. Every week we celebrate Christ s death and triumph into new life. Using familiar songs, hymns, and chants will aid the assembly in participating and Darren Henson, STL offering their voice to the ritual. Voice your music preferences, while allowing your local parish musician to guide you. Musical abilities and repertoire vary among parishes. Finally, let the liturgy be primary. The prayers, the scriptures, and the psalms cover the range of emotions that accompany death. Ultimately, the liturgy unites us with Christ Jesus, who suffered death and rose from it, making it holy and glorious for all who follow him. Darren M. 4 The St. Luke Men s Club Golf Outing a 79-year tradition in the parish was held on Friday, September 19, at Maple Meadows in Wood Dale. The clear, sunny day was a perfect backdrop for this annual community-builder, and 80 golfers enjoyed their circuit before heading for the clubhouse for a well-deserved dinner and a lively raffle drawing. After a couple of poor weather years we hit the jackpot this year. It was an absolutely beautiful day as long as you didn t watch some of the swings! Several long-time attendees unfortunately couldn t make it this year, but there were also several newcomers. A great group, lots of fun and lots of laughs for everyone. The annual St. Luke Ministry Fair drew a crowd on Sunday, September 21, outside on Lake Street as the sun traded places with threatening storm clouds. Representatives from over two dozen ministries provided information on their groups, how they can assist parishioners and how parishioners can get involved with the ministry of their choice. This year s Ministry Fair proved once again that the parish community is strong, and many are willing to share of their God-given time and talent. When people get involved, it s good for the parish and it s good for the volunteer. The blessings just keep multiplying, said Fr. Ken. 5 St. Luke Parish gave a warm welcome to Teresita Gonzalez on the weekend of August as she told us about the missionary work of Amor En Accion in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The special second collation brought in $5,986 which has been forwarded to this missionary group. Thanks for your support, and let us keep these missionaries and the people they serve in our prayers. If you or someone you know is feeling called to join the Catholic Church, to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and/or Confirmation, or simply to grow in your understanding of the faith, our parish invites you to participate in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. This process involves regular meetings over the next eight months, culminating at the Easter Vigil next April. Through this process the Church welcomes converts into our community and provides baptized Catholics an opportunity to return to more active participation in the Church or to learn more about the Catholic faith. The honoree is someone, chosen by the pastor with the advice of the Parish Pastoral Council, who has demonstrated by participation in parish life the personal and ministerial renewal called for by the Papal Exhortation Christifideles Laici, calling the laity to the vocation of responsibility for the Church s life springing from the gifts and mission of their baptism. Our honoree from St. Luke this year is Denise Murray. She will receive the award from Cardinal George personally at a special ceremony at the Cathedral on October 26. Congratulations to you, Denise. And thanks for the example you provide us as you live your faith and put it into action for others. The Respect Life Committee will distribute the Aid for Women baby bottles at all the Masses during the Respect Life Sunday Weekend next weekend October 4 and 5. Thank you for taking a bottle and filling it with your loose change during October, which is Respect Life Month. For 35 years, Aid for Women has empowered women to choose life for themselves and their babies. As an affiliate of Catholic Charities of Chicago, Aid for Women provides a vast array of services to abortion-vulnerable women in need of counseling, pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, health insurance, baby items and furniture, food, clothing and transportation. Aid for Women mentors women throughout their pregnancies, encouraging them to keep up with their prenatal care, attend classes, and develop a plan for their own future and that of their child. It charges no fee for services and relies solely on the generosity of individuals and foundations to continue their vital presence as the only pregnancy resource center in downtown Chicago, as well as a location in Berwyn. 7 On September 15, seminarian Guillermo Treviño gave the Prime Timers a special behind-the-scenes tour of Mundelein Seminary. This is where students from Chicago and more than 30 other dioceses in the U.S. and Africa undertake theology studies in their final stage of formation for the priesthood. 8 The Prime Timers will be going to Kendall College on Tuesday, October 28, for a wonderful luncheon prepared by the students enrolled in their culinary school. This has been a popular event in the past, and we are limited to 16 people. The cost is $25, which includes tax and tip. Please call Ann Canapary at to make a reservation. Last year the Prime Timers had a wonderful time at the Christmas Brunch at Misericordia-Heart of Mercy, and we decided to make this a yearly event. There are opportunities to shop for bakery goods and last-minute Christmas gifts. Entertainment is also provided by the residents. This year s trip will be on Sunday, December 7, at 1:00 pm.
