STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. Colossians 3:1-2 Easter is a good time to recommit ourselves to a simpler lifestyle concentrating more of our efforts on what God wants from us and less of our efforts on what we want for ourselves. Jesus sacrificed everything for us. What can we sacrifice, not just at Lent, but every day, so that we can better serve Our Lord? From the weekend of April 17, 2011 Weekly Giving Goal $17, Actual Weekly Giving , Fiscal Year to Date Weekly Giving Goal , Actual Weekly Giving , Unmet Needs for Year ($73,955.00) ~ We are always very grateful for the sacrifices you make to support the mission, goals, and ministry of St. Luke Church. Thank you for your generosity! 2 WELCOME TO ST. LUKE River Forest, IL
3 GATHER IN PRAYER AND SERVICE We Welcome Our New Members At the beautiful Easter Vigil Service on Saturday night, these candidates became full members of the Catholic Church through the celebration of the Easter sacraments. Received Into Full Communion Already baptized as a Christian, Kate Hambrook made her Profession of Faith and was formally received into membership in the Catholic Church. Confirmation and Eucharist Along with Kate, Richard Lopez, who was baptized Catholic as a child, was anointed with the Holy Spirit and His special gifts in the Sacrament of Confirmation. Both of them completed their initiation into the Church by sharing in the Eucharist for the first time. They now enjoy full Communion with us at the table of the Lord. Our entire St. Luke community rejoices with these new members, and we extend to them a very warm welcome to our Catholic church family. DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY Pope John Paul II designated the Second Sunday of Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday. This year it is May 1. In a decree dated August 3, 2002, the Apostolic Penitentiary announced that in order to ensure that the faithful would observe this day (Divine Mercy Sunday) with intense devotion, the Supreme Pontiff himself established that this Sunday be enriched by a plenary indulgence... so that the faithful might receive in great abundance the gift of the consolation of the Holy Spirit. In this way, they can foster a growing love for God and for their neighbor, and after they have obtained God s pardon, they in turn might be persuaded to show a prompt pardon to their brothers and sisters. The plenary indulgence is granted under the usual conditions (sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff) to the faithful who, on the Second Sunday of Easter or Divine Mercy Sunday, in any church or chapel, in a spirit that is completely detached from the affection for sin, even a venial sin, take part in the prayers and devotions held in honor of Divine Mercy, or who, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, exposed or reserved in the tabernacle, recite the Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus (e.g. Merciful Jesus, I trust in you!). On Divine Mercy Sunday, May 1, from 3:00-4:00 pm, we will have a Holy Hour consisting of Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, recitation of the rosary and the Divine Mercy chaplet, and Benediction. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will also be available during this Holy Hour. Everyone is invited to join in this special prayer and devotion. APRIL 24, 2011 Easter Sunday 3
4 PACK THE PEWS MASS AND PIZZA PARTY The Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) gave the call and the parishioners answered: the Saturday, April 9 Pack the Pews Mass and Pizza Party was a delightful success! As 5:30 pm Mass began, the ushers were busy finding available pews for families large and small. Following the Mass, a steady stream of parishioners made their way over to Waldron Hall for delicious pizza, tasty sweets and lots of great conversation and fellowship. The younger attendees were treated to a showing of "Toy Story 3" and to spontaneous outdoor fun in the balmy, early spring evening. Maureen Beacom Gorman, PPC member, explained, Maria Cullerton had the idea to get everyone together, The pews were packed even after Communion! which many of us support. Kevin Hanley organized and the rest of us executed. So many people were involved: the Kopeckis, the Neyeneschs, the Peavys, the Malones, Charlie Smith, Ginny Beacom, Arlene Michna, the priests, Genie Halloran, the Rauhs, Deacon Bob Slobig, the Pipers, the 5:30 pm Mass ushers. And so many others helped with clean up. Pack the Pews was an effort to help all of us respond more fully to God s call to love one another through celebration of Mass and community-building events. Echoed Kevin Hanley, PPC chairman, "It was great to see the parish come together for an enjoyable time. This was a true community builder and something that we hope to continue." 4 WELCOME TO ST. LUKE River Forest, IL
5 GATHERINGS FROM THE PARISH Happy Easter to All! All the members of the St. Luke Parish Staff join me in wishing you and yours the Lord s special blessings on this Easter Day. Marinier and Marybeth Sirovatka Scott Comeau and Elizabeth Tuerk Michael Fenwick and Lizabeth Schrage Jacob Carlock and Caitlin Staab Matthew Gregorio and Nikki Scavo Antonio Pavone and Karen Dempsey Robert Evangelista and Lidia Rangel Michael Trudeau and Kelly Creedon 2011 Call to Stewardship to Educate, Celebrate and Inspire The Stewardship Campaign is going well so far. Twenty-two percent of the parish has pledged over $300,000 which represents about one third of our annual budget. Thank you to all of the parishioners who are participating and we ask that you continue to maintain your pledge commitment. Currently, we are experiencing a deficit in our Sunday giving. We need to increase Sunday giving to continue to carry out our mission and service here at St. Luke. We ask all parish members who could not commit before to consider making a commitment. Thank you for your prayerful response and for all the ways you make this parish community the best it can be!
