1 July 26, 2015 A man came from Baal-shalishah bringing to Elisha, the man of God, twenty barley loaves made from the first fruits, and fresh grain in the ear. Elisha said, Give it to the people to eat. But his servant objected, How can I set this before a hundred people? Elisha insisted, Give it to the people to eat. For thus says the LORD, They shall eat and there shall be some left over. And when they had eaten, there was some left over, as the LORD had said. 2 Elisha the Prophet 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time This week, we celebrate the Seventeenth Sunday of Ordinary Time. The readings this week call us to consider the extent of our trust in God. In the first reading, Elisha fully expects that God will provide. The Gospel reading restates this theme with Eucharistic overtones. The power of Jesus is presented but it is not the main point of the Gospel reading. The real point is that through Jesus, God provides an abundance for His people. Like Elisha and Jesus, we too must trust in the Divine Provider. Today, the Church continues the ministry of Jesus in many ways. Central to carrying out that mission is the gathering for the Holy Eucharist in which we express our faith and together are strengthened by the Lord so that we can go forth and carry His presence into the world around us. In the second reading, we are reminded that all of us are united in the love that God has for us and that we are called to live as befits those who are so blessed. Our lives should reflect both the unity with each other and the unity with Jesus that is expressed in the Eucharist. We are a Eucharistic people and thanksgiving must always be in our hearts. This sense of thanksgiving should be a powerful motivation for our reaching out to others. Elisha was a prophet and a wonder-worker of the Northern Kingdom of Israel who was active during the reign of Joram, Jehu, Jehoahaz, and Jehoash (Joash). Elisha was the son of Shaphat, a wealthy landowner of Abel-meholah; he became the attendant and disciple of Elijah. Elisha accomplishes include multiplying the twenty loaves of new barley into a sufficient supply for a hundred men, and for a disciple of the schools of the prophets, he recovers an axe fallen into the waters of the Jordan. He administered the miracle at Dothan, half-way on the road between Samaria and Jezreel, and at the siege of Samaria by the king of Syria, Elisha prophesied about the terrible sufferings of the people of Samaria and their eventual relief. Veneration He is venerated as a saint in a number of Christian Churches. His feast day is on June 14, on the Eastern Orthodox, and Eastern Catholic liturgical calendars (for those churches which use the traditional Julian calendar, June 14 falls on June 27 of the modern Gregorian calendar). John of Damascus composed a canon in honor of Elisha, and a church was built at Constantinople in his honor. In Western Christianity he is commemorated on the Carmelites, a Catholic religious order, calendar of saints. He is also commemorated as a prophet on the Calendar of Saints of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Both calendars also celebrate him on June 14. Both the Orthodox and Roman Catholics believe that he was unmarried and celibate. Julian the Apostate ( ) gave orders to burn the relics of the prophets Elisha, Obadiah and John the Baptist, who were buried next to each other in Sebastia, but they were rescued by the Christians, and part of them were transferred to Alexandria. Today, the relics of Elisha are claimed to be among the possessions of the Coptic Orthodox Monastery of Saint Macarius the Great in Scetes, Egypt. Elisha (Arabic: Alyasa' ( isاليسع also considered an Islamic prophet and is seen by Muslims to be the prophetic successor to Elijah (Ilyas). 4 World Meeting of Families Philadelphia 2015 Special Exhibits and Activities at the Congress and Around Philadelphia The first segment of the World Meeting of Families Philadelphia 2015 will take place at the Pennsylvania Convention Center from Sept Most events will occur congruent with the activities to take place at the convention center for the Congress. The Center covers more than 2 million square feet and is the 14th largest facility in the nation. It features the largest exhibit space and ballroom in the Northeastern U.S. Congress Presentations Language Accommodations Keynote Presentations will receive simultaneous interpretation into several languages, including French, English, Spanish and Italian. Other languages will be added as registration shows a need. Breakout Sessions: Congress attendees will be able to choose from sessions presented in the primary language of speakers. A select few Breakouts will be simultaneously interpreted or have one of the panelists interpreted. Celebration Accommodations Mass will be celebrated inside the convention center everyday. Confession locations will be set-up at designated areas in the convention center and times will be announced. Youth Congress Celebrating the Family Young people who are registered with families attending the World Meeting of Families Philadelphia 2015 are admitted to the Youth Congress. The WMOF Youth Congress has a universal design and is accessible to all young people ages 6 to 17, who are attending with their family. If a young person is over age 17 but still in high school, the young person may be able to participate as long as they agree to follow the Youth Congress Code of Conduct. 5 Paint with The City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program Add your creative touch to a mural commemorating the Papal Visit. The World Meeting of Families Philadelphia 2015 will engage the entire region and attract millions of visitors from over 150 nations looking to be a part of history as Pope Francis makes his first papal visit to the United States this September. To help commemorate the historic occasion and create a lasting legacy in our community, the WMOF and the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program have commissioned world-renowned artist Cesar Viveros to develop a beautiful, familythemed mural that will capture the essence of this year s 2015 WMOF theme, Love Is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive. The completed mural, titled The Sacred Now: Preview of the Mural The mural is situated in an ideal location for visibility as the wall fronts a large open lot that will soon be developed, in partnership with the Trust for Public Land, into a community green space for school and family gatherings. The location is also part of the burgeoning North Broad St. corridor, connecting city neighborhoods of varying socioeconomic backgrounds. Once completed, the project will be a landmark stop on the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program s popular tour, already attracting more than 12,000 residents and visitors annually. Faith and Family in the 21 st Century, will transform the brick façade of the new St. Malachy School campus into a vibrant Philadelphia landmark that will be a symbol of pride for the students, faculty and surrounding neighborhoods. With a long and storied place in the Catholic community of Philadelphia, St. Malachy s roots go back to 1850 when it was known as the Church in the Woods, paying homage to its location on the rural outskirts of the city. Located in a North Philadelphia neighborhood struggling with poverty, St. Malachy has been a beacon of hope, welcoming children of all faiths and ethnicities to pursue their passion for education and community. The City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program is the nation s largest public art program, dedicated to the belief that art ignites change. For 30 years, Mural Arts has united artists and communities through a collaborative process, rooted in the traditions of mural-making, to create art that transforms public spaces and individual lives. Mural Arts engages communities in public art projects each year, and maintains its growing collection through a restoration initiative. Core Mural Arts programs such as Art Education, Restorative Justice, and Porch Light yield unique, project-based learning opportunities for thousands of youth and adults. Each year, 12,000 residents and visitors tour Mural Arts outdoor art gallery, which has become part of the city s civic landscape and a source of pride an d inspiration, earning Philadelphia international recognition as the City of Murals. This technique of creating mural panels individually allows and encourages community members across the region to participate in painting the mural before it is installed on Saint Malachy School. A series of Paint Days, co-sponsored by the WMF Philadelphia 2015 and Mural Arts were also announced and include the following sites: Children s Hospital of Philadelphia (University City).
