2 Canonical Visitation Most Reverend Daniel E. Thomas, an auxiliary bishop of Philadelphia and our Regional Bishop, will be making a Canonical Visit to our parish this Saturday, Sunday and Monday, Feb Every parish in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is visited every five years. Bishop Thomas will be celebrating the 5 p.m. Vigil Mass on Saturday and the 9:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday. Bishop Thomas will be meeting with our priests, deacons, the Sisters of St. Joseph who reside in our convent, and Coordinator of Religious Education; also, reviewing the Sacramental Records. On Monday, Feb. 11, at 9 a.m., Bishop Thomas will be visiting Holy Rosary Regional Catholic School, meeting with Mrs. Hoban, Principal, visiting classrooms, and having lunch with the faculty. At 7 p.m., he will meet with our pastoral and finance councils. The occasion of the Canonical Visit of our Regional Bishop is an important event in the life of our parish. As a representative of Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., Archbishop of Philadelphia, Bishop Thomas is visiting us on the Archbishop s behalf to learn about our parish and to support and encourage us as a community of faith. His visit is a wonderful expression of our union with our Archbishop and with all the other parishes in the Archdiocese. Please join us in welcoming Bishop Thomas and praying for the success of our upcoming Canonical Visitation. No Confessions on Holy Saturday Mar. 30 Fast, Abstinence & Other Acts of Penance for Lent The Bishops of the United States prescribe, as a minimal obligation, that all people who are 14 years of age and older are bound to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Further, all people 18 years of age and older, up to and including their 59th birthday, are bound to fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, while the other two meals on those days are to be light. All the faithful are encouraged to participate in Mass and to receive the Most Holy Eucharist daily, to celebrate frequently the Sacrament of Penance, to undertake spiritual reading, especially the study of the Sacred Scriptures, and to participate in parish Lenten devotions as well as Lenten education programs. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is especially recommended. All are encouraged to participate in Operation Rice Bowl, which has aided countless hungry people here in the Archdiocese as well as throughout our nation and our world. 3 Dear Friends in Christ, Each of us has the ability to become a saint. As disciples of Christ we are called to follow his example and to love our neighbor and to care for the poor, the sick and the needy. This duty belongs to each of us personally and it cannot be ignored or delegated away. As Catholics, we must not lose sight of the fact that we are born through our baptism to love and serve all people. Jesus did not turn away from the hungry, he fed them. He did not turn away from the blind, he gave them sight. He did not turn away from the sick, he cured them. And he did not turn away from sinners; he went and sat with them. He showed us the path to sainthood. The less fortunate are easy to ignore. They are the people who are homeless or dying or unemployed or mentally disabled. They're also the unborn child who has a right to God's gift of life, and the single mother who looks to us for compassion and material support. Above all, they're the persons in need that God presents to each of us as an opportunity to love right here, right now, in our daily lives. No one understands better the need to care for those less fortunate in our region than the Catholic Church and we do it well. In order for us to keep doing God's work, it is going to take all of us to do our part. I ask you to please do yours and make a gift to the 2013 Catholic Charities Appeal. Pope John Paul II designated 11 Feb. as World Day of the Sick, a special time of prayer and sharing, of offering one s suffering for the good of the Church and of reminding us to see in our sick brother and sister the face of Christ who, by suffering, dying, and rising, achieved the salvation of humankind (Letter Instituting World Day of the Sick, 13 May 1992). Mass Honoring the Gifts of Persons with Disabilities The annual Archdiocesan Mass Honoring the Gifts of Persons with Disabilities, The Deaf Community, Family, Friends and Caregivers is scheduled for Saturday, Mar. 23, at 10:30 a.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Baptism Baptisms are celebrated after the 11:30 a.m. Mass every Sunday, with the option of baptism during the 11:30 a.m. Mass on the fifth Sunday of the month. Both parents must attend a Pre-Jordan class, which is held the first Wednesday of every month. Pre-Registration for the class is required by contacting the rectory. Sponsors are required to submit a Certificate of Eligibility from their parish two weeks prior to the baptism. Marriage Notify the priest of your intention to marry at least six months before the date of the wedding to assure sufficient preparation and to arrange for Pre -Cana sessions. Pre-Cana Days are held in April and October. ANOINTING OF THE SICK First Saturday of the month during 8:30 a.m. Mass or by special request. Please notify the rectory as soon as possible when any parishioner becomes seriously ill or is admitted to the hospital.
