2 Epiphany Proclamation 2015 While a day like Christmas is fixed in our minds and on the calendars on December 25th, many of the important feasts of the Church year move, based upon the date that Easter is set. Easter changes each year moving to the Sunday after the "Paschal Full Moon," and can fall between March 22 and April 25. In ancient times before calendars were common, most people did not know the dates for the upcoming Liturgical Year. On Epiphany Sunday, the upcoming dates were "proclaimed" after the gospel in this way: Dear brothers and sisters, the glory of the Lord has shone upon us, and shall ever be manifest among us, until the day of his return. Through the rhythms of times and seasons let us celebrate the mysteries of salvation. Let us recall the year's culmination, the Easter Triduum of the Lord: his last supper, his crucifixion, his burial, and his rising celebrated between the evening of the Second day of April and the evening of the Fourth day of April, Easter Sunday being on the Fifth day of April. Each Easter -- as on each Sunday -- the Holy Church makes present the great and saving deed by which Christ has for ever conquered sin and death. From Easter are reckoned all the days we keep holy. Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, will occur on the Eighteenth day of February. The Ascension of the Lord will be commemorated on the Fourteenth day of May. Pentecost, joyful conclusion of the season of Easter, will be celebrated on the Twenty-fourth day of May. And, this year the First Sunday of Advent will be on the Twenty-ninth day of November. Likewise the pilgrim Church proclaims the passover of Christ in the feasts of the holy Mother of God, in the feasts of the Apostles and Saints, and in the commemoration of the faithful departed. To Jesus Christ, who was, who is, and who is to come, Lord of time and history, be endless praise, for ever and ever. Amen. Epiphany of Our Lord Church - January 4, 2015 Page 2

3 The Twelve Days of Christmas The song The Twelve Days of Christmas began as a way Catholics in England taught the faith to their children in the period when they were forbidden to practice their religion ( ). Several schemas link doctrine to the twelve days. A schema is a pattern imposed on a complex reality or experience to assist in explaining it. A Partridge stands for Christ, who gathers his own under his wings-god s first gift. Two turtledoves represent the sacrifice of the Jewish family at the birth of a son, or the two testaments of the Bible. Three French hens symbolize the gifts of the Magi, the persons of the Trinity, or faith, hope and love. Four calling birds remind us of the four Evangelists - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Five golden rings suggest the first five books of the Old Testament, the Torah (Hebrew) or Pentateuch (Greek). Six geese suggest the six days of the week when humanity labors. Seven swans remind us of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. Eight maids represent the people saved in the Ark or the eight beatitudes. Nine ladies represent the fruits of the Holy Spirit or the nine ranks of angels. Ten lords stand for the Ten Commandments. Eleven pipers represent the eleven apostles who were faithful. Twelve drummers remind us of the articles of the Apostles Creed, or the gates of heaven or the tribes of Israel. The twelve Days of Christmas start with December 26 and end on January 6. The first mention of this period dates to Ephrem Syrus at the end of the fourth century; in 567, the Council of Tours declared these twelve days as a festal period. Feast of the Epiphany - the Magi bearing gifts The Gospel tells us that some wise men came from the East, following the star. It seems that their steps or their vision may have faltered, albeit momentarily, along the way. For we hear that they have stopped first, not at Bethlehem but Jerusalem. In Jerusalem, they meet Herod. Like them, he is a king. Unlike them, he is closed to the idea of a Saviour who might challenge his power and might. Yet, the Magi are committed to their search. Herod's obstinance will not hinder their journey. The Gospel concludes, telling us that they returned home "a different way." Perhaps the route was different, determined as they may have been to avoid Herod and his mischief. Yet, not only the path but also the pilgrims were "a different way." They had come to the manger as wise men bearing gifts. They leave the stable with gifts beyond measure, for they have seen God. St. John Chrysostem tells us: "If the Magi had come in search of an earthly King, they would have been disconcerted at finding that they had taken the trouble to come such a long way for nothing. Consequently, they would have neither adored nor offered gifts. But since they sought a heavenly King, though they found in Him no signs of royal pre-eminence, yet, content with the testimony of the star alone, they adored: for they saw a man, and they acknowledged a God." Art and Environment We thank all the volunteers who donated their valuable time and talent to help decorate the Christmas Nativity Crib and the Church sanctuary. First Penance The Sacrament of First Penance will be celebrated on Thursday, Jan. 8, at 7 p.m. in the Church. Families are asked to be seated by 6:45 p.m. Please pray for the children as they prepare to receive God s mercy, forgiveness and grace in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
