Feast of St. Mary Magdalene The July 22 Obligatory Memorial of St. Mary Magdalene has been raised in rank as a Feast on the General Roman Calendar by Pope Francis. The Church, both in the East and West, has always regarded Mary Magdalene the first witness of the Lord s resurrection and the first evangelist, and with the greatest reverence has always honored her although in diverse ways. Given that in our time the Church is called to reflect in a more profound way on the dignity of Woman, on the New Evangelization and on the greatness of the Mystery of Divine Mercy, it seemed right that the example of Mary Magdalene might also fittingly be proposed to the faithful. In fact t h i s woman, known as the one who loved Christ and who was greatly loved by Christ, and was called a witness of Divine Mercy by Gregory the Great and an apostle of the apostles by Thomas Aquinas, can now rightly be taken by the faithful as a model of women s role in the Church. Statement from the Office of Divine Worship, July 2016 Courage/EnCourage Conference With a desire to spread the message of mercy far and wide, you are invited to the 29th Annual Courage and EnCourage Conference Thursday, July 21-Sunday, July 24, at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. 4 Pastors balance Jesus teaching on marriage and sexuality with sensitivity By Matthew Gambino, July 7, 2016, CatholicPhilly.com, Reprinted with permission The Archdiocese of Philadelphia s new guidelines for clergy and church ministers implementing Pope Francis insights on marriage and family life stress that...adopting a sensitive pastoral approach along with presenting more persuasively the church s teaching about the nature of the family and the sacrament of matrimony is the goal of the guidelines at the parish level. One Philadelphia priest with more than 40 years as a pastor preparing couples for the sacrament of marriage is Father Joseph Quindlen, who found the new guidelines thorough and helpful not only for lay Catholics but for pastors too. It s helpful to be clear about what the church teaches (because) people and pastors don t know what s there, said the pastor of Epiphany of Our Lord Parish in Plymouth Meeting. That is why the guidelines are important, he believes, even though they don t change church teaching but instead encourage pastors to propose new ways of conveying it, with an emphasis on mercy. Catholics believe all teaching on the faith was given from Jesus to the apostles and carried on by their successors, the bishops. We renew and intensify the proclamation of God s mercy through how we teach, Father Quindlen said. We re all sinners trying to respond to truth as the Spirit reveals it. In his interviews with couples who come to the church seeking marriage or those couples already married seeking a sacrament, the priest said he begins by recognizing the spark of faith within them. What prompts people to come is their faith, Father Quindlen said. My responsibility is to affirm that faith, to explain what the teachings are and why. The culture doesn t affirm a permanent commitment in faith. He then tries to strike that balance sought by Pope Francis by identifying any aspect of the person s life that may be out of step with Jesus teaching for marriage and family life, and to work with him or her overtime to resolve it. We re companions on the journey, Father Quindlen said of both himself and the people he works with. We all need help, we re all called to conversion and change of heart, no matter what state of life. We re called to holiness and a chaste life. His work with couples and family members is both preparation and accompaniment. Both the couple and the priest accompanying each other, he said. I firmly believe that ministry is mutual. In addition to presenting church teaching as it regards marriage, the archdiocesan guidelines also concern family life, and in particular, regarding homosexuality. One priest ministering to people with same-sex attraction is Father Philip Bochanski, a Philadelphia priest and national director of Courage International, a support group for homosexual people trying to live holy and chaste lives. He also has many years of experience conveying Catholic teaching with a pastoral, merciful approach, which consists of meeting them, listening to them, showing them the path to holiness and staying with them as they try to carry it out, he said. It is not, these are the rules, come back to me when you ve figured it out, he said. Rather, tell me your story. You will have to make some changes in your life, but I am here to help you and walk with you. One problem Father Bochanski sees is that many homosexual and heterosexual people accept the cultural narrative that life without sex is life without love. He believes he is in a unique position as a priest to counter that presumption and provide witness that single people can successfully integrate their chaste sexuality into their whole person. There is lots of love in my life relatives, friends, other priests, he said. The single life is not a consolation prize but a fulfilling part of life. While priests or religious have a community to help them live a sexually integrated chaste life marked by mutual prayer and support, lay people often do not, Father Bochanski explained. Courage International offers that support to its members, and they give good example to others. They are witnesses to a joyful and fulfilled life. They are also an underrepresented part of the population but they re there, he said. He called the homosexual people he works with closely brave and courageous because they are trying to live as disciples of Jesus who say, I want to do this but I can t do it alone. Will you walk with me? They desire a deeper relationship with Jesus, Father Bochanski said. Guidelines can be viewed at:

5 Independence Day July 4, 2016 Monday of the 14th week in Orinary Time (Year II) Homily by Father Quindlen As we celebrate our independence as a nation, we believers recall our dependence upon God for all that we need for our salvation. As citizens of these United States of America and citizens of the kingdom of heaven, we acknowledge both our freedom and our responsibility. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, during his visit to the U.S. last September, encouraged us to nurture, promote and defend the precious gift of religious freedom. That precious gift extends beyond the freedom to worship. It includes the freedom to nurture, promote and defend our faith in the marketplace and the public square. We Catholics citizens accept our threefold moral obligation to pay taxes, to vote and to defend our country as well as our faith. During this presidential election year, we Americans are called to incorporate our values and beliefs into the political process in a manner that reflects what best serves humanity. We Catholics, the U.S. bishops remind us, are called to focus on what protects or threatens human life and dignity. Archbishop Chaput, in his July 1 column in CatholicPhilly.com, wrote: The coming national election this fall is unsettling, complicated and important, all at the same time. He concluded, all of us who are Catholic need to begin thinking carefully about our political responsibilities now, guided by the essentials of our faith. We Christians accept the threefold moral obligation to which we are all called; namely to deny ourselves, to take up our cross, and to follow Jesus. Jesus exhibits a healthy freedom, an overwhelming compassion and a wholesome concern about sickness and death in today s gospel. By allowing a woman with hemorrhages to touch him and by taking the hand of a dead child, Jesus rendered himself ritually unclean and incapable of entering the synagogue or temple. Yet, people of faith who others considered unclean presumed to touch Jesus and to request him to touch them. The prophet Hosea began the tradition of describing the relationship between Yahweh and Israel in terms of marriage. I will espouse you to me forever, Yahweh told Israel in announcing the betrothal. He endowed her with the bridal gift of right, justice, love, mercy and fidelity. We affirm our fidelity to God and country on this Independence Day as we pledge allegiance to one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all.

6 A Prayer for our Nation God our Father, You guide everything in wisdom and love. Accept the prayers we offer for our Nation; By the wisdom of our leaders and the integrity of our citizens, may harmony and justice be restored and may there be lasting prosperity and peace. We ask this through Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, for ever and ever. Amen Sacramentary Cathedral Ambassadors Cathedral Ambassadors is an evangelization ministry of the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul. Ambassadors are volunteers from throughout the Archdiocese and are trained to staff the Basilica to answer questions and give tours. The schedule is flexible one four-hour shift or more a month.
