Pope Prays for Catechists Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, went to the tomb of Pope St. Pius X in St. Peter s Basilica on Aug. 21, the saint s feast day, to pray for all catechists, entrusting them to his protection as I did every year in Argentina, the Pope said. Our Holy Father s monthly Prayer Intentions include both a Universal Intention and an Intention for Evangelization. For September, Our Holy Father s Intention for Evangelization is That catechists may give witness by living in a way consistent with the faith they proclaim. HRRCS Advisory Board Our Catholic Schools can secure their future viability as strong, successful centers of religious and academic excellence by implementing a better business model while ensuring greater school engagement and partnership of the laity, wrote Bishop Fitzgerald, 17 March Bishop Fitzgerald chairs our archdiocesan Executive Board of Elementary Education, which created a governance model for regional schools that includes an Advisory Board to oversee strategic planning, marketing, enrollment, and finances. Blair, Chairman of Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis This year, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday on September 20, 2015, and will focus on the theme "Safeguarding the Dignity of Every Human Person." Those whom the community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. The Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis is pleased to announce the release of the 2015 Catechetical Sunday materials focused on the theme: Safeguarding the Dignity of Every Human Person. Catechetical Sunday, which is celebrated annually on the third Sunday in September in parishes across the United States, falls this year on the weekend of September 20, 2015, the Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time. This year s theme reminds us that the dignity of each human person rests in the biblical teaching (Gen 1:26-27) that he or she is made in God s image and likeness. It also reminds us that we the baptized may need to actively support and protect others from all sorts of harm, cherishing human life from the moment of conception to a natural death. As in past years, a variety of materials have been prepared to assist pastors, parish catechists, Catholic school teachers and the faithful in celebrating Catechetical Sunday, not only in September, but also throughout the year. These materials are provided free of charge. USCCB Publishing will also sell printed copies of prayer cards, family commitment cards, posters, and certificates in English and Spanish. I pray with you that we may be vigilant in affirming and nurturing our God-given human dignity in spite of every challenge. Let us use the coming year to reflect on how the Bible, and in particular the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes, provide the spiritual and moral foundations for our Christian life. And let us eagerly join with the whole Church in thanksgiving and personal witness to the joy of living the Gospel day by day. 3 Papal Visit Archbishop Chaput encourages all of us to represent our parish, and to experience with our families this joyous and historic celebration of Pope Francis visit. Our parish will be provided 210 Reserved Standing passes to the biggest events: The Festival of Families on Saturday, Sept. 26, and the Papal Mass on Sunday, Sept. 27. Please contact the parish office hours for reservations for these Reserved Standing passes. is preferred. Free tickets will be required for the best places at the pontiff s three public appearances. Additionally, there will be two papal parades in order to see the Holy Father close up on the Parkway and 40 Jumbotrons planned across the Festival Grounds. A limited number of Regional Rail Passes have been made available through the generosity of some parishioners. Scout Fundraiser Cub Scout Packs 117 and 216 will be selling popcorn at all Masses the weekend of Oct , and recruiting for new scouts. The popcorn fundraiser helps fund the different Scout activities and outings throughout the Scout year. Thank you for your support in helping us provide a great Scouting experience for our boys! Free Eye Care and Free Eyeglasses Children (Birth to 18) Public Citizens for Children and Youth (PCCY) is having Give Kids Sight Day on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Wills Eye Hospital, 9th & Walnut, Philadelphia. No appointment necessary. Especially for children who don't have any health insurance or don't have vision coverage. Children from Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia Counties are welcome to join us with a parent or guardian. Volunteers are needed, You do not need medical training. Visit Urban Trinity History The Story of Catholic Philadelphia Learn about Catholic history in Philadelphia just in time for the World Meeting of Families! History Making Productions, the Philadelphia-based EMMY award winning documentary film company behind Philadelphia: The Great Experiment, has produced a new documentary film, Urban Trinity: The Story of Catholic Philadelphia. Urban Trinity explores Philadelphia s history through the lens of the many Catholic immigrants who shaped and changed the city. The film is presented in three 26-minute chapters. Urban Trinity will be broadcast on 6abc/WPVI- TV. 5 Dear Friends, Archdiocese of Philadelphia Office of the Archbishop 222 North 17th Street Philadelphia, PA September 8, 2015 In a little more than two weeks, the World Meeting of Families 2015 will be a memory. The coming few days are crucial to its success. For the past three years a great many people have labored hard and generously to make this gathering a life-changing event -- an experience of family joy and conversion; and a turning point for the better in the life of our local Church. Now those efforts are about to come to harvest. And I need your help, The World Meeting of Families is a chance to feel the joy and presence of God again in a special way; to take pride in being Catholic; and to renew the work of the Church in a spirit of confidence and hope. God is inviting us to a celebration of Pope Francis that will move our own hearts, and make the nation and the world take notice. I ask every one of you to come to Center City with your families for the Festival of Families on September 26 and the closing papal Mass on September 27. Plenty of SEPTA tickets are still available for these weekend events with the Pope, and the experience of welcoming the Holy Father will be a once in a lifetime celebration. Your presence in Center City will impact much more than just our local Church. It will help shape the outcome of the Synod on the Family in Rome, and the health of the family worldwide. What you do now matters for years to come. So please do everything you can to be there, and encourage your friends and neighbors to be there as well. Archbishop of Philadelphia Mary Sheehan, Secretary, PPC Pulpit Announcement, Sept Father Quindlen asked me to speak with all of you this evening/morning with regard to the World Meeting of Families (WMOF) and the papal visit. I m sure all of you have been r e c e i v i n g information about transportation, security, road closures and hotel accommodations from television, websites and other information media, as well as the number of pilgrims predicted to be attending the festivities on the parkway. I think we all have come to the conclusion that, for many of us, this pilgrimage will be restrictive in many ways. Because the main focus of the WMOF is the Family, we invite your participation at the parish level by joining us in the following activities. Let s celebrate the Festival of Families by bringing family photographs and pictures here to church and posting them on the bulletin boards that will be available in the church vestibule. Above all, don t forget to bring photographs and pictures of your pets, since they are also members of our families--st. Francis of Assisi being the patron saint of animals. In anticipation of the celebration of the Papal Mass on Sunday, Sept. 27, by Pope Francis, here at EOL all the weekend Masses will be celebrated for the living and deceased members of our parish families; and, for all the special intentions of the families who are troubled and in need. We encourage all our parishioners to invite as many members of our families as possible to attend Mass together that weekend because Love is Our Mission. SO Starting next week, let s all bring in those great photographs and snapshots of our families and show them off to the rest of our parish community, and, don t forget to write your names on the photographs. And Most importantly, the Festival of Families of guide our families, especially those most troubled, to EOL would not be complete without joining with our families and the families of our parish community to celebrate Mass together on the weekend of Sept , invoking the Holy Spirit to be homes of communion and prayer.
