Also, please advise our office staff of any change of address, telephone number or family status. Anointing of the Sick First Saturday of the month during 8:30 a.m. Mass or by request. Please notify the rectory as soon as possible when any parishioner becomes seriously ill or is admitted to the hospital. Baptism Baptisms are celebrated after the 11:30 a.m. Mass on Sundays upon request. Both first-time parents need to attend a Pre-Jordan class, which is held the first Wednesday of every month. Pre-Registration for the class is required by contacting the Parish Office. Sponsors not from Epiphany are required to submit a Certificate of Eligibility from their parish two weeks prior to the Baptism. Matrimony Notify the priest of your intention to marry at least six months before the date of the wedding to assure sufficient preparation and to arrange for Pre-Cana sessions. Miraculous Medal Perpetual Novena After 8:30 a.m. Mass every Saturday. Holy Communion for the Sick and Homebound Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are available to bring Communion to the sick and homebound. Natural Family Planning Awareness Week To articulate Catholic beliefs about human sexuality, conjugal love and responsible parenthood and to mark the feast of SS. Casting Nets Evangelization Institute A bi-lingual retreat (English and Spanish) on how to create a culture of missionary discipleship and evangelization will be held the weekend of July at the Malvern Retreat House. Register by calling or at Wedding of the Sea Festival All are invited to take part in the traditional Wedding of the Sea on Tuesday, Aug. 15, with the parish of St. Monica in Atlantic City. Mass at Boardwalk Hall at 12 p.m. followed by procession to the ocean at 1:15 p.m. The festival runs until 8 p.m. in the parking lot of St. Michael s on Georgia Ave. Enjoy vendors, food, live music, games and more. Ninety-two pints of blood were collected from 96 donors. All donors were remembered in a special way at Mass on Saturday, July 1, in thanksgiving to the Lord for the willingness and ability of the donors to give the gift of life. Our next blood drive will be Friday, Oct. 13. Catholic Social Services Thank You Thank you so very much for the generous donations of $ in gift cards for the baby shower. It was such a success! 4 Independence Day Homily By Father Quindlen July 4, 2017 The relationship between church and state reflects the relationship between religion and politics. The relationship between religion and politics reflects the relationship between faith and culture. Empires, monarchies, dictatorships and democracies govern for a time. But, the reign of God lasts forever. Jesus clarified and prioritized those relationships when he declared: Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar s; and, to God the things that are God s (Mt. 22:21). Pope St. John Paul II s encyclical titled The Hundredth Year, published in 1991, is the Church s most definitive teaching on democracy to date. Authentic democracy is possible only in a state ruled by law, and on the basis of a correct conception of the human person, he wrote. As history demonstrates, a democracy without values easily turns into open or thinly disguised totalitarianism. Returning to the subject in his 1995 encyclical titled The Gospel of Life, Pope St. John Paul II referred to democracy as a positive sign of the times, whose value...depends of conformity to the moral law. For the past five years, our nation s Catholic bishops have invited us to observe a Fortnight for Freedom. From June 21, the vigil of the feasts of SS. John Fisher and Thomas More, to July 4, we ponder the role of our faith in the public square to inform, challenge and evangelize an increasingly secular society. The feast day of St. Elizabeth of Portugal, celebrated throughout the Church universal today, has been perpetually transferred to tomorrow for dioceses in the U.S.A. St. Elizabeth of Portugal is an ideal role model for our nation celebrating Independence Day today. She was a wife and mother who lived a life of relationship between church and state, religion and politics, faith and culture, spanning the 13th and 14th centuries. Her father was a king, her husband was a king, and her son and son-in-law were kings. Amidst royalty all her life, she was known for her piety and charity. She was able to establish herself a life conducive to growth in God s love. She befriended pilgrims, strangers, the sick and the poor. She was known as a peacemaker, depicted in art in her royal garb with a dove or an olive branch. After the death of her husband, she entered the monastery of the Poor Clares as a member of the Third Order of St. Francis. On this Independence Day, we invoke the intercession of St. Elizabeth of Portugal that God bless all of us, and God bless America. It s a Grand Old Flag By Jack McCloskey In July of 1776, a great country was begun; an amalgam of immigrants from every country beneath the sun. The strength of each one s heritage combined to create the best, so to belittle any immigrant group is to sadden all the rest. On the Fourth of July, let us thank the Lord we re citizens of this land, with freedom won by toil and truth and God s footsteps beside ours in the sand. 5 Jesus said to his disciples, The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. That is why the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath. Summertime is an opportune time for rest and relaxation, renewal of body, soul, mind and heart. Summertime is also an opportune time for reflection on the necessity of worship in the life of every believer, the necessity to give God the honor, glory and praise that is His due. The third commandment is the only one that begins with the word remember, Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day. The first precept of the Church is to attend Mass every Sunday and holy day of obligation. By an apostolic tradition which took its origin from the very day of Christ s resurrection, the Church celebrates the paschal mystery every eighth day. With good reason this day, then, bears the name of the Lord s day or the day of the Lord.Hence, the Lord s day is the original feast day a day of joy and of freedom from work (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 106). On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are obliged to assist at Mass. They are also to abstain from such work or business that would inhibit the worship to be given to God, the joy proper to the Lord s day, or the due relaxation of mind and body (Code of Cannon Law, 1247). The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason.those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2181). In respecting religious liberty and the common good of all, Christians...have to give everyone a public example of prayer, respect and joy, and defend their traditions as a precious contribution to the spiritual life of society (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2188). With God s grace and the inspiration of others, may we never forget to keep holy the Sabbath day! Epiphany of Our Lord Church - July 16, th Sunday

6 Boy Scouts Adventure! Leadership! Values! Advancement! Troop 117 serves boys ages 10 through 17 from the Whitpain, Plymouth Meeting, Whitemarsh, and Conshohocken areas by preparing boys for life. The troop meets Thursdays year round at 7 p.m. in Grady Hall. Boy Scouts learn the value of hard work, and experience the thrill of seeing it pay off. Add in outdoor adventures and scouting gives boys all the experience they need to become men. All Troop activities are conducted under the supervision of at least two trained adult leaders. The Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmasters have all undergone the Youth Protection training required by Boy Scouts of America. Parents are always welcome to participate in Troop activities. The Troop welcomes boys of all ability levels and interests.
