4 A journalist, freelance writer and author, Russell Shaw directed media relations for the National Conference of Catholic Bishops and the United States Catholic Conference for 18 years prior to his current position as a contributing editor to Our Sunday Visitor, a national Catholic weekly newspaper. His newest book, published this year by Ignatious Press, with the foreword by Archbishop Chaput, is titled American Church, subtitled The Remarkable Rise, Meteoric Fall, and Uncertain Future of Catholicism in America. In Shaw s own words, his book is an attempt to sketch the process by which American Catholics have been assimilated into American culture during the past two centuries and to assess the impact cultural assimilation has had on Catholicism in the United States. Shaw stated that American Catholicism finds itself enmeshed in a grave crisis that includes falling numbers of priests and religious; sharply declining attendance at weekly Mass and participation in the sacramental life of the Church; and a massive, continuing exodus by people, especially young people, who ve lost interest in Catholicism, even as many others remain Catholic in little but name. At our peril as a Church we ignore the fact that this bad news, and much more besides, is related at least in part to the cultural assimilation of American Catholics into the American secular mainstream. And of course, Shaw observed, rather than hesitant over their relationship with a secular culture in tension with their faith, very large numbers of American Catholics plunge unconditionally into that culture, at enormous cost to their identity as Catholics. Commenting on the tension that now exists between the teaching of the Church and the attitudes of many American Catholics, Shaw noted, the latest large-scale examination of Catholic attitudes to be published is the fifth Catholics in America study conducted at six-year intervals by a team of social scientists under the direction of William V. D Antonio. Published in 2011, the latest study found, among much else, that among the 19% of the 1,442 self-identified Catholics whom it surveyed who regard themselves as highly committed to the Church, strikingly high percentages believe it is possible to be a good Catholic without attending Mass every Sunday (49%); without following Church doctrine on birth control (60%), divorce and remarriage (46%), and abortion (31%); without being married in the Church (48%); and without giving time or money to help the poor (39%). The survey results, D Antonio wrote, provide a portrait showing both persistence and change in the beliefs, practices and attitudes of Catholics. 5 People looking for reasons to be optimistic about the future of the Church in America sometimes turn to Hispanics and young people, Shaw pointed out. Certainly there are many high-minded and devout young American Catholics who are strongly committed to their faith. I have met some of them, and I admire them. These are the young people who attend events like World Youth Day, pitch in to make projects in their parishes and schools succeed, sign up for volunteer service programs during vacation or after graduation, participate in Mass and receive the sacraments, strive to live chaste lives despite the influence of the corrupt secular culture surrounding them, marry responsibly with the intention of having Catholic homes and families, or in some cases enter the priesthood and religious life. If the Church in the United States has a future, these admirable young people are it. But according to the numbers, it s an unpleasant fact that they re a minority even among their Catholic peers. The problems that now face American Catholicism are serious, numerous, and complex, Shaw emphasized. Moreover, to the extent that they are symptoms of the secularization process under way in many places today, the immediate challenge isn t so much to solve the problems as it it to recognize what is happening and adapt to it in ways faithful to the Catholic tradition but responsive to the needs of rapidly changing times. It is imperative, Shaw urged, that American Catholic laypeople not only for their own sakes but for the sake of the Church and society discern and accept their personal vocations, fully understanding them to be rooted in and directed to the secular order perceived in this way. The renewal of American Catholicism that is now so urgently needed rests ultimately with them. We can try to run away or we can do our best to embrace the way of the Lord Jesus, which here and now and always, is the way of the cross. There is no third option, Shaw concluded. Endorsement Shaw is one of the best informed, most articulate observers of the American Catholic experience; a writer of elegant clarity, fairness and impeccable research. To understand the Church in the USA and the challenges she now faces, American Church should be on the short list of books you need to read. Most Rev. Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M., Cap. If we believe, others will more readily believe. If we are holy, others will more easily hear their own call to holiness. The crisis in today s Church is finally a crisis not of resources but of baptism; it is a crisis of faith. The central issue of modern American Catholic life is the temptation to accommodate, to compromise, to get along, and to fit in and then feel good about it. We accept tepidness in the name of pluralism. We put diversity of belief and behavior above truth. We place the individual above the common good. We elevate tolerance above love, justice, and real charity. None of this converts anybody. It does the opposite. Baptism Baptisms are celebrated after the 11:30 a.m. Mass every Sunday, with the option of baptism during the 11:30 a.m. Mass on the fifth Sunday of the month. Both parents must attend a Pre-Jordan class, which is held the first Wednesday of every month. Pre- Registration for the class is required by contacting the rectory. Sponsors are required to submit a Certificate of Eligibility from their parish two weeks prior to the baptism. Marriage Notify the priest of your intention to marry at least six months before the date of the wedding to assure sufficient preparation and to arrange for Pre-Cana sessions. Pre-Cana Days are held in April and October. Anointing of the Sick First Saturday of the month during 8:30 a.m. Mass or by special request. Please notify the rectory as soon as possible when any parishioner becomes seriously ill or is admitted to the hospital.
