Our Holy Father s Prayer Intention for October Workers and the unemployed. That all workers may receive respect and protection of their rights, and that the unemployed may receive the opportunity to contribute to the common good. October Count In 1990, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia inaugurated the practice of counting attendance at weekend Masses during the month of October. The purpose of the October Count is to monitor trends in attendance throughout the Archdiocese and, in doing so, obtain a picture of the Archdiocese that is very useful for long range planning. In past years, many pastors found this procedure to be enlightening and useful for their own parochial ministries. Experience suggests that the average weekend Mass attendance for the weekends of October be used as a standard count. The total attendance of all counts is then divided by four or five weeks depending on the year, resulting in the average October Count. This must be an actual physical count, not estimation. Respect Life Sunday The Respect Life Committee will be accepting donations for lapel roses and precious feet pins to support pro-life outreach efforts on Respect Life Sunday, Oct. 1. The crosses displayed on the lawn of the church are in remembrance of the more than 59 million babies who have been aborted. Each cross (there are 59) represents one million babies. Respect Life Committee The Committee is seeking new members to help in the mission to defend and protect all life from the moment of conception until natural death. Meetings are held the second Saturday of every month. Contact Bernie Toth at (610) Epiphany of Our Lord Church - Sept. 24, th Sunday

National Catholic Women s Conference Feminine Genius: a phrase coined by St. John Paul II to describe to the particular gifts which God gives to women for outreach to the world. The closing message of the Second Vatican Council included the following: The hour...has come, when the vocation of women is being acknowledged in its fullness, the hour in which women acquire in the world an influence, an effect and a power never hitherto achieved women imbued with a spirit of the Gospel can do so much to aid humanity in not falling. The uniqueness of the feminine genius comes into focus only when the vocation of women is grasped properly. The Church understands that each gender has unique gifts as well as those shared. Christ, and therefore His Church, recognizes the importance of women. It was a woman, the Blessed Virgin Mary, who first received the Son of God and was trusted and tasked with raising Him. Mary Magdalene is the first to receive the risen Christ. She was trusted and tasked with announcing the news of the Resurrection. God entrusted the future of humanity to women and their unique gifts. Archbishop Chaput, in his column titled A Moment for Women in the New Evangelization, notes one gift is the aptness for relationship. Pope Francis, in his apostolic exhortation The Joy of the Gospel, speaks of the need to cultivate the art of accompaniment, reminding us that one does not encounter Christ in a vacuum but through personal relationships. This conference the first-ever National Catholic Women s Conference Archbishop Chaput explains, seeks to honor precisely those things that make women who they are. Women in the New Evangelization (WINE) is a new Catholic women s ministry that recognizes women s central role in the mission of the Church. Hosted by WINE, the conference, on Saturday, Oct. 21, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., at Our Lady of Czestochowa, Doylestown, will include dynamic speakers such as Teresa Tomeo and Kelly Wahlquist, and musician Amanda Vernon. The day will also include Mass, confession, prayer, socializing and more. Register at wineconference.org. Epiphany of Our Lord Church - Sept. 24, th Sunday

5 Excerpts from Bringing the Eucharist and becoming the body of Christ By Effie Caldarola ~ Sept. 6, 2017 When I lived in Alaska, I was an extraordinary minister of holy Communion to the homebound. Looking back, I m rather amazed that I volunteered for this task, which often took me on ice-clogged roads that meandered haphazardly into the snowy hillsides of Anchorage. But I m so glad for the memory of that parish ministry. Sometimes I look back at the people our little group served and I recall what a privilege it was to be able to bring the body of Christ to people on Sunday morning. One man we visited had a rare disease that kept him in chronic, intense pain. Only middle-aged, he spent his days sequestered in a dark bedroom. Apparently, even bright light hurt, and when I entered his room, the only thing keeping the darkness at bay was light streaming softly in from the adjacent bathroom. When he died, the priest who officiated at his funeral said he had never ministered to anyone who suffered as much. I can only hope that the Eucharist, provided by me and other parishioners, buoyed him in that dreadful pain. Another place on our rounds was a small assisted living home, licensed for five people. The little house was immaculate, and when I arrived, the ladies would be gathered around the dining table getting their nails done or having their hair fixed in anticipation of Sunday family visitors. I will never forget Daisy, who lived there, because she always welcomed the Eucharist with such devotion. Jesus Jesus, she would mumble softly with her eyes closed after receiving Communion, as if engaged in an intense private reverie. Not everyone was so devout or so personally inspiring. We trudged up to dirty houses and places where our arrival was greeted as of no more consequence than the paperboy s. We spent much time at a house that reeked of tobacco smoke, where filled ashtrays competed with an oxygen tank amid the clutter. But no one welcomed our visits more than the lady of that house. Yes, we came to bring the body of Christ, but we realized we also came as the body of Christ, and it was our presence that she craved. This is the time of year when most parishes are gearing up for ministry sign-ups. I just visited a parish where the priest was begging for 50 more faith formation volunteers. At another parish, I saw tables full of sign-ups for the fall festival. Our parishes are the place where the church lives. Sometimes, we go to Sunday Mass as if we have blinders on. We slip in and out with hardly a greeting to anyone. We merely go through the paces. I can just about guarantee you that if you become involved in a parish ministry, this attitude toward your church home will be changed and enlivened. That old saying I got so much more out of it than I gave will be true for you. You will meet wonderful, spirit-filled people and make deeper friendships. You will be inspired. Choose a ministry that calls to you. Maybe you re not the catechetical type, or maybe a Sunday morning trek up an icy hillside road doesn t appeal. Pray about it. Every parish has a multitude of needs and opportunities to become the body of Christ to someone. You won t be sorry. Reprinted Epiphany with permission of Our Lord Church from - Sept.
