2 Pope Francis on Advent In this season of Advent, we are called to expand the horizons of our hearts, to be amazed by the life which presents itself each day with newness. In order to do this, we must learn not to depend on our own certainties, on our own established strategies, because the Lord comes at a time that we do not imagine. 3 A Reflection on Advent By Father Quindlen Our annual liturgical season of Advent is upon us! The First Sunday of Advent marks the beginning of the new Church year, the Year of Grace While the hustle and bustle of the holiday season finds us purchasing gifts, sending greeting cards, and decorating our homes, it s the spiritual preparation that is paramount for us Christians. The evangelists Matthew, Mark and John all begin their gospel accounts by referring to the preaching of St. John the Baptist. John the Baptist's call to repentance in preparation for Jesus birth reminds us that our repentance is another way in which we can prepare for the Lord's coming and our celebration of Christmas. Advent is a season of hope, a time of anticipation and expectation as we await the fulfillment of God s promise to send us a Savior and Redeemer. We human beings cannot live without hope. So, we rejoice in celebrating the Nativity of the Lord on Christmas Day. God fulfilled His promise to us on the birthday of Jesus, when the Word became flesh and dwelled among us a mystery we refer to as the Incarnation of the Lord. We Christians believe that Jesus is the Messiah and Son of God, Risen Savior and Lord of all. Advent has a twofold character. It s a time of preparation for the First Coming of Christ at Christmas; and, the Second Coming of Christ at the end of the world when He will return in glory to judge the living and the dead. Advent is an opportune time to recall the cry of the early Christians: Come, Lord Jesus! (Rev. 22:20), a liturgical refrain similar to the Aramaic expression Marana tha, O Lord, come! that was probably used in the early Christian liturgy. It is a prayer for the early return of Christ, coming in glory at the end of time. May the season of Advent find us being reconciled with God, with others, and within ourselves by receiving the sacraments of Penance and Holy Eucharist. And, may the light of the Prince of Peace shine brightly in our hearts and homes during the Christmas season and throughout the year. A Look at Life in Uganda: A Mission Story from Pontifical Mission Societies: Life as a child in Uganda is very different. Like in many Mission countries, about 87% of the population in Uganda lives in villages in the country with no running water or electricity. Before going to school, children may have to sweep, pick vegetables or fetch water. Once the chores are done, children can get ready for school. In the rural villages, children usually walk to school, which may be up to an hour or more away. Lunch is the main meal of the day and hungry students eat matooke [green vegetable banana], beans and millet (a fast-growing cereal plant that can be grown in areas with poor soil). When children in a parish in the Archdiocese of Boston learned about a child s life in Uganda, specifically in the Diocese of Jinja, they were inspired to run a lemonade stand to help the children in this country. But the story doesn t end there... the children of Jinja, after hearing the story of the help they were receiving from the United States, felt such gratitude and generosity that they made World Mission Rosary bracelets and other jewelry, home-made soap and sold tea and fruit juice to sell to their fellow students and parishioners and raised the equivalent of $38.57 for the Missionary Childhood Association! Can you and your family respond as the children of Jinja with an attitude of gratitude for families in Mission lands? Thanksgiving may be over but count your blessings and pass them on learn how at phillymissions.org. Did You Know? A Thanksgiving feast in America averages about $5/person* In Mission Lands, $4 can buy bread for ten children for one week $5 can provide milk for one child for an entire month Show an Attitude of Gratitude during this Extraordinary Year of Mission *American Farm Bureau Federation Statistics, 2018 Epiphany of Our Lord Church - Dec. 2, 2018 First Advent

5 Retirement Fund for Religious Appeal Sister Maureen MacElderry, S.S.J. Pulpit Announcement Nov. 18, 2018 In an address to women and men Religious, Pope Francis said, If consecrated life is to maintain its prophetic mission and its appeal, it must keep its freshness and the novelty of the centrality of Jesus, maintain the attraction of spirituality and the strength of the mission, show the beauty of following Christ, and radiate hope and joy. These words are embodied in the lives of our retired Sisters, including our many Sisters who reside in our retirement home, Saint Joseph Villa in Flourtown. They have followed Jesus through many years of ministry, doing their best to stay close to him and share his love and compassion wherever they were missioned. Now their primary ministry is prayer for our Church and our world. They radiate the hope and joy that comes from knowing that God is faithful to each and every one of us, and they share these gifts each day. It is a joy to see our parishioners from Epiphany doing their much appreciated work as volunteers at our Villa. Thank you for your kindness to our Sisters and the time you spend with them. On the weekend of Dec. 1-2, we invite you to consider supporting our Sisters and so many others like them through the Retirement Fund for Religious Appeal. This collection helps both retired and active women and men Religious. Through the generosity of good people like yourselves across the country, religious congregations receive grants to help fund retirement needs of older Religious who received no or minimal retirement benefits for their years of ministry. The grants also help make it possible for active members to work where they are needed without the worry of earning salaries large enough to support those working in ministries as volunteers or the ministry of prayer and presence. In addition to your financial support, please consider these invitations as well: Please pray with and for women and men Religious, that we may be faithful witnesses of God s presence and love. Think about encouraging the young men and women in your lives to consider religious life. In this season of giving thanks and of Christmas cards and memories, call, , or write to a Religious who has influenced your life. This reminder that they have made a difference would be a special gift to them this Christmas. I pray that the Spirit of the Lord will rest upon you, providing all you need to live out your mission on this earth with great hope and joy. May the coming days of Advent bring you and those you love many blessings. Thank you. Epiphany of Our Lord Church - Dec. 2, 2018 First Advent
6 Holy Rosary Review Our 6th graders are studying the Civil War. As a culminating project, each student penned a Slave Journal. Their first person accounts depicted what they would have seen and felt as a teenager living as a slave in Virginia in the 1860 s. These journals stir many emotions in their readers. Our 7th grade and Kindergarten classes are collaborating on science experiments. One activity was a mixed group of 12 and 5-year-olds who created tornadoes in a jar by combining water, vinegar, dish detergent and blue dye. After shaking the jar to get the effect of a tornado, they added sand to represent the debris evident during this weather event. This collaboration begins with two 7th graders choosing a topic, researching it and supplying the needed materials, and then presenting their lesson to the other students. Once the little ones return to their classroom, the 7th graders critique each lesson. What an awesome learning experience for all! Altar and Chapel Cleaners Needed Volunteers are needed to assist with keeping the adoration chapel and church altar clean. The chapel is cleaned every other Monday before Mass; and, the altar, every Friday after Mass. Each volunteer only cleans once every few weeks. The 2019 schedule will be mailed out mid-december. Contact Nicole Zimmerman at (267) Thank you! Lighthouse Media Kiosk Visit the Lighthouse Media Kiosk in the vestibule of church for Advent resources and Christmas gifts for all ages! From the Pastor: Advent has a two-fold character, for it is a time of preparation for the Solemnities of Christmas, in which the First Coming of the Son of God to humanity is remembered, and likewise a time when, by remembrance of this, minds and hearts are led to look forward to Christ s Second Coming at the end of time. For these two reasons, Advent is a period of devout and expectant delight (Universal Norms for the Liturgical Year and the Calendar, 39). From the Children: Signed up to be an altar server. Said my prayers. Cleaned the kitchen. I babysat. Pregnancy Hotline Pregnant and need help?
