2 From the Pastor The purpose of religious liberty is to create the context for true freedom, Archbishop Chaput said in his homily during the closing Mass for the Fortnight for Freedom, July 4, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. Religious liberty is a foundational right. It s necessary for a good society. But it can never be sufficient for human happiness. It s not an end in itself. In the end, we defend religious liberty in order to live the deeper freedom that is discipleship in Jesus Christ. What good is religious freedom, consecrated in the law, if we don t then use that freedom to seek God with our whole mind and soul and strength? And yet, the political and legal effort to defend religious liberty as vital as it is belongs to as much greater struggle to master and convert our own hearts, and to live for God completely, without alibis or self delusion. The only question that finally matters is this one: Will we live wholeheartedly for Jesus Christ? If so, then we can be a source of freedom for the world. If not, nothing else will do. (Fratres Scholarum Christianorum), Director of Development for the Brothers of the Christian Schools, District of Easter North America, will speak at all Masses next weekend, Aug 4-5, on behalf of our annual Missionary Cooperation Appeal, sponsored by the Pontifical Mission Societies. RCLAM develops and oversees policies and programs on formation for Mission, supports and expands Mission activities and ministries, and creates greater partnerships within and outside the Lasallian world. It is a demonstration of association in action. 3 St. John Baptist de La Salle Christian Brothers Founder ecclesiastical power. John Baptist de La Salle was born on April 30, 1651 in Reims, France, during the reign of Louis XIV. The eldest of 11 children, De La Salle was raised in the midst of privilege and modest wealth, and at the age of 11 made known his intention to enter the priesthood. At 16, De La Salle was named Canon of the Reims Cathedral, a position of great honor and financial benefit, and one that placed him on a course for high In March 1679, a chance encounter with Adrien Nyel, a layman and an administrator of social services for the poor, met the young priest at the doorway of a convent the two men happened to be visiting. De La Salle was recruited by Nyel to assist with the opening of a parish school for poor boys. It was a reluctant first step on a journey that led De La Salle to new places he never envisioned for himself, including the founding of many more schools for poor boys and a religious community of lay teachers men he called Brothers to conduct those schools. Led by God from one commitment to another, De La Salle gradually found himself immersed in the world of the poor and their desperate need for education. Challenged by his Brothers to rely on Providence, he resigned his canonry in Reims and, over the next 30 years, established a wide array of institutions to meet the needs of the poor in France. De La Salle was regarded as an educational innovator because of his insistence that children be taught practical subjects and religion in their native tongue rather than Latin, and because of his use of the simultaneous method of instruction in lieu of private tutorials. He was, above all, a visionary who considered schools as communities of faith. Teachers are ambassadors of Christ and ministers of grace, he later wrote, who stand in a providential and privileged relationship with their students. De la Salle died on April 7, His untiring faith and zeal inspired a modest revolution in Christian education in his day and continues to stir the hearts of educators everywhere. De La Salle was canonized a saint on May 24, 1900 and proclaimed patron of all teachers of youth by Pope Pius XII on May 15, Who are the Brothers? The Brothers of the Christian Schools is a religious congregation of lay men who are committed to providing the young, especially those who are economically poor, with a human and Christian education. Together with over 70,000 Lasallian partners in almost a thousand educational ministries in 82 countries, the Brothers continue this vision of their founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle. The donation was part of the operating budget for the Archdiocese. This donation has been eliminated from the archdiocesan budget for the new Fiscal Year as part of an overall reduction in expenses to reduce the operating deficit. For Fiscal Year , the special collection for the support of The Catholic University of America is to be taken up in all the parishes of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The principal reason for that may be that it was seen as anticipating the Eucharist, and the final banquet in the kingdom. 7 Legion of Mary The Legion of Mary of our parish continues to visit all the homes Catholic and non-catholic, as part of our Evangelization Program. When they call on your family, please receive them kindly into your homes, as you would receive Christ. Epiphany Parish s Legion of Mary meets every Thursday from 6-7:30 p.m. in Room 3 of the Parish Center. All are welcome! Visit a junior Legion of Mary meeting any Wednesday at 4:45 p.m. at the Legion building, 510 Green St., Norristown. Meet Catholic kids, pray the rosary, visit the sick and elderly. Frozen Casserole Program Changes The Frozen Casserole Ministry has made some changes to the program to better serve the needs of the hungry in our area. The collection will now be held on the first Sunday of each month from 10:30 to 11:30 a. m. in the Rectory Meeting Room. The casseroles will be delivered to the Patrician Society in Norristown who distribute them to needy families. Casseroles can still be placed in the Rectory Meeting Room freezer anytime. Perpetual Adoration Chapel In order to keep our Perpetual Adoration Chapel open 24/7, we need your help. Please ASK a family member or friend to consider spending time with our Eucharistic Lord Jesus. He is our companion, our divine physician and Good Shepherd. You can come to HIM, to praise and adore HIM or to pour out one s heart to HIM, to ask for inspiration, to be consoled and comforted, to ask for favors and guidance, and to give thanks. OFFICE REQUESTS To register in the parish, arrange for a baptism, or request a Certificate of Eligibility for sponsorship at baptism or confirmation, contact the rectory during office hours. Also, please advise our office of any change of address, telephone number or family status. Baptism Baptisms are celebrated after the 11:30 a.m. Mass every Sunday, with the option of baptism during the 11:30 a.m. Mass on the fifth Sunday of the month. Both parents must attend a Pre-Jordan class, which is held the first Wednesday of every month. Pre-Registration for the class is required by contacting the rectory. Sponsors are required to submit a Certificate of Eligibility from their parish two weeks prior to the baptism. Marriage Notify the priest of your intention to marry at least six months before the date of the wedding to assure sufficient preparation and to arrange for Pre-Cana sessions. Pre-Cana Days are held in April and October. ANOINTING OF THE SICK First Saturday of the month during 8:30 a.m. Mass or by special request. Please notify the rectory as soon as possible when any parishioner becomes seriously ill or is admitted to the hospital.
