Epiphany of Our Lord Church Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord Apr. 16, 2017

WELCOME and Happy Easter The fifty days from the Sunday of the Resurrection to Pentecost Sunday are celebrated in joy and exultation as one feast day, indeed as one great Sunday (St. Athanasius, Epistula festalis: PG 26, 1366). These are the days above all others in which the Alleluia is sung (Universal Norms, 22). The meaning of EASTER The meaning of Easter is that God loves us and cares about us, desiring only the best and highest good for us. He s the God of peace, love, and joy. He s the source of every good and perfect gift. The greatest gift God gave us is His Son, Jesus Christ. In Him God s grace and love are extended to us to meet all of our needs. May you come to know His blessings in your life; in every way in everything. May His life in you be the reason for your Easter celebration. He who has the Son has life. -1 John 5:12 Easter Reflection Josef Pieper once remarked that the human capacity for festivity arises from the ability to affirm all creation as good-from the ability to embrace, in one resounding yes, the length and breath, the heights and depths of our experience in this world. We can hear this yes in Mozart s music-the play of light and shadow in the later piano concerti; the poignant song of an oboe rising above a steady pulse in a divertimento for winds. We can hear it in the delighted squeals of a child as its face is licked by the moist tongue and hot breath of a new puppy. We can hear it in the contented, prayerful whispers of an elderly woman-full of love, grace and years-as she prepares to meet death with quiet courage and dignity. Saying yes to all of life, letting all of it in-that is festivity s sustaining source. But there s the rub. Few of us can say yes to anything for very long. We live, after all, in an intensely mobile culture of fast food, faster cars, disposable diapers and planned obsolescence. Our greatest goal (as Andy Warhol once quipped) is to be famous for fifteen minutes. Small wonder that many in our society feel so isolated and lonely, so unable to connect, so incapable of forming relationships that last. Small wonder, too, that as a people we find ourselves increasingly bored, angry and violent-enraged and terrified by the awful emptiness that seems to stretch in every direction around us. Given such cultural conditions, the Christian celebration of the blessed Pentecost will strike many as mad indeed. Fifty days of dwelling in the paschal mystery! Fifty days of surrendering in joyful faith and love as the Spirit of God takes possession of our lives! Fifty days of mystagogy, of walking with the neophytes ever more deeply into the baptismal mysteries of death and resurrection. Good heaven! What an order! One reason why such a prolonged celebration strikes us as difficult-if not downright absurd-is that we tend to link feasts and holidays with mindless hoopla. Party time, for many, is an invitation to obliterate consciousness, to get wasted, to veg out, to forget. But, a season of Christian festival is precisely the opposite. It is a time of intensified consciousness, finely tuned awareness, awakened memory. The great fifty days of Pentecost are not an unwelcome, unrealistic, obligation to party on, even if we don t feel like it, but an invitation to explore more deeply the weather of the heart, to awaken our memory of God s presence and power in our lives, to look more closely at all the rich and varied textures of creation. In short, Pentecost is a season for learning how to say yes in a culture that wants to keep on saying no. Taken from The Blessed Pentecost, Nathan Mitchell, in Assembly, Vol. 20:1. First, I want to extend my prayerful best wished to you and your parish as we prepare to celebrate the glory of Easter. May every grace of this beautiful season be with you and your loved ones. Second, I want to offer my sincere gratitude to you and your parish staff for the generosity and kind hospitality shown to me during my visit to confer the Sacrament of Confirmation in March. Your warm welcome made my brief visit very pleasant. Thank you again for your kindness to me and please keep me in your prayers as we meditate on the Paschal Mystery during these holy days in the Church. Asking God to bless you and keep you well, Sincerely in Our Lord, Most Rev. Joseph F. Martino Bishop Emeritus of Scranton

STATE OF THE PARISH ADDRESS by Father Quindlen Apr. 2, 2017 As we draw near to the end of our annual Lenten journey of prayer, fasting and almsgiving in preparation for the solemn and sacred liturgies of Holy Week and Easter, and after consultation with our Parish Pastoral and Finance Councils, our Parish Business Manager and Parish Office Staff, I offer you the following State of the Parish Address. Thank you for your faith in God, your commitment to the Church, and your loyalty to our parish. I am grateful for your responsible stewardship of time, talent and treasure. And, I appreciate your collaboration in my priestly life and ministry as we aspire to serve the needs of our parish and our community. May God reward your generous spirit. On your behalf, we say thank you to Father Kelly for sharing his priestly life and ministry with us. And, we thank our deacons for sharing with us their ministry of the liturgy, the Word and charity. We also express our gratitude to the members of our advisory bodies the Parish Finance Council and the Parish Pastoral Council; and, the leaders and members of our parish committees, organizations and liturgical ministries; likewise, our Coordinator of Religious Education, catechists and aides and our Parish Youth Minister; also, our Director of Music and our Maintenance Supervisor; in addition, our Administrative Assistant and our Coordinator of Internet Technology who staff our Parish Office. On behalf of the Governing Board of Pastors and our four partner parishes, we acknowledge the faculty, administration and staff of Holy Rosary Regional Catholic School. Mrs. Hoban, founding principal, who is presently pursuing studies for her doctoral degree in education, five years ago embraced the daunting challenge, formidable task and awesome responsibility of forming one faculty from three schools, and uniting those students together with Conshohocken Catholic Elementary School students, when our parish was chosen by the Archdiocese as the site for the new regional school. The Governing Board, Principal, and School Business Manager meet quarterly. The lay leadership representative of our parish community, in the persons of our Parish Pastoral Council members, began the current academic year meeting with Parish Finance Council members and the leaders of our parish committees and organizations, along with our Parish Office staff. At that meeting and subsequent meetings, I identified for discussion, discernment, debate and deliberation the following pastoral concerns: Forty Hours Devotion, October Count, Interfaith Thanksgiving Eve Service, 60th Anniversary celebration, Parish Pastoral Council nomination and election process, Washing of the Feet on Holy Thursday, Mass of Appreciation and reception for volunteers and staff, and Adoration Chapel. Our annual October Count, which I graph in our parish bulletin for your information, reveals that in October 2004, an average of 1600 worshipers attended Mass here on the weekend. In 2016, an average of 750 worshipers attended Mass here on a weekend. Our annual Forty Hours Devotion last October hosted guest speaker Monsignor Majoros, pastor of the partnered parishes of Sacred Heart, Clifton Heights, and St. Charles Borromeo, Drexel Hill. Monsignor Majoros was the only priest of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia designated by Pope Francis as a Missionary of Mercy for the Year of Mercy. We hosted a reception with him in the Parish Center after devotions. We also hosted the annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Eve Service, sponsored by the Plymouth-Whitemarsh Ministerium. Rabbi Ettman of Congregation Or Ami in Lafayette Hill preached the homily. We hosted a reception in Grady Hall following the service. Our ministerium includes two Catholic churches, congregations from five other Christian denominations, a synagogue, a Quaker Meeting House and a Community Support Center. We spiritual leaders meet over lunch on the third Thursday of the month in the Plymouth Meeting Mall at Church on the Mall. We colleagues in ministry, who are called by God to lead, teach and serve you, respect one another s faith traditions, enjoy one another s company, and encounter one another in sincere dialogue and lively discussions.

STATE OF THE PARISH ADDRESS CONT D This past week we visited the North Penn Mosque in Lansdale for an interfaith dialogue followed by congregational prayers. The mosque also holds educational programs, social activities and peace efforts of all faiths in conformity with the teachings of Islam. Muslims pray five times a day, comparable to the five times a day we Catholic Christians pray the Roman Ritual s Divine Office, also called the Liturgy of the Hours. We clergy are obliged to prayer daily the Office of Readings (Matins), Morning Prayer (Lauds), Daytime Prayer (either Midmorning, Midday or Midafternoon), Evening Prayer (Vespers) and Night Prayer (Compline). Judaism, Christianity and Islam, the world s three religions that believe in one God, all trace our origin to Abraham, our father in faith, as we refer to him in the Roman Canon the first of our four Eucharistic Prayers. On the occasion of our 60th Anniversary on Jan. 6, we thanked and praised God for his blessings, favors and graces to our parish. We are grateful to those who prepared the celebration and those who participated in the celebration throughout the day, joined us for Evening Prayer and Benediction, and attended the reception in Grady Hall. January a year ago, Pope Francis directed that the full meaning of the Washing of the Feet on Holy Thursday might be expressed to those who participate, so that pastors may select a small group of the faithful to represent the variety and the unity of each part of the people of God. Such small groups can be made up of men and women, and it is appropriate that they consist of people young and old, healthy and sick, clerics, consecrated men and women and laity. We look forward to our Mass of Appreciation on Wednesday of Easter Week to thank our volunteers and staff for their commitment to assist us. This past month we celebrated the 19th Anniversary of Perpetual Adoration in our Adoration Chapel. In the centerspread of our parish bulletin for the 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time, on the occasion of our annual Forty Hours Devotion, we featured an Adoration Chapel update including an introduction, history, renovations and additions proposed in 2000, regulations for exposition of the Holy Eucharist, and the four-part rite of Eucharistic Exposition and Benediction. We published then, and weekly since then, the hours that the Blessed Sacrament is left unattended. According to the Vatican s Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments, the 2004 Instruction on the Eucharist (Redemptionis Sacramentum) insisted: Still, the Most Holy Sacrament, when exposed, must never be left unattended even for the briefest space of time. It shall therefore be arranged that at least some of the faithful always be present at fixed times, even if they take alternating turns. Since our parish is no longer in compliance with that Vatican directive, and, therefore, we can no longer provide a secure building and safe environment for adorers 24 hours day, seven days a week, we need to address the situation. Our archdiocesan Office for Parish Service and Support, after reviewing our Annual Parish Financial Report for the Fiscal Year Ended June 30, 2015, contacted me that summer to request a meeting. That office offers guidance on parish operations for budgeting, accounting and financial reporting regarding archdiocesan policies, procedures and best practices. In attendance at the meeting in our rectory were the director of the Office of Parish Service and Support and a staff member, the director of our archdiocesan Human Resources Office, a parish staff member, a Parish Finance Council member and myself. The offices informed us that of the 45 parishes whose annual budget was between $1M and $1.5M, we had the highest percentage ratio of employee salaries to operating income. The offices recommended that I restructure our parish staff to achieve long-term viability. Subsequently, I attended several meetings at our Archdiocesan Pastoral Center with the director of those offices and their staff members. I accepted their recommendations and began by reducing the position of Parish Business Manager to part-time; and, hiring our present Parish Business Manager, Paul Harvitz. Paul is also Parish Business Manager part-time at St. Helena s Parish in Olney, where he assists the pastor who was also given responsibility for the neighboring property of Incarnation of Our Lord, when that parish closed. He has experience collaborating with the archdiocesan offices I previously mentioned, and participates in diocesan-sponsored parish business manager meetings. He has assisted me in restructuring seven other positions on our staff. Since the two car traffic accident happened on our property in December, resulting in the loss of our outdoor sign, our Parish Business Manager, after receiving the police report, is collaborating with the insurance company of the drivers, claims adjusters, sign companies, landscapers, and a construction company. We appreciate your patience during litigation as we continue to negotiate a settlement and await the outcome removing the debris, restoring the landscaping and replacing the sign. We are most grateful that neither driver sustained serious injury.

Boy Scouts Adventure! Leadership! Values! Advancement! Troop 117 serves boys ages 10 through 17 from the Whitpain, Plymouth Meeting, Whitemarsh, and Conshohocken areas by preparing boys for life. The troop meets Thursdays year round at 7 p.m. in Grady Hall. By imagining, planning then doing their own service projects, Boy Scouts learn the value of hard work, and experience the thrill of seeing it pay off. Add in outdoor adventures and scouting gives boys all the experience they need to become men. All Troop activities are conducted under the supervision of at least two trained adult leaders. The Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmasters have all undergone the Youth Protection training required by Boy Scouts of America. Parents are always welcome to participate in Troop activities. The Troop welcomes boys of all ability levels and interests. Contact the Scoutmaster: Roger Milton at rgm1@msn.com or visit Why Get Involved in the Parish?
