Please notify the Parish Office as soon as possible when any parishioner becomes seriously ill or is admitted to the hospital. Baptism Baptisms are celebrated after the 10:30 a.m. Mass on Sundays upon request. Both first-time parents need to attend a Pre-Jordan class, which is held the first Wednesday of every month. Pre-Registration for the class is required by contacting the Parish Office. Sponsors not from Epiphany are required to submit a Certificate of Eligibility from their parish two weeks prior to the Baptism. Matrimony Notify the Parish Office of your intention to marry at least six months before the date of the wedding to assure sufficient preparation and to arrange for Pre-Cana sessions. Miraculous Medal Perpetual Novena After Mass every Saturday. Holy Communion for the Sick and Homebound Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are available to bring Communion to the sick and homebound. The Parish Pastoral Council cooperates with parish committees and parish organizations, according to archdiocesan guidelines. Parish staff members and parish committees are a resource to the Parish Pastoral Council (Rationale, Principles and Guidelines). Our Parish Pastoral Council will meet with leaders of parish committees and parish organizations for an Information Session on Tuesday, Nov. 27, at 7 p.m. in the Parish Center. Blessing of Sacristans The Blessing of Sacristans will take place next Sunday, Dec. 2, at the 10:30 a.m. Mass. Sacristans prepare and maintain that which is necessary for divine worship (1858). The General Instruction of the Roman Missal states, A liturgical function is also exercised by the sacristan, who diligently arranges the liturgical books, the vestments and other things that are necessary for the celebration of Mass (105). Here in our own Archdiocese of Philadelphia, Saint John Neumann and Saint Katharine Drexel stand out prominently and we revere their memory. These two notable figures invite us to reflect upon the ministry and service of those unsung consecrated religious, so very many throughout the decades, that have built up our local Church. These consecrated persons, men and women, have lived out their sacred calling in exemplary fashion. By their service in education, health ministry, caring for the most needy, and in contemplative life they have been visible instruments of God s grace. Living out daily their faithful commitment, they have enabled persons of every background to accept and rejoice in the Gospel. With gratitude for their dedicated service and yet recognizing the situation confronting so many congregations with declining vocations and caring for their senior members, each year our Archdiocese participates in the national Retirement Fund for Religious Collection. This collection provides an opportunity for us to demonstrate gratitude and personal concern for how they have affected each of us. As Archbishop and as a Religious, I ask prayers for our consecrated persons who strive to live out their special calling. Likewise, I encourage your generous support for this national collection scheduled for December 1-2, May the Lord reward your generosity and may His peace fill your hearts. 5 Retirement Fund for Religious Appeal Sister Francis Christi Beck, S.S.J. Pulpit Announcement Nov. 17, 2018 It is a beautiful sunny and brisk November afternoon. As I enjoy reflecting on nature in it s finest glory, my mind and heart are remembering the years of living life as a Religious Sister of Saint Joseph. I am grateful for the men and women Religious that I knew so well who fostered my vocation. You have had the opportunity to know many religious Sisters of Saint Joseph who taught and ministered at this wonderful parish of Epiphany of our Lord. Presently, the Sisters of Saint Joseph number 690. We are dedicated to a mission of unity and reconciliation with a special concern for the poor. Our ministries include education, social, spiritual and health care ministries in 15 states and Canada. We sponsor Chestnut Hill College, Mount Saint Joseph Academy, Saint Joseph Villa, Flourtown, the SSJ Welcome Center and many other good works. As the number of elderly religious increases the newer members are fewer. The median age is 76. In the past, Religious lived in communities where stipends sufficed even if they were low. As you so well know, the medical costs have taken a toll on all of us. The three areas of greatest concern for aging and ill Religious are lack of funds, rising costs of living and changing demographics. The elderly are those who carry history, that carry doctrine, that carry the faith and give it to us as an inheritance (Pope Francis Homily - Nov. 19, 2013). We are living in a world society that changes quickly each day and security is not forever. The economy, forces of nature, national and international issues, personal situations and concerns abound daily. We are together in all of these happenings that bring stress and need to our lives. In June of 2018, the National Religious Retirement Office (NRRO) assisted 360 communities with $25 million. The Philadelphia Archdiocese Contributions were $106, of this amount. We are grateful for your ever-faithful generosity to this Appeal. At this time I am indebted to your willingness to do three things: Pray for those Religious men and women who have been a part of your life; Remember to call, or send a card for Thanksgiving and Christmas; Share a monetary donation to the annual Retirement Fund for Religious Appeal. Thank you for your faithful witness of God s presence everyday with family, parishioners, friends, neighbors and companions in the work place. Twenty-eight K-8 children sang at Epiphany on Sunday, Nov. 18, at the 10:30 a.m. Mass. Their voices, smiles, reverence, and enthusiasm brought traditional hymns to life. The Epiphany congregation, along with visiting Holy Rosary families and teachers, joined in with our singers. St. Cecilia, our first grade s saint of the month, was the first to proclaim that singing in church is praying twice to God. God must have been very happy the day of their visit! Thank you to Father Quindlen for welcoming the Singers to Epiphany and Connie Steuer for playing the piano. The Singers will soon be visiting St. Titus, St. Paul and Holy Saviour. Altar and Chapel Cleaners Needed Volunteers are needed to assist with keeping the adoration chapel and church altar clean. The chapel is cleaned every other Monday before Mass; and, the altar, every Friday after Mass. Tasks include dusting, sweeping and vacuuming. Each volunteer only cleans once every few weeks.
