2 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Service, Excellence, Integrity - Faithful Citizenship I have just returned from watching my son Michael fly his last flight in an F-15 Strike Eagle. He has served our country in the Air Force as a fighter pilot for the last 21 years which has included four deployments to Iraq and one to Afghanistan. He retires as a Lieutenant Colonel. I am, of course, very proud of his achievements. What touched me most about this experience was the words he shared with those he is leaving behind to continue their work in the Air Force.. He spoke about the most important things to him in his years of serving our country: service, excellence, and integrity. On the occasion of our celebration of America s independence, may I suggest that we reflect on these ideals as they relate to us as Americans (or nationals of another country, which some of us are) and as Catholics. In this election year, we are called to be ambassadors for our faith in all that we do, but most especially in our role as citizens of the Unites States of America. We follow Jesus and let his teachings and the teachings of the Church guide our lives. But this is not something we do only on Sunday when we come to worship. It must carry through to our lives seven days a week, including in our responsibility as citizens of this nation. We have a responsibility to serve our Church: roles in ministry, financial support, service to the poor and those in need. We also have a responsibility to serve our country through our financial support and, at minimum, through our participation in choosing those who represent us and voicing our opinions on proposed legislation, always remembering who we are as Catholics. This is our call to Faithful Citizenship. We need to be informed and aware of all the issues before us and prayerfully consider how we vote. Pope Francis tells us, We need to participate for the common good.... Good Catholics immerse themselves in politics by offering the best of themselves so that the leader can govern. We also must seek a path of excellence in all that we do, never settling for the minimum or just enough. And we must have integrity: being true to ourselves and to what we believe in, never accepting compromise in those beliefs but standing up for all that Jesus has called us to be and to do. Our annual budget also runs from July to June. We are so very grateful to all who supported the work of our Parish over the past 12 months. Each year, however, the expenses involved in all of our parish operations and programs increase, and as always, we depend on our parishioners to help meet these expenses. Our weekly Sunday Offertory goal is now $12,000. This is the amount we need each week in order to meet all of our financial responsibilities. We are asking you to consider a 5% increase in your weekly or monthly donation. This will assure that our parish will continue to fulfill our mission of living and sharing the Gospel through worship, education and service, as well as being able to meet all of our financial responsibilities. Matt, Pastor Mission Cooperative Appeal 2016 Next weekend, July 9 & 10, we welcome Sr. Anastacia Shibak from The Sisterhood of St. Elizabeth in Belarus to our parish to be our 2016 Mission Cooperative speaker. The Sisterhood was founded in honor of the holy martyr Grand Princess Elizabeth and was established in Minsk, the capital of Belarus, in The sisters provide spiritual, social and financial assistance to over 2,000 patients, many of whom are children, who stay at the National Psychiatric Clinic. The sisters help with medicine, hygiene kits, wheelchairs, computers and food. Your generosity in this annual collection will provide support for the sisters in their ministry. Special envelopes are provided. If you were not prepared to donate today, please take one home and bring it with you to Mass next Sunday. Beautiful Hidden Villa Summer Camp Volunteers are needed mostly to drive 3 day campers from East Palo Alto to camp. The first camp session started June 20 and the last session ends August 19.
