2 Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time 3 Reasons Your Teen Needs to Get Involved at STA If you are a youth in 6th grade through 12th grade, then fear not: Youth Ministry is starting soon, combined with a whole slew of events and activities that will help keep your sanity and spiritual life in check! Let s face it: being a teenager is more challenging than ever! As we grow closer to the EDGE (6th- 8th Grade) and Life Teen (High School) kickoff day on Sunday, October 4th, I would like to offer 3 key reasons why young people should check us out. EDGE and Life Teen are about COMMUNITY Parents: Do you remember what it was like to be a teen, or the on-going struggle of figuring out where you belong? Even as early as the sixth grade, young people are beginning that search for self-identity and community in their lives. The wonderful thing about being involved in youth group is that one quickly discovers that one isn t alone! EDGE and Life Teen are modeled to show our youth that the Church is their home in a world that is constantly shifting and redefining priorities. EDGE and Life Teen are about FAITH FORMATION EDGE and Life Teen go beyond just religious education by personally challenging middle school youth to foster a relationship with Jesus. By breaking open Sacred Scripture and diving deep into the Catholic faith, the Mass and the Sacraments, our youth begin to realize their identity as children of God. We understand that it is only through the lens of God s love that we can more fully understand the Church s teachings. The Youth Ministry environment provides our teens with the support needed to face the challenges of middle school and high school life. EDGE and Life Teen are about POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS The heart of EDGE and Life Teen Ministry is about building positive, Christcentered relationships. Our dedicated group of volunteers, known as the Core Team, devotes countless hours of training, planning and praying to guide all that we say and do back to Jesus Christ. It is our hope this year that the youth begin to see the Church as a positive, welcoming influence in their lives, and to send them out as future leaders of faith outside of our Youth Groups. I invite you to check out the Faith Formation section of our website to download the latest meeting dates and event flyers for the EDGE and Life Teen programs ( Aside from our Sunday meetings we will also plan to do some exciting off-site events. Stanley Year of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy The Holy Door is opened to evoke the concept of forgiveness, which is the main focus of a Holy Year. According to Mondo Vaticano, a mini-encyclopedia published by the Vatican, the designation of a Holy Door may be traced back to the ancient Christian practice of when sinners were given public penances to perform before receiving absolution. The penitents were not allowed to enter a church before completing the penance, but they were solemnly welcomed back in when their penance was fulfilled. Still today, Holy Year pilgrims enter a basilica through the Holy Door as a sign of their repentance and re-commitment to a life of faith. The book says both the opening and closing of the Holy Door take place with formal ceremonies to mark the period of time set aside for men and women to sanctify their souls. Special Collection for Migrants & Refugees This Sunday In light of the ongoing crisis involving migrants and refugees currently streaming into Europe, and given the Holy Father s request that the Church respond concretely to assist these refugees, Bishop McGrath asks that each parish take up a special collection to support the work of Catholic Relief Services (CRS). Spirituality Tuesday Assembly - September 29th THEOSIS: Distinctive Features of Eastern Christian Spirituality. Our guest speaker will be Father Anthony Hernandez of St. Basil the Great Byzantine Catholic Parish. St. Basil's Byzantine Rite Catholic Church, shares St. Albert the Great Church with our parish, and Father Anthony is the Pastor. He will survey the basic aspects of the spiritual traditions of the Christian East shared by Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches. There will be some comparing and contrasting of Eastern & Western Christian spiritualties. This will be an interesting and informative evening. We meet from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at St. Albert the Great Hospitality Center. Legacy Day - October 3rd at St. Christopher Parish Join the Catholic Community Foundation and Bishop Patrick J. McGrath for prayer, breakfast and a discussion about legacy. This multi-workshop event includes presentations on the topics of: Legacy Letters; Planning a Catholic Funeral; Catholic Perspectives: The Ethics of Dying Trends in Family; Financial Planning. Saturday, Oct. 3 from 9am - 12pm at St. Christopher Parish, 2278 Booksin Ave, San Jose. RSVP at Blessing of the Animals - October 4th On Sunday, October 4th at 1pm we will celebrate our traditional blessing of animals in the parking lot area outside of St. Albert the Great Church. Bring your pets in a cage, on a leash, or in a bowl. This is a great time to reinforce to our children the gifts which are their pets and the responsibility we all have in caring for God s creatures.
