2 The Bible - A Book For The Family 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the promulgation of the Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation (Dei Verbum), the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has set aside the week of November as National Bible Week and is encouraging all of us to take some time to reflect on the importance of Sacred Scriptures and to revisit and renew our understanding of the power of the Word of God in our lives. The more deeply the Word is rooted in the home, the more the entire family grows in relationship to Christ and to one another. One of our primary goals for STA-Kids Faith Formation this year is to encourage our young people to know and appreciate The Bible as a primary resource for prayer and for getting to know God. Each child has a Bible in the classroom, and many of the children are taking them home each week to continue exploring the stories, people, and prayers they encounter in class. Through the stories of the Old Testament they learn how God has interacted with His people throughout history from the moment of Creation through times of trial and tribulation, triumph and celebration. The Old Testament provides us with amazing stories of people of great faith, prayers we can take to heart, and a fore-shadowing of the coming of Christ. In the New Testament they hear the story of Jesus: all that he said and did, and all that he asked us to do to follow him. There are also stories of the early Church, how it grew from a few dedicated believers to become the Church we know today, and important lessons given to the early Church in the form of letters that still speak to us and provide guidance for our lives. Through the entirety of the Bible, God speaks to us, for it is God s living Word, given to us through divine inspiration. We want our children to be comfortable with this amazing Book of Books so that it becomes an enduring part of their lives. Let us all make some time to revisit the Sacred Scriptures as the amazing resource for relationship with God that they are. Let us make certain that the bible has an honored place in our homes. But let us make certain that in that honored place it is not simply sitting collecting dust. Let us make time to read and pray with Scripture each and every day. Let us read together as a family and reflect on and share what we hear God saying to us. Let us find ways to study and understand Scripture through formal Bible studies. But, above all, let us recognize and honor the Word of God as a valuable and valued resource for growing in our faith Susan Olsen, Director of Catechetical Ministry z Please Pray ZFor the Sick & Homebound Fr. Stanley St. Thomas Aquinas Parish Spirituality Tuesday Assembly - November 10th THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES: The Church After the Resurrection An acclaimed video series with Sr. Laurie Brink O.P (Ph.D.) an associate professor of Biblical Studies at Catholic Theological Union as the presenter. She is a dynamic presenter who makes the material come alive. The Acts of the Apostles was the first history of Christianity-but it is so much more than that! No other work in the New Testament includes such a literary variety, covers so great a geographic and temporal expanse, or introduces as many characters. This will be our second session. Thus far, we have only covered the background of Acts and there is much more ground to cover. Please join us and follow in the footsteps of the apostles and disciples. Father Matt will be our host; there will be handouts and possibly a quiz. Don t miss this four-part series at Saint Albert the Great Hospitality Room; 7:00-8:30 pm. Special Collection Disaster Relief Next Sunday Understanding the donor fatigue that our parishioners may experience with multiple solicitations for the good causes that come our way, Bishop McGrath has authorized one collection, with proceeds to be forwarded from the Chancery to Catholic Relief Services, for victims of Hurricane Patricia, Typhoon Koppu (Lando), and the earthquake in Afghanistan/ Pakistan. We include this link to CRS here: experience-expertise-and-emergency-response-help-and-hope-people-crisis. Rite of Acceptance, Rite of Welcome Next Sunday at the 10:30am Mass at Our Lady of the Rosary we will Celebrate the Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens & the Rite of Welcome for the Baptized Preparing for Confirmation and/or Eucharist or Reception into the Full Communion of the Catholic Church. We will also celebrate a Ritual of Welcome at the 5pm Mass at St. Albert the Great for our young people preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation. This is our first time to meet our children, youth and adults who are on their journey toward the Easter Sacraments. November Food Drive You can donate food year-round in the baskets in the vestibules of the churches. During the month of November we ask you to be especially generous in your giving to our food collection program. Since the majority of the people we help are homeless, we ask for foods that are portable and highly nutritious: hearty soups or chili in flip top cans, Vienna sausage, boxes of crackers packed in small stacks, fruit cups, granola bars, juice pouches, and small bottles of water. Please remember to pick up a bag and fill it with holiday food to bring to the church for our Thanksgiving/Christmas food collection. International Dinner - November 14 The Hispanic community is holding their annual International Dinner from 5:00-8:00 pm on Saturday, November 14 at St. Elizabeth Seton Auditorium. Contact Maria de Jesus Gutierrez for more information and tickets at or mgutierrez@dsj.org
