2 "The Joy of Love" - Amoris Laetitia Fourth Sunday of Easter The following questions and answers may help to focus on some important points of Amoris Laetitia (AL), The Joy of Love: On Love in the Family, the Exhortation written by Pope Francis after the two Synods of Bishops on that topic in October, 2014 and October, This is the first in a series of questions and answers. What s new in this exhortation, Amoris Laetitia? AL draws on a long history of Church teaching and a very intense Synod experience. It draws on both new and old. What s new above all is an attitude of accompaniment. Pope Francis, like his predecessors, recognizes the complexity of modern family life, but he puts an added emphasis on the need for the Church and her ministers to be close to people no matter what their situation might be or how far from the Church they might feel: to understand, to accompany, to integrate, and to have their arms open especially for anyone who is hurting. (AL 311) AL is not simply a theoretical text with no connection to people s real problems. The very title suggests the positive thrust of the document. It continually offers concrete reminders of the beauty of family life, despite all the challenges this vocation can entail. Pope Francis writes eloquently about how forming a family means being part of God s dream, joining him in building a world where no one will feel alone. (AL 320) Fr. The ILM provides training and faith formation for lay leaders in the Church. The theological base for this program is found in the documents of the Second Vatican Council. Responding to their baptismal call, graduates return to their parish to serve in various leadership roles in Liturgy, Catechetics, Social Justice, Pastoral Care, as well as many others. We plan to continue sending lay persons to the Institute for Leadership in Ministry. Stanley St. Thomas Aquinas Parish Spirituality Tuesday - April 17 Movie Night: The Staircase starring Barbara Hershey and William Petersen This evening we will meet at Saint Elizabeth Seton Gym for a treat: a special movie presentation on the new media equipment installed there. Chosen by attendees at recent Spirituality Tuesdays, we will view: The Staircase, starring Barbara Hershey and William Petersen. Her faith made a miracle. His creation made a legend. Based on the legend of the miraculous stairway at the Sisters of Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, New Mexico, this is a life-affirming drama of hope and faith. Mother Madalyn s (Barbara Hershey) last wish is that her beloved chapel be completed. But when the carpenters built the chapel, they neglected to erect stairs to the choir loft, and now adding a staircase is impossible. Compassion and hard work may not be enough to make Mother Madalyn s dream a reality - it s going to take a special kind of miracle! Perhaps you have visited this very special place. St. Vincent de Paul Collection Next Week The goal of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is to offer tangible assistance to those in need on a person-to-person basis and to offer spiritual services. A key strength of the Society is in the personalized delivery of help. This aid may take the form of intervention, consultation or, often, through direct dollar or in-kind service. St. Vincent de Paul has thousands of volunteers all over the world, including at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish. Your generosity in next Sunday s 2nd collection will assist our own local conference of St. Vincent de Paul to help our neighbors in need. Envelopes will be provided in the pews. Parish Communications Although the Sunday Bulletin remains an important source of our parish communications, we also provide two other excellent sources of timely information: our parish website at and our weekly Friday morning ebulletin. The ebulletin is an initiative of our parish Communications Board, whose ministry it is to improve communications in our parish. It is sent to 410 parish families each Friday. Not just a copy of the Sunday paper bulletin, it includes reminders and more articles and notices than can fit in our Sunday bulletin. If you are interested in receiving the ebulletin on a weekly basis, send an request to clundin@stanford.edu and you will be added to our mailing list. Sign-Up for Our Online Giving Program You can automate your weekly donation. You can sign-up online by visiting and click the Online Giving icon on the homepage.
