2 Humus, Human, Humility Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Israelites, especially during the time of Jesus, were very particular about the sitting arrangements at the table during a meal. Meal celebration for them was also an occasion to discuss matters in their own small communities. One s place at the table determines how important he is in the community. That explains why in today s gospel people were struggling and competing about who can sit at the honorable place. Everybody wants to be important and great! Jesus saw this and he made use of that as an example to promote humility! Humility is one of the most beautiful words to describe God. God opted to go down to the level of humanity, being human like us. When God came to the earth, he didn t show up like a mighty warrior riding on a chariot of gold gloriously descending from high heavens. Rather, he was born in a form of a slave, a tiny creature sleeping in a manger - humility. This is a striking virtue that should mark the soul of every Christian follower. It is very interesting to note where the word humility came from. It was derived from an old word in Latin called humus. Humus means soil/dirt. We step on soil; we throw anything on the soil; Soil is dirty! Soil is nothing! But out of this nothing came something very valuable when God breathed on that humus! That humus became human. That is you and me. We came from soil. Originally we were nothing. What we are right now is all because of God s grace. We cannot boast of anything. Humility doesn t only describe God but also tells about the origin of humanity. When pride tries to take you over, bear in mind you are soil! Want to become Catholic?... Fr. Michael Gazzingan, Parochial Vicar Do you have an interest in becoming Catholic? Were you baptized as a child but have not received the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation? Our adult inquiry sessions continue all year long. For more information about the process, please call Susan Olsen (650) ext. 25, or Deacon Daniel Hernandez at dhernandez@dsj.org Z z Please Pray For the Sick & Homebound Fr. Your parish stands ready to help you in fulfilling this pledge. Matt, Pastor Catechists Needed!! We still have need for a couple of more catechists or aides, particularly at St. Albert the Great. Not just a copy of the Sunday paper bulletin, it includes reminders and more articles and notices than can fit in our Sunday bulletin. If you are interested in receiving the ebulletin on a weekly basis, send an request to ebulletin@paloaltocatholic.org. You will be added to "PaloAltoCatholic-EBulletin@googlegroups.com" which is used to send out the ebulletin each Friday morning.
