2 Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Catechetical Sunday September 16 This week we celebrate those who serve the as catechists. A catechist is a person who facilitates the process of faith formation, first by echoing the word of God in his or her own life and second by helping others to do so. (Joe Paprocki) Every Christian is a catechist in some way, whether as parent, sibling, co-worker, or friend. And every Christian is also a student/disciple as we continue to be formed in our faith throughout our lives in community with one another. At our Masses this weekend we will call forward those who have accepted the official role as catechists for our children, youth, and adults to be commissioned and blessed for their ministry. Catechists share their faith and share their experience of God. They take the people they work with on a faith journey and will walk with them along the pathway to a closer relationship with God. The true blessing of taking on this role is that by sharing with others, they, also, will grow in their faith. The transformers will be transformed. We should remember that all of us are called to be a catechist by virtue of our Baptism: to hand on the faith and be a witness to the Gospel to everyone we encounter, especially the friends and family around us. This weekend is a chance for us to rededicate ourselves to this mission as a community of faith. We give thanks to God for the dedicated people who have stepped forward and said, Yes to the call to serve our community as catechists in our faith formation programs. May this new year be for all of us a time for renewal of a relationship with Jesus, faithful participation in the sacramental life of the, and a renewed commitment to our faith. Susan L. Spirituality Tuesday Returns - September 18 ATHEISM AND WHAT WE MEAN BY "GOD" How should Christians respond to atheism? How can we draw people back to God? On Tuesday, September 18 we will watch the first in a sixpart film series. Request for October Prayer Services by Bishop McGrath Many people - here, throughout our country and around the world - have offered suggestions on various ways the Catholic community can respond to the newly-surfaced reports of sexual abuse of minors by priests, as well as the role of bishops in covering up and re-assigning predator priests. Key among these suggestions has been a call to prayer: prayer for victims and survivors, prayer for the purification of the, prayer to continue to strengthen efforts aimed at the safety of children and all vulnerable persons and, finally, prayer to build up in Christ the as an instrument of God's peace. In dialogue with the Liturgical Commission, I am asking that the month of October, traditionally dedicated in a special way to the Blessed Virgin Mary, be a month of prayer throughout the Diocese and in each parish. We will begin with an evening of prayer at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph on Monday, October 1, at 7:00 pm. I am asking that in each parish an evening of prayer and adoration take place on one night every week in October. I invite you to send to the October 1 service at least two members of your parish who will serve as parish representatives. I will commission your representatives that night to return to their parishes as a tangible sign of our unity in prayer. Throughout these trying days and weeks, I hope you are able to find strength in the support we offer one another. I am grateful to all of you for your prayers and your work as you continue to minister to your parishioners, and I renew my pledge to each of you of my daily prayers for you and all that you do. Sr. Irene Loina of Kenya To Speak Sept 22 In 2014, Sr. Irene organized the first coming-of-age training for 134 Pokot girls that did not include the cut, (i.e. Female Genital Mutilation). This historic event was part of her ministry with women and girls in very traditional tribes in Kenya. In that context she took infant-maternal care to the most remote areas of East Pokot to provide pre-natal care, well-baby checks, immunizations, HIV/AIDS information and education of traditional midwives---including information from the Helping Babies Breathe program for premature infants. Since that time, Sr. Irene has earned a master s degree in Program Management from Nairobi University in order to expand her ministry to other remote areas of East Africa. Sr. Irene will share her insights, experiences, challenges and successes on Saturday, September 22 9:00am-Noon in the Hospitality Center at St. Albert the Great.
