2 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time What Does A Youth Ministry Core Member Do? Quite often, I get asked what Core Members in EDGE and Life Teen youth ministry do. And while I can compile a long list of responsibilities, here are three qualities of Core Members that cover the heart of what we do: Core Members know that Christ is their hope. If you are an adult reading this article, chances are that you have been touched by the Lord in some way that keeps you coming back each Sunday to worship. Core Members know that God is the source of their joy and hope and strive to do their best to be an example of an authentic Christian to our youth. Core Members know that ministering to teens begins with listening first teaching, second. Think back to some of your most difficult and awkward moments you ve had during your middle school and high school years. Teens today are struggling with these issues (and much more!) Core Members know that ministering to teens requires a willingness to dive into their mess and build relationship. From there, Core Members can pass on the Deposit of Faith to open hearts. Core Members understand that they are on a Mission of high importance. God s great desire is to fill the void of the hearts of souls who long for Him, yet so many don t know the way. Core Members know that their most important job is to lead teens closer to Christ; for when a teen encounters Christ, it changes everything. Do you feel called to join our Mission? Chris Mardesich, Director of Youth & Young Adults Knights Of Columbus Donation - This Weekend On October 22 & 23, Palo Alto Council 2677 of the Knights of Columbus will conduct its annual fund raising campaign in behalf of the Columbian Foundation for People with Intellectual Disabilities, Inc., a tax exempt charitable corporation of the Order, in all our 3 churches' Masses. Any check donations should be written to the Foundation to be qualified for a tax deduction. This charitable effort benefits Abilities United and Achieve Kids and will qualify them, consequently, to apply for additional grants. Z z Please Pray For the Sick & Homebound Fr. A Catholic response with speaker Fr. Robert McKay Physician-assisted suicide became legal in our state this year. This legislation allows terminally ill adults in California with less than six months to live to get a doctor's prescription for a lethal dose of aid-in-dying drugs. The law is strict, intended to ensure that patients have thought through the decision and are making it voluntarily. Patients must make multiple requests for the medication and have a prognosis of less than six months to live. What are the legal issues around assisted suicide? What is our Catholic response to the law - that is, our Spirituality around suffering, dying and death? What are the alternative options to assisted suicide, namely end-of-life care? What are the evangelizing opportunities within the context of caring for the sick and the dying? A thought provoking topic! Join us at 7:00-8:30 pm, Saint Albert the Great Hospitality Room! Disaster Relief Collection - Today Hurricane Matthew, a powerful category 4 storm, made landfall on Haiti early Tuesday, October 4, The death toll is now more than 900, and the scale of destruction continues to grow. Maximum sustained winds of 140 miles per hour and heavy rains caused massive devastation and flooding. Outside of the immediate need for food, the greatest needs will be shelter, water and hygiene supplies. Along with partners, Catholic Relief Services is now responding in some of the most affected areas in southern Haiti. CRS will distribute blankets, kitchen and hygiene kits, and other emergency supplies as needed. Your brothers and sisters urgently need your help. Your donation will help families receive immediate relief. Special envelopes can be found in the pews which you may return next Sunday if you were not prepared to donate today. 40 Days For Life Campaign The Fall 2016 campaign of 40 Days for Life began on September 28 and will continue until November 6. For the eleventh consecutive year, this wellestablished program will marshal the spiritual forces of prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil against the appalling scandal of abortion-on-demand, which snuffs out an innocent American life every 27 seconds 180,000 lives annually here in California alone. To take part in 40 Days for Life, you only have to pray a little each day. If you can do a bit more, you can add some fasting to your prayers. (As Our Lord told us, some demons can be cast out only through prayer and fasting). And if you're called to do a lot more, you can stand and say those prayers on the sidewalk outside a nearby abortion facility. It's not a demonstration; there are no signs to carry, no slogans to chant. We just pray as close as we can legally get to the spot where Evil is having its way. 40 Days for Life has been approved to work within the diocese's parishes by Bishop McGrath. For more information, and to sign up to take part in the vigil, contact Bob March at (415) or bob.march@gmail.com.
