2 I Have A Question... The 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time I have selected a few excerpts below from a document written by the Bishops of the United States under the title: Norms for the Distribution and Reception of Holy Communion under Both Kinds in the Dioceses of the United States of America. If you would like to read the entire text, here is the relevant link: While the heart of the celebration of the Eucharist is the Eucharistic Prayer, the consummation of the Mass is found in Holy Communion, whereby the people purchased for the Father by his beloved Son eat and drink the Body and Blood of Christ. From the first days of the Church's celebration of the Eucharist, Holy Communion consisted of the reception of both species in fulfillment of the Lord's command to "take and eat... take and drink." The distribution of Holy Communion to the faithful under both kinds was thus the norm for more than a millennium of Catholic liturgical practice. Holy Communion has a fuller form as a sign when it takes place under both kinds. For in this form the sign of the Eucharistic banquet is more clearly evident and clearer expression is given to the divine will by which the new and eternal Covenant is ratified in the Blood of the Lord, Over the past couple of months, you may have noticed, that I chose to be a minister of the chalice of the Lord s Precious Blood during the distribution of Holy Communion at Sunday Mass. I noticed that of all those who came forward to Holy Communion to receive our Lord s Body, nearly two-thirds did not drink of the Precious Blood. The practice of offering the Precious Blood to the faithful has been a practice in our Diocese for decades; and still a vast majority of people choose not to take and drink. My question is: Why not? I would like to hear from you. Please send your comments to me at mstanley@dsj.org Fr. Matt, Pastor z Please Pray ZFor the Sick & Homebound Fr. Anger is a human emotion that often bursts into violence. Our biblical stories sometime depict a God of vengeance. What are we to make of this? How should we approach biblical stories on divine violence? Our answer will include thoughts from contemporary Catholic spiritual writers and biblical exegetes. Please join us for answers to that age old question: Why is the God of the Old Testament so angry? You may be surprised by the answer! Please join us from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at SAG Hospitality Center. St. Vincent de Paul Collection Next Week St. Vincent de Paul serves all who come to us for help. The service we give comes in many forms: rent help, help with utilities, food, clothing, referrals to other agencies. St. Vincent de Paul service is intended to be emergency service. A disabled man who is paralyzed came to us for help with food. He lives in Palo Alto & receives assistance from SSI. This week he was running short. He was given a food voucher. A couple who live in one of the low cost hotels in Palo Alto needed help for one night s rent. They support themselves by panhandling, collecting cans, and other odd jobs. St. Vincent de Paul paid for the one night s rent. These two cases are examples of people who are managing their lives as well as they are able and most of the time they are self-sufficient. Occasionally they run short and St. Thomas Aquinas St. Vincent de Paul is there to assist them on these occasions. Next weekend is the fifth Sunday of the month, when the proceeds from the second collection are dedicated to the work of our St. Vincent de Paul Conference. Please come prepared to contribute your part for those among us who are less fortunate. Funds for the Society can also be sent in an envelope labeled St Vincent de Paul to the Pastoral Center at 3290 Middlefield Road Palo Alto Saturday, January 30 8:30 am...environment (OLR) 6:00 pm...paddt (SESAud) Presider Schedule 4th Sunday Ordinary Jan 31, 2016 St. Albert the Great 1095 Channing Ave. Sat 5:00 pm... In the words of Bishop McGrath: Your gift to the ADA provides for the continuing work of the Church to show the loving face of God through our catechetical, liturgical, educational and social justice ministries. Your generosity toward the Annual Diocesan Appeal will provide essential support to St. Thomas Aquinas and the other 53 parishes and missions of our local Church. The ADA supports diocesan offices including Pastoral Services, Youth & Young Adults, and Liturgy, as well as Vocations, Missions, and Detention Ministry, The Institute for Leadership in Ministry, Seminarians, and Catholic Education. Today is Pledge Sunday, the start of our 8 week campaign. Our parish portion of the Annual Diocesan Appeal is $135, % of the overall diocesan goal of $5,943,885. We are so appreciative that you share with us a heartfelt belief in the work and ministry that is made possible by your 10-month pledge or one-time gift. If you did not receive an ADA envelope in the mail, there are extra envelopes in the pews and vestibule.

Feast of St. Thomas Aquinas - Jan 28 To serve the new town of Palo Alto, St. Thomas Aquinas parish was formed in The Catholics in the Palo Alto area were originally part of the Church of the Nativity parish in Menlo Park. As they grew in number they met to celebrate mass in a white house at Lytton and Ramona while their new church was being built. St. Thomas Aquinas was an apt name for a parish in a university town where the first archbishop of the diocese had been a Dominican St. Thomas is the patron saint of students, he was an excellent teacher and student himself and he was a member of the Dominicans. In 1901 the lots were purchased and in the fall the ladies of the parish held a fair to raise the $1500 to pay for the lots. The bishop then released the funds (budgeted at $12,000) to start building the new church. Building started in December of Day of Reflection on Social Justice PRAISE BE! - A Call to Live Mercy in Our Common Home Deanery 2 Day of Reflection on Social Justice Saturday, February 20, 2016 St. Albert the Great Church, Palo Alto 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Join us for our tenth annual Day of Reflection on Social Justice on Saturday, February 20, Six workshops will be offered focusing on different aspects of the social justice teachings of the church.
