2 Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October is Respect Life Month - The Death Penalty Pope Francis declared today that the death penalty is contrary to the Gospel. He said that however grave the crime that may be committed, the death penalty is inadmissible because it attacks the inviolability and the dignity of the person. He did so in a major talk on Oct. 11 to an audience of cardinals, bishops, priests, nuns, catechists, and ambassadors from many countries on the 25th anniversary of the promulgation of the Catechism, affirming that there has been a development of doctrine in the church and a change in the consciousness of the Christian people on the question of the death penalty. The pope s comments and the timing of them suggest that a revision of the Catechism of the Catholic Church may be forthcoming to reflect this new development in the church s understanding. One has to strongly affirm that condemnation to the death penalty is an inhuman measure that humiliates personal dignity, in whatever form it is carried out. And [it] is, of itself, contrary to the Gospel, because it is freely decided to suppress a human life that is always sacred in the eyes of the Creator, and of which, in the final analysis, God alone is the true judge and guarantor, Pope Francis said [Gerald O Connor, America, October 11, 2017] $1 Million Parish Endowment Match On August 30, 2016, the Catholic Community Foundation announced a $1 Million Match for Parish Endowments. This equals a $20,000 gift to each parish endowment that raises $20,000 in new funds before September 30, With the generous gifts of several parishioners, St. Thomas Aquinas Parish received this matching gift of $20,000 and funded a new endowment which todays stands at $42,882. It is our hope that other parishioners will be inspired to make a lasting gift to our parish as part of their legacy. A gift to an endowment is a gift of hope for future generations. Communal Anointing of the Sick Next Sunday, we will celebrate the communal Anointing of the Sick at several of our weekend Masses. We invite everyone to participate in Mass and pray for all the sick as well as bring friends and family members who can receive the Anointing. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not only reserved for those who are at the point of death, but also for those who are gravely ill due to serious illness, frailty due to age, or for those prior to surgery.
