2 Ninteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Faith Formation - Planting Seeds for the Future Faith is born of an encounter with the living God, who calls us and reveals his love, a love which precedes us and upon which we can lean for security and for building our lives. Lumen Fedei 4 These words of Pope Francis are a reminder of the importance of the gift of faith in guiding our lives on a path of love and fulfillment as the people God created each of us to be. We do so much to help our children develop their gifts and talents so that they will be successful in life, sending them to the best schools and involving them in a variety of after-school activities. Do we invest the same time and energy in their faith? STA-Kids Faith Formation (Pre-Kindergarten through 5th Grade) helps our children to make that encounter with the living God Pope Francis spoke of. We also offer opportunities for our parents to continue their own growth in their faith with our parent gatherings, which all parents are encouraged to participate in. Our program is Lectionary based, so what they hear at Mass relates to what they will do in class, and vice versa; however, being Catholic is not just a Sunday experience, it is something we should carry through every aspect of our lives. STA-Kids Faith Formation is here to help your children grow in their faith. We want to share this exciting time with your children and with you as they begin to know God and to see God as a source of guidance and support for becoming the person God created them to be. The seeds of faith are planted when we choose to have our children baptized. Nourish those seeds with participation in STA-Kids Faith Formation. Registration forms are available in the vestibule of each church and on our parish website. Next week we will have our annual Parish Pancake Breakfast (everyone in the parish is welcome) with an opportunity to meet our catechists, get your questions answered, and to register for our classes, which begin on August 21. Sign up and make your commitment to your children s future as people of faith.... Susan Lee Olsen, Director of Faith Formation Z z Please Pray For the Sick & Homebound Fr. McGrath In these months before November, the electorate of California will prepare to cast ballots on a record number of propositions. Among these is Proposition 62, which would put an end to the death penalty, and Proposition 66, which seeks to expedite the application of the death penalty. I join with the Bishops of California who favor Proposition 62 and oppose Proposition 66, and I appeal to Catholics of the Diocese of San Jose to do the same, to affirm that human life all life is a gift from God. Society has the responsibility to protect the common good; however, the death penalty does not achieve this any more effectively than is possible within the prison system. In addition to this, the number of Death Row prisoners who have eventually been found to be innocent calls into question the viability of capital punishment. Among these is a disproportionate number who are members of minorities and/or the poor. The Catechism of the Catholic Church echoes the teaching of popes, beginning with Saint John XXIII, against the death penalty. Most recently, Pope Francis declared that capital punishment is an offense to the inviolability of life and to the dignity of the human person...it likewise contradicts God s plan for individuals and society, and his merciful justice. I encourage you to affirm life as you vote in favor of Proposition 62, and against Proposition 66 on November 8. Second Collection Next Week - Solidarity Fund Next weekend, our parish will take up a collection for the Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa. While the Church in Africa is growing, many still lack access to basic resources and pastoral care. Many suffer due to high rates of poverty and unemployment, illiteracy, and poor education. The Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa supports pastoral projects that foster lasting peace and reconciliation in a continent often marked by division and tension. Is The RCIA For You? Are you coming from another religious tradition or have you not had any faith formation and want to know more about the Catholic Church? Were you baptized in another Christian tradition and are you interested in becoming Catholic? Were you baptized Catholic but have been distant from the faith and have not received 1st Eucharist or Confirmation? Are you married to a Catholic and attend Mass and want to know how to become one of the Catholic faithful? Facilitated by members of the RCIA Team, this friendly and welcoming group provides the opportunity for inquirers to ask questions about the Catholic faith tradition. For more information about the RCIA Process, contact Susan Olsen, suolsen@dsj.org or Deacon Daniel, dhernandez@dsj.org or call the Pastoral Center at
