2 Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time TRUST IN THE LORD--NOW, MORE THAN EVER. Is it not wonderful to have friends that go out of their way to help us in life whenever we find ourselves in great need or on the wrong path in life? Friends that we know desire only the best for us. Maybe you are very blessed with friends like that? I believe in today's gospel we see just that: a group of persons concerned for a friend and wanting to help him. The deaf man does not seem to be aware of his condition. He does nothing to get close to the one who can cure him. Luckily for him, some friends are concerned for him and take him to Jesus. This is what the Christian community should be like: a group of brothers and sisters who help each other to live around Jesus, helping others and allowing them to be healed by Him. Healing deafness is not easy. Jesus takes the sick man with him, withdraws to one side and concentrates on him. He says to the man the first word that is heard by those who are deaf to Jesus and his Gospel, Ephphatha!" We can also be deaf or closed to the things of God. We can be separated from the life of God. We can hear the Word of God but not put it into practice. We can receive the Eucharist but not be nourished by it. Therefore, one needs to take time with Jesus and ask him to touch the ears of one's heart and to unlock one's tongue so that we can hear his words and so we can speak clearly, speak well of the Lord, and courageously announce the Truth. These are not easy moments for our. Now, more than ever, we need to have that loving and trusting relationship with Jesus. It would be unfortunate to live deaf to his call today, to ignore his words of life, not to listen to his Good News, to live locked in our deafness, in our selfishness and sin... our spiritual deafness. The healing power of Jesus can heal each and everyone of us because, let us remember, we follow Him. MOTHERS PRAYERS AFTER THURSDAY OLR MASSES Mothers' Prayers was formed to help those mothers who desire to pray together for their children and grandchildren, and to find the support they need. PARISH POTLUCK PICNIC Our annual parish potluck picnic will be held Sunday, September 16, from 11:15 until 2:00 at Our Lady of the Rosary on Cowper St. The Knights of Columbus will be barbequing as always, and refreshments will be provided. Entertainment includes dancers for the adults and games, crafts, piñatas and the face painting faerie for the children. The Green Committee will once again sponsor the ever-intriguing FreeCycle event. For the potluck, if your name begins with A P, please bring a salad or side dish; if Q Z, please bring a dessert. More information about the picnic is available on the posters in our churches. STATEMENT FROM BISHOP MCGRATH DATED AUGUST 15, 2018 The news this week of the historic sexual abuse of minors in six Pennsylvania dioceses is truly horrific. Trust was first betrayed by these attacks on the innocent; however, the systematic cover-up and reassigning of these priests by their bishops and superiors is just as unforgivable. As I have stated on many occasions, we the and its ministers must abide by a higher standard. We are called to protect and keep safe children, the young and all vulnerable persons. There can be no short-cuts, nothing that can excuse immoral and sinful acts. The Diocese of San Jose remains committed to protecting God s children and to fostering the safest of environments in which to worship, learn and live. I echo the bishops in Pennsylvania who have asked for forgiveness. Yet we know that forgiveness does not absolve perpetrators of the consequences of these grave transgressions against the defenseless. Finally, I ask you to pray for the victims and their families. I would also request that you pray for the vast majority of priests present and past who have been faithful in their ministry. They, too, grieve for the terrible stain of this sin that has harmed so many. May God bless you all.

ADULT AND YOUTH CONFIRMATION PREP Did you complete your Baptism and 1st Communion but miss the Sacrament of Confirmation? It s time to step forward and complete your initiation into the Catholic. We will begin a series of preparation sessions for Confirmation for adults (ages 17 and up) on Wednesday, October 3 from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Dermody Center. If you are interested in participating or have questions, please contact Susan in the Faith Formation Office or at suolsen@dsj.org. Additionally, all youth grades 8-12 seeking to prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation can now register online on our website.
