2 The Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Four Ways Adults Can Inspire Teen Involvement at Church Whether you re a parent who is raising a teen in the Catholic faith or an adult who cares immensely about the future of the young Church, we can all agree that getting teens to stay active during and after the high school years is quite challenging. Yet in my past ten years of experience in youth ministry, there are a few things adults can do that effectively help us retain our young people. 1. Don t pretend to be perfect. Teens can sense inauthenticity from miles away. The biggest turnoff for any young person is to see an adult who does not walk the walk in their faith. Do your best, and be ready to admit when you ve made mistakes. We re all human. 2. Notice them. Do you find yourself talking ABOUT teenagers more than you are talking directly TO them? If so, try to say hello to a teen at Mass and affirm them for their presence. It is more difficult for teens to feel like they belong in the community if they aren t noticed by the community. 3. Fall in love with God. Do you love God so much that you frequently turn to Him in personal prayer, Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation? Teens can t help but notice adults who are living out the Gospel message with joy. It is contagious. 4. Become a spiritual mentor by getting involved in our Youth ministry programs. Take your involvement to the next level and minister to our teens directly. After all, the Church is built on relationships. There are future Catholic leaders in our community who are waiting for YOU to show them why they matter to the Church. What are you waiting for? Gazzingan St. Thomas Aquinas Parish Spirituality Tuesday - February 14 "Ignatian Spirituality and the Founding of the Jesuits" with Fr. Izzo, S.J. While recuperating from a grave wound, Ignatius of Loyola experienced a religious conversion. Reading the lives of Jesus and the Saints made Ignatius happy and created a desire to do great things. Ignatius realized that these feelings were clues to God s direction for him. This desire led him to a deep spirituality, insights and prayers. He wrote one of the most influential books on spiritual life ever written. How did Saint Ignatius, in his own life, come to develop his unique method of spirituality which we now call Ignatian Spirituality or Jesuit Spirituality? With a small group of friends, Ignatius of Loyola founded the Society of Jesus, or the Jesuits. Ignatius conceived the Jesuits as contemplatives in action. This talk is another wonderful opportunity to expand our own spirituality! Please join us from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at St. Albert the Great Hospitality Center. Many of you may know Father Izzo from the 8:45 am Merton Mass group at Saint Thomas Aquinas. Before joining the Jesuits in 1971 Father Izzo first worked in medical radiation engineering, then in systems marketing for IBM, and as a professional fine art photographer. He has a B.S. in Physics, an M.B.A. in applied math, an M.F.A. in filmmaking and screenwriting, and an M.Div. in Christology and Atheism studies. He also did a post-grad year in quantitative ecology at the University of Washington and a year of spirituality studies at the Jesuit Spirituality Centre in Pymble, Australia. 2nd Collection - Church In Central & Eastern Europe Next week we will take up the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. This collection supports the Church in over 20 countries, many of which are still struggling to recover in the aftermath of Soviet rule. Funds from this collection support pastoral care, catechesis, building renovations, and seminary formation. Your support restores the Church and builds the future in this region. Please prayerfully consider how you can support the collection next week. More information can be found at Palms for Ash Wednesday Ash Wednesday is just a couple of weeks away (March 1). It s time to return your blessed palms from last year, so that we may prepare the ashes for this year. Please bring them with you to Mass over the two weekends and place them in the basket in the vestibule; these palms will be burned at the end of each Mass on the weekend of February Auction Items Needed for Crab Dinner Dance Our Knights of Columbus Council is asking parishioners for donations of enticing, new or gently used items or services or fun events such as a wine tasting or progressive dinner, etc., for the auction tables at their 2017 Crab Dinner Dance coming up on February 25th. So far 41 have made pledges that were equal to their 2016 pledge. Thirty-four have increased their 2016 pledge, while 5 pledges were less than Fifteen people have pledged in 2017 who were unable to pledge in There are 7 weeks remaining in this year's campaign. With everyone's participation, we can meet and surpass our ADA goal; however, this will only be possible if every parish household participates according to their means. Remember, payments can be made over the next 10 months. A pledge of $500 is just $50 a month.
