2 The 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Rejoicing in God s Mercy Together in Christ 2016 Annual Diocesan Appeal Pope Francis, in a homily given last April in anticipation of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, which commenced last month, shared with the world that Mercy is the beating heart of the Gospel How much I desire that the year to come will be steeped in mercy, so that we can go out to every man and woman, bringing the goodness and tenderness of God May the balm of mercy reach everyone, both believers and those far away, as a sign that the kingdom of God is already present in our midst. Rejoicing in God s Mercy - Together in Christ is this year s theme for the 2016 Annual Diocesan Appeal (ADA). Every day our parishes and our Diocese are actively engaging people from all walks of life through a variety of ministries and programs. Each ministry and program offers a special opportunity to our Catholic family to be a sign that the kingdom of God is already present in our midst. Again this year, I am asking you, and every parish family to prayerfully consider making a 10-month pledge or a one-time gift in support of the ADA. Last year only 18% of our registered households participated in the ADA. We are at our best as the Church when each one of us uses his or her gifts and talents to build up one another. When everyone gives, everyone benefits. Your generosity toward the 2016 Annual Diocesan Appeal will provide essential support to St. Thomas Aquinas Parish and the other 53 parishes of our local Church. The ADA supports diocesan offices including Pastoral Services, Youth & Young Adults, and Liturgy, as well as Vocations, Missions, Detention Ministry, the Institute for Leadership in Ministry, Seminarians, and Catholic Education. The 2016 Annual Diocesan Appeal is now underway. Our parish portion of this year s ADA is $135,000. I am so appreciative that you share with me a heartfelt belief in the work and ministry that is made possible by your gift. Pledge Sunday is January 24th & 31st. Please pray over the gift you will be able to make and bring your ADA envelope to Mass. Early pledges will also be gratefully accepted Fr. Matt, Pastor z Please Pray ZFor the Sick & Homebound Fr. The Synod on the modern Family is an historic attempt by the Church to face the evolution of the Modern family from its traditional structure. Dan Baer will bring multiple perspectives to a discussion of the findings and conclusions of the Synod. He will also present his own perspective on what cultural forces have led us to the need for such a synod and where things may go from here. Please join us for a lively, informal, discussion incorporating opinion, analyses, and critiques. Bring an open mind and enjoy the conversation. You may remember Dan from last year s well attended talk: Making Sense of our Catholic Faith in an Increasingly Secular World. Dan Baer grew up in Palo Alto, studied English at Marquette University, and earned a Masters in Theology from Saint Louis University. He has taught professionally for sixteen years. He currently serves as the Department Chairperson of Theology at Sacred Heart Cathedral High School in San Francisco. He lives with his wife Amy and three children in Albany, CA. May our good and generous God guide your gifting. We encourage everyone to consider using the Sunday Offertory Envelopes or Online Giving as a way of giving to the Lord the first fruits of the "treasure" we have received. SAG Power and Light Up and Running! The SAG Solar System passed all 3 inspections (Fire Dept., PA Utilities, and the final building dept inspection) with flying colors on January 5. It is up and running collecting sun rays between rains and producing electricity. The final building department inspector was impressed with the workmanship of the installation and said this is the first solar installation he has worked on that passed the first time through! Meaningful Movies Return January 31 Meaningful Movies will start up again on January 31 with a showing of WALL-E at 5 pm in the Thomas House basement theater at 745 Waverley Street, Palo Alto. On February 14, we will show March of the Penguins, and on February 28 The Constant Gardener. The 3-film series will take a look at the themes presented by Pope Francis in the first 3 chapters of his 2015 encyclical, Laudato Si', on Care for Our Common Home. In Laudato Si', Francis opens the door to using film to understand the crisis as well as to engage our moral imaginations to come up with solutions. The films will form a space for us to talk about care for the Earth. Eucharistic Ministry at Stanford Hospital Stanford Medical Center/Stanford Health Care is looking for bilingual volunteers to assist in their Catholic Eucharistic Ministry in the Spiritual Care Department. Hours are flexible, and training will commence in either late March or early April. Please consider being a volunteer to serve the hospital bound who cannot attend Holy Mass.
