2 Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time Fr. Michael's Reflection on This Week's Gospel The gospel starts with a protest- This is a hard saying, who can listen to it? Why did some of the disciples object that way? Do you remember what Jesus said to his followers in last Sunday s gospel? Didn t he say whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood will have everlasting life? Having heard those words, some of the disciples murmured and dissented and they went away. Surprisingly, Jesus didn t stop them from moving away! Why? Because he meant what he said, and it is up to them to take or leave the words of Jesus. The twelve disciples however, remained with him, led by Peter, who said Lord to whom shall we go? You have the words of everlasting life! Words are very powerful! Let us put aside for awhile the power of God s words and in the meantime look at how words of ordinary individuals have apparently transformed the lives of the people and the world. Mahatma Gandhi's discourse about discrimination through non-violent protest touched and inspired people around the world; the Gettysburg address of Abraham Lincoln fueled and propelled the soldiers with courage and pride; the famous JFK quote, Ask not what your country can do for you ask what you can do for your country. encouraged participation. The words of parents and elders remind their children of basic human virtues and values like love, humility, responsibility, forgiveness, or gratitude. Although children say that sometimes parents are annoying and deafening because they repeat and remind them with the same old words on different days, I tell you that s their way of transforming, and molding them to become better and successful individuals. But if their attitude is like some of the disciples who said, it s a hard saying. Who can listen to it, yes, they grow old but they will never grow mature and successful. Words are very powerful in transforming people and society. Inasmuch as words can build a person, words can also destroy a person. That s how powerful they are! Let us be very careful in dispensing words from our lips! Once we have uttered the words that hurt people or destroy the reputation of others, the damage has been done! And when we have said something that destroys the name of others, I tell you we also have just branded ourselves as gossips. Brothers and sisters, that is why Jesus, the bread of life, is inviting us to be one with him by eating his flesh, the bread we receive in the holy Mass. When we eat the bread of his flesh and drink the cup of his blood, Zwe proclaim the glory of God through zour words that gives life! This week we explore Mary at the Cross and Mary Crowned with Glory. Statement From Bishop McGrath dated August 15, 2018 The news this week of the historic sexual abuse of minors in six Pennsylvania dioceses is truly horrific. Trust was first betrayed by these attacks on the innocent; however, the systematic cover-up and reassigning of these priests by their bishops and superiors is just as unforgivable. As I have stated on many occasions, we the and its ministers must abide by a higher standard. We are called to protect and keep safe children, the young and all vulnerable persons. There can be no short-cuts, nothing that can excuse immoral and sinful acts. The Diocese of San Jose remains committed to protecting God s children and to fostering the safest of environments in which to worship, learn and live. I echo the bishops in Pennsylvania who have asked for forgiveness. Yet we know that forgiveness does not absolve perpetrators of the consequences of these grave transgressions against the defenseless. Finally, I ask you to pray for the victims and their families. I would also request that you pray for the vast majority of priests present and past who have been faithful in their ministry. They, too, grieve for the terrible stain of this sin that has harmed so many. May God bless you all. Parish Potluck Picnic Please save Sunday afternoon, September 16, for our annual Parish Potluck Picnic. There will be the Knights of Columbus cooking up a storm and the usual dancing and games. There will be a Free-Cycle event, too, where you ll be encouraged to bring things you no longer need but are willing to pass on to someone new all free! This year you are encouraged to bring salads, casseroles and desserts; Last name A-P bring salads or side dishes and R-Z bring desserts. And if you re interesting in helping with this year s picnic, please let Chris Lundin (clundin@stanford.edu) know. An initial organizational meeting has already been held. Finally, this will also be a great time to meet and congratulate our new pastor, Fr. Stasys, and newest Parochial Vicar, Fr. Anthony, as well as your fellow parishioners. Hope to see you there!
