2 The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Here I Am, Lord - Admirer or Disciple of Jesus? In this week s Gospel, we hear from John the Baptist who points to Jesus saying, Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world. He acknowledges that Jesus is the one Israel has been waiting for. The very next day, John sees Jesus again and tells two of his own followers to follow Jesus, which they do. One of them is Andrew who has a brother named Simon Peter. Andrew tells his brother about Jesus, and the two drop everything to follow him. Their lives are never the same. For the next three years they will walk with Jesus, talk with Jesus, and lay the groundwork for what will become their mission: to build the Church following Jesus death and resurrection and to give their lives in doing so. Could any of them have imagined what the simple invitation of John to follow Jesus would have led to? John the Baptist s mission, as shared in the Gospel of John, was to point to Jesus and encourage others to recognize and follow. He stood back and watched, admiring this person he identified as the one sent by God and encouraging others to follow. Those followers became true disciples of Jesus, learning his message of love and service and living it in the fullest way possible, even when they didn t understand all he said and did. We are called to be disciples of Jesus, truly following in the footsteps of Peter, Andrew and the others who walked with him. By our Baptism, we have been given this mission: to share the Good News of Jesus by the choices we make and the way we live our lives. But are we truly disciples? Do we follow in the footsteps of those who paved the way for us to hear the message of Jesus and his call to us to be a people of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (the fruits of the Holy Spirit we receive in the sacraments). Or are we a little like John, stepping back to admire Jesus from a distance but consumed by our own mission and all that life demands of us. Now is the time to move from admirer to follower - to become true disciples. As we say in the Psalm today, Here I Am Lord, I come to do your will. Can this be our mantra for the new year? New Parish Photo Album In honor of the 30th anniversary of our parish (1987!), we plan to use the LifeTouch company to produce a new parish photo album. Dates in February 2017 at St. Albert the Great and Our Lady of the Rosary have been reserved in the parish Facilities book. Sign-up instructions will be provided soon. Lifetouch says it typically completes the album in 6 weeks after photography completes, compared to three+ months for a premier directory. We hope to have the photo album available by Easter 2017 (April 16, 2017). St. Albert the Great Church Flooring Fund Update Moving Ahead! Sufficient funds have now been donated to begin the detailed implementation planning. A meeting was held last week to begin that detailed planning. Additional approvals from the Diocese will be secured, as well as from Fr. Matt and several parish groups. Additional details will be provided when they are available. Pastoral Home Ministry Available Jesus has a special compassion for the sick and suffering. He wants us to look out for them. If you are ill or homebound, or in a retirement home or a care facility or if you know a parishioner who needs pastoral care, please contact the Pastoral Home Ministry. We will visit them, bring them Holy Communion and, if needed, offer them the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick by one of our priests.
