2 ST. GERTRUDE PARISH Treasures From Our Tradition What makes the Eucharistic Prayers for Masses with Children different from the others? First, there is the intended assembly, which is described as comprised of mostly children of school age. There are three Eucharistic Prayers for Masses with Children available to us now in the missal. The first one has a very simple form, easily grasped by even a young child. The second has a great deal of participation by the assembly-- repeated sung acclamations. The third has a number of variations that can be tricky for a priest to handle if he hasn't prepared carefully. All of this work does point to a true treasure of our tradition: children are part of the Sunday assembly, precisely because they are baptized members of Christ's body. By contrast, the churches of the Reformation tend to look upon children as members in training, and see worship as an adult activity. Sunday school happens downstairs while the adults celebrate Holy Communion upstairs. In a phrase, that's not Catholic. Children belong to Christ and to the assembly. So, the desire to care for the children in the assembly, to draw them into the prayer, and to adapt our rituals and texts to their needs is deeply Catholic, a true pastoral effort to help draw everyone into the praise of God. Our Lady of Fatima Rosary Rally You are invited to join Bishop Malesic as he consecrates the Diocese of Greensburg to Our Lady of Fatima during the annual Rosary Rally, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 7, at 11 a.m. in the St. Joseph Chapel at the Bishop Connare Center. Second Collection This Week Pope Francis reminds us in his Message for World Mission Sunday 2017 that [t]he Church is missionary by nature; otherwise, she would no longer be the Church of Christ, but one group among many others that soon end up serving their purpose and passing away. The Pope continues to reflect about our Christian identity, and insists that part of our responsibility as Christians is to carry out our mission in a world marked by confusion, disappointment, and frustration. The Holy Father sees the celebration of World Mission Sunday as a good opportunity for enabling the missionary heart of the Christian communities to join in prayer, testimony of life and communion of goods, in responding to the vast and pressing needs of evangelization. The World Mission Sunday collection supports missionaries in more than 1,100 mission dependent dioceses, through whose work and witness to Christ, the poor receive practical help and experience God s love and mercy, His hope and peace. Men s Club Pasta Dinner Raffle Saturday, November 4, doors open at 5:30 in the church hall. Cost is $20.00 a ticket. Only 150 tickets will be sold. Price includes raffle ticket, dinner and Beverages. Catholic Daughters of the Americas The November Meeting of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court #1008 will be held on Thursday, November 2, The Memorial Service in recognition of deceased members will be held at 6:00 p.m. in the church, followed by the meeting in the Church Hall. The Catholic Daughters of America cut off order date for the cookbook is November 10th. Orders will be taken until that date and then the cookbook will be sent off to be published. Cookbooks will be in at the end of November ready for pickup and extra cookbooks are also being or dered. For more information please contact Kathy Policicchio at An Afternoon of Reflection A program for individuals with disabilities and life challenging illnesses, sponsored by the Diocese of Greenburg, Office for Evangelization and Faith Formation, will be held at Our Lady of Grace Church, Greensburg, on Sunday, October 29,1-6:30 p.m. Monsignor Larry Kiniry will be the moderator. Please meet at St. James School Upper Parking Lot at 4:30 PM. We are leaving the park at 11:00 PM, and should return to St. James Parish around midnight. Permission slips needed (if you haven t completed one yet). Please make checks payable to St. James Parish. Also, there will be no refunds. Chaperones and drivers are needed! Save the date: 6 th -12 th graders, we will be helping with the Trunk or Treat at Christ the King on October 29 th from 2:00-4:00 PM.
